Karl Strauss Comes To Knockout Pizza

by The Editors on March 4, 2009

For years Germans have found a certain kinship with the sea side village of Carlsbadistan. So it should be no surprise that Karl Strauss would venture on down to the beach. And this time he’s bringing his beer to Knockout Pizza on PCH.

The Karl Strauss Brewing Company beers that will be available on tap include Red Trolley, Amber Lager, Windansea Hefeweizen, Woodie Gold, Endless Summer Light and Tower 10 IPA. “The partnership with Karl Strauss enriches our dining culture by allowing customers to pair the different flavors of the pizza with the various micro-brewed combinations of the beer,” explained Patrick Farley, owner of FLIPPIN’ PIZZA, New York Style, and Knockout Pizzeria. “Mixing and matching the different blends of high-quality beer with great pizza will make pizza nights a fun and flavorful event.”

This is going to make Carlsbadistan’s best pizza lunch even better.

The City of Carlsbad Chooses Microsoft

by The Editors on March 4, 2009

Several months ago we signed up to receive all the press releases that are sent out by the City of Carlsbad. We have yet to receive anything in the way of news from the City. But hopefully, that will change soon. The City has recently chosen to “use Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite to provide a hosted solution for its collaboration and e-mail applications.”

“As we prepared to migrate e-mail systems it was the perfect time to ask the question of whether someone else could build, manage and support a collaboration environment as well as or better and for a lower cost than internal IT staff” said Gordon Peterson, director of information technology for the city of Carlsbad. The city found Microsoft’s solution to be cost-effective and met its security and best practice requirements with the additional benefit of round-the-clock e-mail support.”

Sounds great. Does this mean we’ll begin getting the news? Or, just a big blue screen of death?

Getting Back Into The Spirito’s

by The Editors on March 4, 2009

Photo-3Fans of Spirito’s Restaurant & Pizzeria (formerly in the Village Faire) can rejoice as the restaurant (and it’s delicious menu) have returned to Carlsbad. In January Mike Spirto opened the restaurant in the Von’s Shopping Plaza at 2560 El Camino Real next to the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.

Currently Spirito’s is running on word of mouth as Mike and his team get the place going, but from what we saw, the locals are glad they’re back. It’s mostly take-out with a few tables inside for dine in, but there is plenty of food, reasonable prices, nice people. A local tradition that’s good to have back.

Oprah.com Suggests Legoland

by The Editors on February 27, 2009

20090220 Orig Legoland 350X263.JpgIn a feature on why it might be a good idea to vacation a little closer to home titled “Wacky Family Attractions,” Oprah.com is suggesting that people visit Legoland.

If you’re a kid at heart, plan a trip to an amusement park inspired by one of America’s all-time favorite toys—the LEGO®! This 128-acre park features 15,000 LEGO models made up of more than 35 million bricks. From a Brontosaurus named Bronte to a tiny rabbit in a magician’s hat, these creations are worth the price of admission.

We agree.

The Riehl World: A Bressi Ranch Fairy Tale

by Richard J. Riehl on February 27, 2009

There didn’t seem to be much more to say about Carlsbad’s Bressi Ranch NIMBYs and their attempt to keep developmentally disabled persons from moving into a group home in their neighborhood. But then I read the letter to the editor last week that suggested that, regardless of their legal rights, the new neighbors would be foolish to move into a community where they were not wanted. Sound familiar? That’s the same argument that was once used to discourage persons of the wrong race, ethnicity or religion from moving in next door.

Last year County Supervisor Bill Horn defended himself against accusations that he’d engaged in a quid pro quo deal with developers. With imaginations like that, he scoffed, his critics should write novels. Since a novel wouldn’t fit in this space, I wrote him a fairy tale instead.

This time it was the unhappy campers of Bressi Ranch that reawakened the bard in me.

Once upon a time, in The Land of Troubled Assets, the NIMBYs were nervous in their village by the sea. Having recently immigrated to the edge of the village, they had found homes where they could live among those who looked alike, acted alike and thought alike.

Latino Water Coalition Endorses Carlsbad Desal

by The Editors on February 26, 2009

410Px-Paul Rodriguez Uso.JpgApparently, Latino’s need water, too, and they want it to come from a desalination plant on Carlsbadistan’s Agua Hedionda Lagoon, according to a press release issued today by Poseidon Resources.

On December 23, fourteen members of the CLWC joined Poseidon for an informational briefing and tour of the desalination pilot plant in Carlsbad. . . . “Water is a critical and defining issue for all Californians. Poseidon Resources’ desalination plant is one of the life support systems that California is going to need in order for us to meet the needs of the future,” said Paul Rodriguez. “Our state is going to need these plants and I’m proud to announce that the California Latino Water Coalition has endorsed the Carlsbad Desalination Project.”

Leave it to a comedian from LA to tell us what’s best for our lagoon. How funny is that?

Honda Unleashes Fury On Carlsbad

by The Editors on February 26, 2009

Quickride-Fury.Jpg

Honda Motorcycles decided to use Carlsbadistan yesterday as the launch spot for the Honda Fury, the company’s first attempt at a “chopper” motorcycle, according to as story on Cyclenews.com.

The bike with the longest wheelbase of any Honda ever made (71.24 inches) uses the 1312cc, 52-degree V-twin powerplant found in the VTX range. Why they chose the 1300 over their bigger 1800cc V-twin is something that’s open for discussion and Honda reps told us yesterday it was really down to the fact that the smaller motor lent itself better to the design of the bike. They also said the 1300 offered a better, chopper-like sound with a better pulse because of its single-pin crankshaft.

And we didn’t even get invited to try one out. . . anyone see one of these on the road lately?
