On December 26, 2009 the luxury car crew is meeting at The Carlsbad Premium Outlets from 7 AM to 9 AM to show off their toys. If you’re into Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Cobras, Vipers, Lotus and the rest then it may be worth a roll by. . . even if you’re just getting a cup of coffee at Starbucks. It’s fun to see that much cash stacked up in a parking lot.

Kanishka Jain, 23, of Carlsbad was driving north on Interstate-5 near Coalinga, California at 8:30 PM Friday December 18, 2009 when 2007 Toyota Scion he was driving “drifted off the roadway and overturned” killing Tanvi Jain, 22, of New Delhi, India, according to a story in the Fresno Bee. The woman was not wearing a seatbelt.
Jain and another passenger, Tanay Jain, 21, of Carlsbad, sustained moderate injuries, the CHP said. Both were wearing seatbelts. . . The CHP said an officer from another law enforcement agency had stopped Jain about 12 miles south of the accident site and given him a verbal warning for driving at 90 mph.

San Diego Union-Tribune writer Janet Lavelle reminds us that it’s bird watching season in the Carlsbad Lagoons.
It’s at this time of year that bird populations explode in the six lagoons, as migratory fowl wing south along the Pacific Flyway in an inexorable call of breeding and survival. Some stop at the lagoons for a brief respite on their journey, while others stay through spring. . . “The North County lagoons are extremely important for birds on the Pacific Flyway,” said Andy Mauro, past president of the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy and a lifelong birder. “Many species rely on the coastal-wetlands habitat. We have a very large wintering population of shorebirds.”
Guess we better get out those binocs and our iPhones loaded with the Audubon Birds app and start adding to our list.

We don’t follow horse racing at all. But one of our favorite horses of the last season (for rather obvious reasons) was Dennis Wier’s filly Carlsbad.
. . . the Arizona-bred filly won four races, all stakes, from seven starts this season. Undefeated in three starts as a two-year-old with trainer Kevin Lewis, she began 2009 with an eye-popping 13¼-length win in the Arizona Oaks in February at Turf Paradies.
Well, those days are over for poor Carlsbad. She reportedly fractured her ankle while galloping out for a workout on Saturday morning at LA’s Santa Anita Park and was “euthanized.”

With Christmas fast approaching many people waited until Saturday morning to mail out their presents. At the Carlsbadistan post office things were getting a little backed up as the 12:30 PM closing time approached.
With only three US Postal Service workers helping customers and three closed postal windows some people spent close to an hour this morning making sure their packages got out.

The City of Carlsbadistan has awarded $25,000 arts grants to 16 different groups, according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times.
“It used to be the maximum grant amount was $1,000, and they moved it up to $1,200,” Peter Gordon, the city’s cultural arts manager, said Thursday.The recipient are selected by a committee that includes two members of the city’s arts commission and three people with expertise in the arts business. . . Recipients are selected based on several factors. For example, their projects must be Carlsbad-based, Gordon said. . . “Even if there’s an outside artist, (that person) has to partner with a Carlsbad group,” he said.

The holidays arrived early at Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, when members were treated to a special afternoon of holiday activities complete with a visit from Santa and a present for each child.
Throughout the past month, community individuals and businesses were quite busy working as “elves” collecting toys to ensure each member received an age-appropriate gift. Over 200 presents were collected, thanks to the diligence of The Disney Store, Interknowlogy, It’s All About The Kids, La Costa Chiropractic, Law Office of Richard Macgurn, Legoland, Joy Nicole, NRG Cabrillo Power Operations, Oceanside Glasstile, Palomar Investigative Group Inc, PBS&J, Sons of Italy (La Costa Chapter), Torrey Pines Bank, and USAopoly.
“The spirit of giving is truly alive and well in Carlsbad,” said Michelle Felise, the coordinator of the toy drive. “I wish everyone could have seen the smiles on the kids’ faces – they were so excited!”
