Callaway Licences St. Andrews Links

by The Editors on February 11, 2008

Standrew

It is the oldest golf course in the world and now Carlsbad’s Callaway Golf has purchased the right to plaster the St. Andrews Links name on all kinds of golf equipment and accessories.

Official St Andrews Links products by Callaway Golf will include golf balls, putters, wedges, golf bags, and luggage, among other items. . . . Purchases of the official merchandise will contribute to the preservation and maintenance of the links, including the Old Course in Scotland, Callaway said.

Why not sell out the place where golf was born?

Yo Ho: Legoland Pirate Campouts Okay’d

by The Editors on February 10, 2008

And now, to catch up on all the important news of Carlsbadistan, we offer up this: The Carlsbad City Council has given Legoland permission to hold “Pirate Campouts” in Legoland were up to 400 guests could potentially spend the night inside the park.

In the past, officials have said the camp would mostly operate in the summer and would be open only to park visitors. That would make it similar to the “Roar ‘n Snore” events at San Diego Wild Animal Park.

Aye, ye land lubbers. Bunk up if ye dare.

From the North County Times:

Autism has not stopped Carlsbad High School senior and honor roll student Ian Mortimer, 17, from accomplishing his dreams, which Saturday included building a 500-foot rail fence.

“It’s a good, challenging project,” Ian said, as he led a team of volunteers from Troop 784, the Kiwanis Club of Carlsbad and the city of Carlsbad, and family and friends helping to install the fence in “Village H,” just off Carlsbad Village Drive.

The fence was created to protect the nearby property and the endangered species of plants and animals that live on it, said Paula Chester, Ian’s mother.

Thanks, Ian.

Carlsbad Police Get Five Percent Raise

by The Editors on February 9, 2008

While city employee unions bicker over healthcare coverage and other issues, the Carlsbad Police department has rolled through with a five percent pay raise to go along with the four percent pay raise they got last year.

The City Council unanimously approved the officers’ new two-year deal Tuesday night. It gives the police officers 5 percent raises this year and next year. Police also receive a boost in the amount the city pays for their health insurance coverage.

Good work. We believe that Carlsbad police officers should be well paid.

Man Robs Bank With Skateboard

by The Editors on February 8, 2008

On Thursday evening, February 7, 2008 a “white man about 25 years old and 180 pounds, with dark hair and a thin goatee” rolled his longboard skateboard into the Bank of America in the 7700 Block of El Camino Real and handed the teller a note and a bag.

The note advised the teller that the suspect had a gun, though no gun was seen, Blackburn said.. . . The teller complied with the suspect’s orders to put money in the bag; the suspect then took off north through the parking lot, the sergeant said.

Looks like bank robbery is still rocking in Carlsbadistan.

Sierra Club Tells Why Desal Is A Bad Idea

by The Editors on February 5, 2008

Mark Massara, the director of the Sierra Club’s coastal programs has written an editorial for the North County Times in which he outlines exactly why Poseidon Resources‘ proposal to construct the largest private desalination project is one of the worst things that could happen to our lagoon.

Poseidon intends to draw more than 300 million gallons a day of ocean water in an attempt to make 50 million gallons a day of fresh water for sale and profit. Limited analysis by Poseidon indicates they’ll destroy 11 billion marine organisms a year. That’s 16 million fish larvae a day!

Poseidon’s own self-serving disingenuous analysis admits they will kill approximately 1 million garibaldi fish per day! The brightly colored, much adored garibaldi is the California state fish, and any killing of garibaldi, even one, is strictly prohibited by California law.

There is more at stake than fish. Follow the link for the rest of Massara’s article.

HedgeWorks Sold To Deutsche Bank

by The Editors on February 3, 2008

HedgeWorks LLC, the Carlsbad-based company that provides administrative services for more than 100 hedge funds was sold to Deutsche Bank AG (Germany’s largest bank) for an undisclosed amount.

The acquisition enables us to further strengthen our service offering to the hedge fund industry, where Deutsche Bank already has strong relationships,” said F. Jim Della Sala, head of structured finance services.

We’re guessing some HedgeWorks investors are smiling right now. Nice exit.

Strawberry Fields Future Plans

by The Editors on February 3, 2008

Since we never figured out what Proposition D was about, or what it means to the land (some of which is currently home to the strawberry fields) we probably should have attended this “public workshop” that was held last Friday to discuss the future of 300 acres along Cannon Road near the Lagoon.

He said a public market and amphitheater could round out the project and create an attractive gathering place, which has been mentioned as a possible use for the land. He displayed large pictures of similar projects, such as Seattle’s Pike Place Fish Market, to illustrate the concept. “This is an area already surrounded by entertainment, commercial and business (uses),” Calkins said, noting that it is near the Carlsbad Premium Outlets, the Flower Fields and Legoland California.

Coke Truck Flips On 5

by The Editors on February 3, 2008

That big Northbound traffic jam Friday night was caused by a Coca-Cola hauling tractor-trailer rig that flipped near Batiquitos Lagoon.

The truck ran off the northbound freeway shoulder north of La Costa Avenue shortly before 5 p.m. and flipped onto its side. . . The California Highway Patrol closed two traffic lanes, forcing motorists to a crawl as far south as San Diego for nearly two hours. By 10 p.m., speeds were still in the single-digits past the wreck.

We’re just glad we ride the Coaster.
