At around 1:15 AM this morning a Ford Explorer missed that tight left hander on the 78 to I-5 south onramp, plowed through the guard rail, and “splashed into the Buena Vista Lagoon.” You don’t know how many times we’ve seen that rail up a little too close for comfort.
A tow truck fished the SUV out of the water, and the Explorer’s driver was transported to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, the CHP said. . . The cause of the crash was under investigation.

We’ve always wondered what the story was behind that fish hatchery at the south end of Garfield on the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Well, turns out it’s part of the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute. And the president of that company, Donald Kent, is profiled today in the San Diego Union Tribune. He explains what it’s all about.
The hatchery program’s goal was to do something that had never been done before: take white sea bass from the wild and spawn them in the hatchery. Then, with the help of sport fishermen, grow the juveniles in cages situated off the coast from Santa Barbara to San Diego.
It’s good to know that science and the Southern California fishery are benefiting from the profits SeaWorld extracts from its cellblock of performing animal prisoners.

Vista’s San Diego Golf Academy would like to move in to an office building on Camino Vida Roble near Palomar Airport Rd, however, Carlsbad’s zoning does not allow “schools” near the airport because of safety concerns. Academy director Richard Iorio will go before Carlsbad’s City Council to get permission.
. . . the city’s Planning Department is recommending that the council approve the academy’s proposal because the academy’s students are adults and the graduates often take jobs with some of the big golf manufacturing companies. . .
The academy could help pay for The Crossings-at-Carlsbad. According to the North County Times students book “nearly 20,000 rounds of golf a year on local courses and purchase more than 40,000 buckets of balls at practice facilities.”

Topps Co. has given Carlsbad’s Upper Deck the go ahead to begin it’s $425 million bid for the trading card and chewing gum giant after an antitrust waiting period ended.
Topps said it continues to negotiate with Upper Deck, but reiterated that its board still supports the $384.5 million offer from a group led by former Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Michael Eisner and Chicago-based Madison Dearborn Partners LLC.
The Topps directors are still telling shareholders to vote against Upper Deck.

Carlsbad’s Pacific Ridge Corporate Centre on Fleet St recently won The International Office Building of the Year (TOBY) award from the Building Owners and Management Association (BOMA) in the “Low Rise Suburban Office Park category.”

We all know action sports super hero Shaun White is the best all around competitive board rider in the world, however, yesterday at the X Games in Carson, California he sealed the deal by becoming the first person ever to win gold in snowboarding superpipe and follow it up with a gold medal in vert by pulling it out in his final run of the ESPN created made-for-tv event. This is the third consecutive professional vert contest he has won this year (he’s apparently ruling the “Dew Tour” as well).
The judges confirmed the obvious, scoring White’s run a winning 95.75. Carlsbad’s Pierre Luc Gagnon took second (91.25). Enabling North County to monopolize the medals, Encinitas’ Mathias Ringstrom earned third (88.25).
And while he may have moved up-market to Rancho Sante Fe we will still claim him as a Carlsbadistanian, even if he is getting written up in The New York Times.

Maria Sharapova’s “powerful baseline attack” was apparently too much for Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder as the Amazonian goddess plowed right through to win the 2007 Acura Classic at the La Costa Resort and Spa on Sunday 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.
“In the first set I hit some really good shots when she was serving and that opened doors for me,” Sharapova told reporters. . . In the second set I lost that extra step and once you give her a little edge, she’s going to get a lot of balls back and she’s not going to waste her time. I hesitated for too many balls and I knew I had to step in and hit it again.”

When North Coast Photo founder Richard Shute used his Mastercard on a $22 purchase, he didn’t know that it would win him $100,000 in a national sweepstakes promotion by MasterCard called “Run Your Business, Run Your Life,” but he knew exactly what he would do with the money: complete a $250,000 remodel on the North County’s (and Carlsbad’s) “oldest and largest” specialty photo developing lab. We’re not saying there will be some Chet Baker channeling going on in the Pine Avenue Park as the Elliott Caine Quintet takes the Carlsbad TGIF Jazz In The Parks stage on August 10, 2007 from 6 to 8 PM, however, there will be some serious Blue Note stylings filling the air. Elliott Caine has performed and/or recorded with numerous groups and individuals, including Wycliff Jean, Beck, and The Beastie Boys, With the Quintet it’s going to be straight ahead jazz.
The repertoire of the group ranges from original melodies from within the group, to songs penned by the “greats”, such as Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Hank Mobley, et al; from straight-ahead to Latin to funk grooves and soulful ballads.
We’re starting to think that the entire TGIF series should be held in the Pine Avenue Park, you know, to make it easier for us who live in Carlsbadistan.

It may sound like a club, but it’s really The Carlsbad City Library. On Sunday August 5 at 2 PM the library is presenting a free concert by The Nancy McCallion Duo in the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium at 1775 Dove Lane.
Nancy McCallion is best known as the songwriter and vocalist for original Celtic-Norteno-you-name-it folk-rock cult band The Mollys. . . McCallion teamed up with high school music partner Catherine Zavala to form The Mollys in 1989, racking up seven indie releases and countless rave-review shows in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand before the group disbanded in 2003.
