by The Editors on August 17, 2009

Each afternoon at the San Diego Zoo the vines come alive with dance performance called Vine To Vine. Here is a little bit of the oddly erotic performance, but it really is better in person.

Callaway Patent Ruling Reversed

by The Editors on August 17, 2009

Callaway-LogoCarlsbadistan’s Callaway Golf Company thought they were doing pretty well in their patent dispute with Acushnet (the owners of Titleist). A court ruled that Acushnet had infringed on Callaway’s patent. But now all that’s changed, according to a story on Forbes.

On Friday, the U.S. Court of Appeals reversed a ruling involving a patent dispute favoring Callaway and returned the case to the U.S. District Court in Delaware for further proceedings. Callaway, which is based in Carlsbad, Calif., and Acushnet Co. have been immersed in a patent dispute over Titleist Pro V1 golf balls for several years. The court’s earlier ruling held that Acushnet ‘s product infringed on patents held by Callaway.

But the analysts aren’t worried. Stifel Nicolaus & Co. analyst Thomas D. Shaw said, “It simply means an ultimate payment to Callaway is less likely, if at all, and pushed further out.”

Kids Are The Chefs At Captain Cooks

by The Editors on August 12, 2009

CaptcookAccording to their website, Jon and Karen Whitehead started Carlsbadistan’s Captain Cooks Culinary Academy for Kids because they wanted to combine their “passions for cooking, healthy eating and the environment.” Captain Cooks offers three different cooking classes for kids 4-7, 7-13, and 11-16.

IRON CHEF: Each day our young chefs will create 2-3 dishes out of a secret ingredient that will be introduced to them each day. They will learn valuable lessons such as how to work together as a team and how to be creative with what is in the fridge. Our chefs will guide them through the process of looking up recipes in cookbooks and using their imaginations to create tasty dishes. Ages 4-7, 7-13 and 11-16.

AROUND THE WORLD: In this camp we will take a culinary journey around the world and experience different foods each day from Italy, France, Greece, Mexico and China. Kids will learn about cultures and experience new tastes. Ages 4-7, 7-13, 11-16

BASICS OF BAKING: Young chefs will learn the basics of baking, from yeast breads to quick breads, pies and pastries, pizza dough and breadsticks, cookies and cakes. Ages 4-7, 7-13, and 11-16.

There still are a few (like six) spots left in classes this summer. Click the link for more info.

Council Votes To Vote Next Week On Mall

by The Editors on August 12, 2009

The City Council has decided last night to put off voting on a shopping center that may be built at the corner of La Costa Avenue and Rancho Sante Fe Road until next week, according to a story on San Diego 6.

Some say the shopping center would bring in upscale retail shops within walking distance of their homes. . . But opponents say it would bring in more traffic to an already busy area, and the possibility of big box discount stores like Wal-Mart.

There’s nothing funnier than voting to vote later. Then again, the longer it goes without being approved the happier opponents will be.

Barratt American Bites The Dust

by The Editors on August 11, 2009

Uti1407678 T350Carlsbadistan based homebuilder Barratt America filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December 2008, however, that didn’t work out for them. Last week, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune, they dropped down to a full Chapter 7 when creditors say that “reorganization would be futile.”

Richard M. Kipperman, the court-appointed trustee for Barratt, said all that is left of Barratt’s many projects are two single-family homes under construction, one in La Jolla and the other near Lake Hodges. The owners are current on payments to Barratt and will have other contractors complete them.

But not to worry. Barratt President Michael Pattinson says he’s going to start a new company next year “after learning the lessons of building in a boom and bust.”

TGIF Aug 14: Tinsley Ellis

by The Editors on August 11, 2009

Tinsleyellisheader.Jpg

Last summer’s Tinsley Ellis show was cancelled by the San Diego County Department of Heath after officials found a bird that tested positive for the West Nile Virus. This year, we’re hoping nothing stands in the way of what may be the hardest rocking nights of the entire TGIF Jazz In The Park as Ellis drowns Calavera Hills Park in his own brand of southern fried blues, tonight August 14, 2009 from 6-8 PM.

Tinsley Ellis sings and plays with the energy and soul of all the great Southern musicians who have come before him. Ellis attacks his music with rock power and blues feeling, following in the tradition of Deep South musical heroes Duane Allman, Freddie King, Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes. His live shows feature extended fretwork filled with melodic and rhythmic experimentation, in the spirit of jam bands like his friends Widespread Panic and The Allman Brothers. Atlanta Magazine declared Ellis “the most significant blues artist to emerge from Atlanta since Blind Willie McTell.

City Of Carlsbad Has Money Left Over

by The Editors on August 6, 2009

Carlsbadistan doesn’t have a usable skateboard park or a new swimming pool, but Carlsbad City Council is proud to announce that the City has ended the fiscal year “in the black,” according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times.

And it added about $1.5 million to its reserves, according to the city finance department’s year-end financial assessment. The fiscal year ended June 30. . . . Falling sales tax revenue and other recession-related problems have hammered most California cities in recent months. Even well-off places like Carlsbad have experienced first-hand a decline in everything from automobile sales to home construction.

But we’ve got Lisa Irvine at the controls, so we don’t worry.
