Pizza Port Wins 9 Medals At Beer Festival

by The Editors on September 29, 2009

Uti1005392 T350Carlsbadistan’s Pizza Port kicked serious ass last weekend at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado. Pizza Port nabbed nine medals in all, seven of them from the Carlsbad location including Large Brewpub of the Year, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Brewpub ops director Jeff Bagby (pictured right) was pleased.

“I kind of prepared myself for the worst,” said Jeff Bagby, director of brewpub operations for the Pizza Ports in Carlsbad, Solana Beach and San Clemente. “I was prepared to come home with nothing.”

Congrats to Bagby and the Pizza Port team. We know the beer is good, but it’s even nicer to know it’s the best beer in America.

Beware The Brown Widow Spiders

by The Editors on September 28, 2009

Brown WidowEvery morning when we go outside it seems like we’re walking into one big spider web. Seems like bits of web are catching us at every turn. We’re just hoping it’s not the newest poisonous invader whose work we keep running into.

According to a story on KTLA.com the Brown Widow spider in invading SoCal.

Originally from South Africa, the brown widow spiders were first spotted in San Diego in 2004. . . Experts say they have multiplied by the thousands and have been found as far north as Carlsbad and as far south as Imperial Beach. . . The brown widow’s venom is more potent than the venom of its cousin, the black widow, and one bite can send a person to the hospital.

We think we saw one on our fence the other day. Ouch.

October Is Military Month At Mulloys

by The Editors on September 28, 2009

Mulloys LogoEach time we roll in to Mulloys Fine Jewelry at 2978 State Street in the Village of Carlsbadistan, we are surprised. Surprised by the friendly staff, by the depth of high quality merchandise, and by the fact that we don’t do it more often as it is well within walking distance. This month, there is even more of a reason to be surprised as Mulloys celebrates “Honor Our Military” month.

“During these times of uncertainty in the economy, I’ll do whatever it takes to help my fellow Americans serving our country save money and still get the respect, dignity and customer service they deserve,” said the founder of Mulloys Fine Jewelry. “I want to continue to be a part of all of our service members lives and in doing so, I ask if you’ve had a terrific experience at MulloysJewelry.com then please spread the word and take advantage of our Friends and Family referral program specially directed to those Military servicemen and women.”

Obviously, these deals won’t do a whole lot for us, but for those in the Armed Forces it could make a huge difference. Follow the jump for even more special offers. . . [click to continue…]

Hodad’s Coming To Carlsbadistan?

by The Editors on September 27, 2009

Bossman In CarOne of our favorite San Diego burger joints Hodad’s is apparently coming to Carlsbadistan’s Village Faire at the corner of Carlsbad Village Drive and Carlsbad Boulevard, according to leasing information obtained on The Free Library.com.

Hodad’s leased 1,900 square feet of retail space for $217,738 for five years at 300 Carlsbad Village Drive, Suite 202, in Carlsbad.

Suite 202 is the current location of Mr. Peabody’s. No shirt. No shoes. No problem. Damn. Our mouths are already watering. Should we get in line now?

Carlsbadistan’s Charger Fans

by The Editors on September 23, 2009

Carlsbadistan

If you look very closely at this photo from last Sunday’s Chargers game, just above the horns being thrown in the back row, you can see a Carlsbadistan sticker up on the window. Granted, there are much more interesting things to look at, but we wanted to make sure you saw the sticker. . . thanks, Chris.

Hard to believe that the Bolts could lose with this kind of Carlbadistan support.

Legoland Parent To Buy Seaworld?

by The Editors on September 23, 2009

Blackstone GroupAccording to a report on Theme Park Insider it appears that the Blackstone Group (owners of Merlin Entertainment which in turn owns Legoland) may be in the process of purchasing SeaWorld, bringing two of San Diego’s major tourist attractions under one roof.

The complete list of properties of Busch Entertainment Group are Busch Gardens-Tampa Bay, Busch Gardens-Willamsburg, SeaWorld Orlando, SeaWorld San Antonio, SeaWorld San Diego, Discovery Cove, Aquatica, Adventure Island, Water Country USA and Sesame Place. . . Blackstone already owns a 50-percent stake in the Universal theme parks and also has ties to Hilton Hotels Corp. The company is headquartered in New York City.

According to a story on WESH.com no announcement of the sale has been made. KSAT.com, however, is reporting rumors from an inside source at Blackstone:

Blackstone has purchased either 50 percent or 51 percent of SeaWorld, according to the rumor. The Blackstone employee also said two conference rooms have been set aside at SeaWorld Orlando on Wednesday to share the news of new ownership with employees. . . Projections about the sale price are hovering around $1 billion recently. A London paper reported that one of Blackstone’s holdings, “Merlin Entertainment Group,” which holds Madame Tussauds, was about to go public.

Still no official word. We’ll keep you posted.

The U-T Likes NVA’s Things We Want

by The Editors on September 22, 2009

Uti1471370 T350San Diego Union-Tribune writer James Hebert gave Carlsbadistan’s New Village Arts Theatre’s production of Things We Want a good review today.

What really makes “Things We Want” spin, though (under Berger’s deft direction), is the way the brothers end up trading personas and pathologies over the course of the play. They cope with the traumas they’ve been dealt as best they can, and Sherman doesn’t try to pretend they can transcend their past with a snap of the fingers. . . But in this strange (and strangely entertaining play), they do reach some truce in the war within their hearts. . . As Teddy puts it: “I’m not happy. I just have better regrets than most people.”

Things We Want runs through October 11, 2009. Click here for tickets or here for more information.
