Residents of Florida not have it much better than we do when it comes to buying a season pass at their local Florida Legoland, according to a story in the Tampa Bay Times.
Legoland Florida has dropped the price of annual pass by $30 for Florida residents. The ticket, which has no black-out dates, now sells for $99 from the previous $129, which is what out-of-staters still have to pay. . . The pass, found on the Winter Haven theme park’s website, legoland.com, includes admission to its new water park and free parking. There are also special events at the park for Halloween, Christmas and Fourth of July.
Meanwhile, here in Carlsbadistan a season pass still costs $129 and DOES NOT include parking nor the water park. Thanks, Merlin. Way to stick it to the California locals.
The concert features a quintet playing Peter’s modern bop arrangements with Gilbert Castellanos on trumpet, Tripp Sprague on saxophone and flute, bassist Gunnar Biggs, and Duncan Moore on drums. . . Peter and Gilbert have lived in San Diego for a long time and have only played together a few times. “I love his music!” says Peter, “and I’m thrilled to have a situation to work on some tunes together.”
Tickets are $25 general admission and $20 for Museum members. For more information of to buy tickets online, click the link.
The City of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department wants your kids (ages 5 to 13) to go skateboarding (or just get out of your hair) during Spring Break 2013. And to do that they’re offering the Spring Break Go Skate: Skateboarding Camp.
Go Skate Skateboarding School puts the beginner and intermediate rider on the fast track to being a confident skateboarder. Our mission is to help spread the love of skateboarding across all levels. What a skater will learn: proper foot placement, how to balance, how to use the board for transportation, basic tricks, proper skate park etiquette and terms, as well as safety. Bring your own board, elbow/knee pads, wrist guards, and helmet. All equipment must be worn in order to be in the camp.
The school will run every day for an hour and a half from Monday April 1, through Friday, April 5, 2013 and cost $145 for residents. For all the details, follow the jump. [click to continue…]
At its annual retreat last Tuesday Carlsbad’s City Council decided to forego listening to the usual parade of reports from department heads. They engaged, instead, in a creative visioning exercise, imagining the year was 2025 and Time magazine planned to do a cover story on the city. Council members were to suggest headlines and teasers for the story.
One headline declared the city “An oasis of prosperity, quality of life, and innovation.” Among the teasers were, “How a small city is raising its future workforce in its own world class university” and “Recession proof your city a la Carlsbad.”
One council member drew characters on a white board depicting a father working in a high tech company, his wife shopping, their kids reading books from a world class library, and their dog running unleashed in the city’s open space. [click to continue…]
A beautiful play about finding your way home. All Carrie Watts wants to do before she dies is to see her hometown of Bountiful, Texas. Her son and daughter-in-law don’t think it’s a good idea for an elderly lady to travel, so Mrs. Watts takes off on her own for a journey to reclaim her memories, her youth and her life.

Western Digital will fold Arkeia into its small- and medium-business unit, and expects the addition to boost its portfolio with products designed for the “larger SMB customers,” according to Western Digital’s Executive Vice President Jim Welsh. . . Arkeia provides data backup software, as well as other services such as data de-duplication. Its products are used on more than 150 platforms, including Windows and Linux.
We’re guessing everyone is very happy about the sale. But that would, of course, just be a guess.
On February 8-9, 2013 Pizza Port Carlsbadwill host its 4th Annual Brewbies Festival. Each year the festival brings in specialty pink beer from renowned breweries and holds a raffle/silent auction with items donated from Reef, Black Box, Electra, Bella D’ora, Bakerloo, Honest Tea, and many local restaurants. All the money raised goes directly to the Keep A Breast Foundation. So far Brewbies Beer Fest has raised over $50,000 for the breast cancer awareness organization. Nice to know that it is possible to drink beer for a good cause.
The event runs Friday February 8th from 5 to 10 PM and Saturday, February 9, 2013 from Noon to 5 PM. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door, but as the event has sold out every time it’s been held, it best to purchase tickets online by clicking the link.

For the next four months the Carlsbad City Library will host free business workshops at the libraries Gowland Meeting Room at 1775 Dove Lane. Topics will cover Building Business on Facebook, Link Up on LinkedIn, Steps to Starting a Business, and Doing Business in Carlsbad.
Now that we mention it, we’re realizing it might not be a bad idea for us to attend a couple of these. Most importantly, the Doing Business in Carlsbad session taught by Cith of Carlsbad Economic Development Manager Kathy Dobson, PhD. Couldn’t hurt right? As we’ve mentioned many times before, but we hate it when people park their RVs out on the street for days, weeks, and months on end. We dislike it even more when they park them, live in them, and then repeatedly relieve themselves in nearby foliage. It’s ugly and the stink of urine and feces is both noxious and unsanitary.
Luckily, after years of complaints, the City of Carlsbad is attempting to do something to regulate these miscreant interlopers. They’ve created a draft city ordinance to outline when, where, and for how long RVs can be parked on our streets and they’d like you to read it over and comment on it. Granted, few things in life are more boring than reading city ordinances, but if you care either way on this issue (yes, that includes those who would like to continue planting their hulking, aluminum sided rigs anywhere they like) please read the ordinance and respond.
A draft of the ordinance is available on the city website and at the Transportation Department, 1635 Faraday Ave., Carlsbad, CA 92008. Members of the public interested in providing feedback about the ordinance are asked to put comments in writing and send via email to transportation@carlsbadca.gov or to the address above.
For the official (and more polite) information directly from the city (minus all urine and feces talk) please follow the jump. [click to continue…]
