Local surf legends Randy Laine and David Barr (pictured above left) won the Gregorio’s Boy’s and Girls Clubs of Carlsbad fund raising contest for the first half of 2010.

“We had a blast, and the restaurant was packed!” said Barr. “I remember attending the Club as a kid, and my son was a member when he was a kid, and it just feels really good to give back.”

(July 27, 2010 – Carlsbad, CA) Greg Nelson has said he will never be able to repay the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad for all it did for him as a boy attending the then Carlsbad Boys Club on an almost daily basis. But he keeps trying his best. At the start of the year, Greg and his wife, Barbi, announced that they would be donating the profits from their restaurant, Gregorio’s located in Carlsbad, for the entire year of 2010 to the Club. “People can’t always write checks, but we all need to eat,” Greg states simply. “Everyone does restaurant nights for charity; I took that idea and expanded it.”

The goal is to raise $250,000, but of course, the final amount raised will depend completely on how many meals are eaten at Gregorio’s. One creative way the Boys & Girls Club devised to get more customers was to have a weekly “celebrity community server” night, where the host is responsible for inviting all their friends and family to dine and experience the restaurant first hand.

To make matters even more fun, a prize was thrown in … a complimentary dinner for two is given to the “host” who has the highest cash register receipts for each quarter. Winning the first half of the year are local legends of surf David Barr and Randy Laine, joined by Club board member (and recruiter) Chuck Smith. “We had a blast, and the restaurant was packed!” said Barr. “I remember attending the Club as a kid, and my son was a member when he was a kid, and it just feels really good to give back.”

The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad is to provide activities and experiences that enrich the lives of young people, inspiring and enabling them to reach their full potential.

“The Boys & Girls Club provided a place for my brother and me every day after school,” said Greg Nelson. “It’s critical the Club is able to continue offering the growing number of youth in our community a safe place that helps them grow into productive, responsible and caring results. I hope everyone will come to Gregorio’s for a delicious meal, and support this important project at the same time.”
