Invitrogen Earns AmeriStar Award for GIBCO Cell Culture Bottle Design

Innovative, Ergonomic Packaging Promotes Ease of Use, Storage Efficiency, and Reduced Sample Contamination

CARLSBAD, Calif.–Invitrogen, a division of Life Technologies (NASDAQ:LIFE), today announced that it has received the prestigious AmeriStar® Package Award from the Institute of Packaging Professionals for its new GIBCO® cell culture bottle. Invitrogen launched the redesigned GIBCO bottle in October of last year to offer scientists improved ease of use, storage efficiency, and reduced sample contamination for their cell culture experiments.

The new bottle is the result of three years of collaborative research and development between Invitrogen and global design consultancy IDEO that involved testing more than 30 prototypes, and container manufacturer Graham Packaging Plastics, which helped develop the manufacturing plan for the innovative bottle design. The end result was a redesigned bottle that provides improved ergonomics of the “under-the-hood” workflow, superior handling and storage, easier identification, and additional room for supplements.

“This honor recognizes our corporate commitment to customer-driven innovation,” said Todd Laird, Vice President and General Manager of the Invitrogen Cell Culture Essentials Business Unit. “After extensive observations of scientists conducting cell culture workflow experiments, our team developed a new solution that resulted in a true breakthrough in user-centric design that transforms the way scientists work.”

AmeriStar evaluated more than 100 packages in 15 different categories, with the GIBCO bottle receiving honors for the medical device category. A formal awards ceremony will take place May 19 as part of the IoPP Annual Packaging Summit in Chicago.
