You leave the controls for a few days and all hell breaks lose. The Union Bank of California at 840 Carlsbad Village Drive was held up by an 18-year-old who claimed he was carrying explosives.
. . . shortly before 1 p.m. The man entered the bank wearing only a pair of board shorts and claimed he had an explosive device, a gelatin liquid in a canister, police said. . . The man told tellers he wanted all the money from the bank or he was going to “cause damage” to people inside, authorities said.
You’d think you might want to put on a little more of a disguise when you rob a bank. We guess not if you want to get caught. Maybe this bank robbery was just a cry for help.

Maybe we should start golfing. Seems like all the business news in Carlsbad is balls deep. Check this:
Callaway Golf Co., the sports equipment-maker that sued a subsidiary of Deerfield-based Fortune Brands Inc. last year for infringing four of its golf ball patents, filed a second lawsuit against its rival, this time over five of its patents for clubs.
Balls and clubs. . . oh, yeah. One more thing: According to Forbes, Last Thursday Steven C. McCracken, the chief administrative officer, senior executive vice president and secretary of Callaway exercised 40,700 options at $16.56 then sold them for $18.60 for a nice $83,028.

The fans are helping ESPN.com and Sportcenter pick the top 32 athletes in the world and currently Carlsbad’s Shaun White is ranked number 12 between Dale Earnhardt Jr and Danica Patrick.
Shaun White. He doesn’t play a real sport? Well, there is more to life than football, baseball and basketball. The snowboarding/skateboarding whiz kid is a commercial success, an Olympic gold medalist and owner of the coolest nickname in sports, “The Flying Tomato.”
We thought he changed his nickname to “The Animal.” Hmmm.

Carlsbad’s Tony Hawk has pretty much thrown his name on anything that will pay him. But, aside from that, most of them have made sense. Even the helmet mounted video camera could somehow be tied back to skateboarding of a product that Tony would actually eat, drink, or play with. Now, Tony has handed over his name to Dynacraft bikes.
Tony Hawk bikes will be completely different than anything Dynacraft has distributed in the past,” said John Bisges, managing director at Dynacraft. “They will have higher end components, updated frames and the most cutting edge graphics ever.

We know there are flocks of private jets flying in and out of Carlsbad airport every day, but soon there will be more as Spectrum Aeronautical opens their headquarters and operations center in 8,000 square feet of office and hanger space at McClellan-Palomar Airport.
“The new location at Palomar is ideal for us. The airport provides excellent visibility for our aircraft programs, and its convenience is a real plus,” said Austin Blue, president of Spectrum Aeronautical.
The company has two jets under production: the “Independence” (model S-33 eight-place light jet) and the “Freedom” (model S-40 nine-place mid-sized jet), both are scheduled for certification by 2010. That’s perfect for us. That’s about the time we’ll need one.

Callaway Golf Company has announced that it plans to buy back up to $100 million dollars of common stock on the open market.
The Company will assess market conditions and buying opportunities from time to time and will make strategic repurchases as appropriate. The repurchases will be made consistent with the terms of the Company’s credit facility which defines the amount of stock that can be repurchased in any one year.
The board of directors also mentioned a $.07 dividend payable July 5, 2007. Happy 5th of July stockholders.

Chris Lokken, 31, of Carlsbad was a rider in a buggy that had broken down early Sunday morning, according to Sport News. A truck stopped and offered him a ride to the next check point. He jumped in with his helmet on, however, he was reported sitting in the cab behind the front seats with out a seat belt.
The truck was about a mile from the checkpoint when the course went up a steep hill. . . The truck couldn’t make it up. It backed up to make another try but in doing so went over the side, rolling over and over down a 100-yard ravine, Fish said. . . Lokken was thrown from the truck and his helmet came off. He died at the scene of head and internal injuries, Clark said.

According to a press release, Carlsbad’s favorite action sports sons Shaun White and Tony Hawk will join Tim McGraw and 80s party band The B-52s:
at Camp Jeep(R) 2007, the annual “owners only” three-day mix of off-road driving and other family- friendly outdoor activities, to be held July 26-28 at the Oak Ridge Estate in Nelson County, Va., near Charlottesville.
The Camp Jeep event, which is open only to Jeep owners, will cost $295 per vehicle. Guess putting on a show for your owners is what comes along with being sponsored. Sadly, we’ll miss this one.

Unless you were a regular at Squid Joe’s (which is entirely possible, though doubtful) then you probably haven’t noticed the transformation going on at 850 Tamarack Avenue. Squid Joe’s is no longer. Gone is the upside down boat, the fish nets, and the Jimmy Buffet meets Pirates of the Carribean motiff. The business (liquor license included) has been purchased by pro skateboarder and former Flogging Molly accordionist Matt Hensley.
The new place is called Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub & Grill and is set to open soon. The building’s mid-century modern past may get a fifth or sixth chance at life, but this time as an authentic Irish pub. The sign just went up and crews are still hard at work getting the interior set up, but it’s opening tonight in beta. We’ve heard rumors of future live music shows as well as weekend breakfast. Which sounds good to use. In the meantime, we’ll keep you posted.

Don’t know how we missed this one. But apparently, visitors to our own Legoland used 465,000 Lego bricks to build a 94.3 foot tall pirate ship mast last weekend to celebrate the opening of the park’s new Pirate Shores water park feature.
The 94.3ft-high pirate ship mast was made with 465,000 bricks, breaking a previous record of 93.43ft set in Denmark last year. . . A “treasure” made of gold, yellow and clear Lego bricks was placed on top by Legoland pirates.
Don’t you just love kicking Danish ass.
