A Bricking Lego Building Contest Today

Modelbuilder001Legoland is hosting 18 men and women today who are vying for the job of model builder at Carlsbadistan’s Legoland California. Ryan Wood (pictured right) of Los Angeles is one of them.

Only 24 people world-wide hold the title of Legoland Model Builder, 10 of them are at Legoland California. Coming from various backgrounds and skills, they all have two things in common: they use every ounce of creativity in their daily work, and they’re passionate about building with LEGO®. . . .After screening more than 150 applicants and auditioning more than 20 contenders using three skills tests on June 24, these 18 finalists will now go head to head at the final build-off at 1:30 p.m. on June 25 to compete for their dream job.

The winners will be announced today at 4:30 PM.

Up to six Model Builders
to be hired after two-day competition

WHAT: Eighteen men and women from nine cities in six states are competing for the elite position of Model Builder at LEGOLAND® California. Only 24 people world-wide hold the title of LEGOLAND Model Builder, 10 of them are at LEGOLAND California. Coming from various backgrounds and skills, they all have two things in common: they use every ounce of creativity in their daily work, and they’re passionate about building with LEGO®.

After screening more than 150 applicants and auditioning more than 20 contenders using three skills tests on June 24, these 18 finalists will now go head to head at the final build-off at 1:30 p.m. on June 25 to compete for their dream job.

Park guests can watch the build-off as finalists have two hours to build a LEGO model based on Land of Adventure, the newest area of the Park. After the competition, while judges tally their results, all finalists are getting the chance to release stress by sliding down Dune Raiders before it opens to the public on June 26! The winners’ models will be installed in Dune Raiders to be seen by Park guests all summer long.

WHEN: Thursday, June 25, 2009
Final build-off: 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
First ride down Dune Raiders: 3:30 p.m.
Winners announced: 4:30 p.m.

DETAILS: Finalists will have just two hours to create an impressive 3D LEGO model. Judged on their creativity, ability to build in three dimensions and use of the various LEGO bricks, the finalists will face off in front of Dune Raiders, LEGOLAND California’s newest adventure slide experience featuring six side-by-side nearly 50-foot-long racing lanes and a pair of double-helix corkscrews that are more than 15 feet high.

The finalists’ backgrounds vary from a glass blower, personal trainer, air traffic controller, engineer, architect, and a sock monkey maker. Twelve are from the San Diego area and the others come from Chicago, Los Angeles, Hemet, Sacramento, Berkeley and Seattle.
