Carlsbad, CA—April 14, 2011—Local Carlsbad Firefighters joined 38 other departments last Wednesday participating in the annual “Give Burns the Boot” fundraiser, a countywide event in which firefighters with a boot in hand ask local commuters to donate money towards the Burn Institute.

During this one-day event, hundreds of volunteer firefighters camped out at 95 intersections countywide collecting donations in their boots for the Burn Institute. “Thanks to the generous support of Carlsbad residents, our Department was able to raise nearly $4600,” said Ken Sugahara the Carlsbad Firefighters Association President. “The Carlsbad Firefighters are proud to join our brother and sister across San Diego & Imperial Counties to help this worthy cause.”

What began as a grassroots effort backed by the fire service, the Boot Drive has been going strong for more than a decade and is now a hallmark fundraiser for the Burn Institute. Proceeds benefit Burn Institute fire and burn prevention education programs and burn survivor support programs such as Camp Beyond The Scars for burn-injured children, 5-17 years. Celebrating its 25th season, the Burn Institute’s unique camp program has provided a safe place for many hundreds of young burn survivors to share their experiences in a supportive camp environment. All of the money raised through the Boot Drive stays in San Diego County.

The Carlsbad Firefighters Association represents the more than 70 full-time professional firefighters and paramedics who protect the residents and visitors of our hometown. Its members operate the City’s six fire stations and respond to over 8,000 incidents a year.
