Last week Carlsbad City Manager Lisa Hildabrand unexpectedly announced her retirement, effective at year’s end. But inside information from reliable sources speaking off the record suggests the occasion won’t be marked by a gold watch and tearful goodbyes. In fact, if you listen closely, you may hear city worker bees humming a tune sung by Munchkins in the Land of Oz.
On Tuesday, October 16 Hildabrand met with city council members for her annual performance review. Following that meeting she began negotiating a separation agreement with City Attorney Ron Ball. It provides severance pay of $192,000, equaling 10 months of her current salary, to be paid in a lump sum no later than January 15, 2013. [click to continue…]

• Hands-on art making activities
• Safe costume checks
• Live music and entertainment
• Food available for purchase
• Farmers’ market with Halloween activities
• Haunted house at the Boys and Girls Club
• Haunted path at Kelsall and Associates

The Carlsbad Education Foundation’s 12th Annual Carlsbad Golf Classic got off to loud start today at noon with the helicopter ball drop at The Crossings at Carlsbad.
Dennis Fritz from Carlsbad won $5,000 when the ball with his number on it dropped into the 9th hole. Buffy Richford, a representative from V Partner, the charitable arm of ViaSat, was in the helicopter, dropping golf balls onto the green below. . . The “Chopper Dropper” was just part of the Carlsbad Golf Classic which lasts all day with a golf tournament followed by wine tasting, dinner and silent and live auctions.

The 150 abled and challenged riders who left San Francisco, California on Saturday, October 13, 2012 for the 2012 Dodge Million Dollar Challenge rolled through Carlsbadistan this morning (October 19, 2012), before ending their journey in La Jolla, California having ridden 620 miles down the California Coast in only six days.
The riders, who had full support, ate great meals, and stayed in five-star hotels along the way, helped raise more than $1 million for the Challenged Athlete’s Foundation.
Former participant and professional cyclist Christian Vande Velde says that ride was an inspiration:
“It was one of the most rewarding weeks of cycling I have ever experienced,” he said. “It was amazing to ride for a cause that helps change the lives of so many athletes, and gives them the chance to enjoy what we do every day. In the end, I think I left the most inspired of all.”
Several Carlsbadistan based businesses helped sponsor the ride including Life Technologies, SKLZ, and Spy Optic. For more information on how you can ride the coast next year or help someone who is riding, click the link.

Doug Manchester, the owner of the U-T San Diego (and the North County Times) is now officially going after the Tribune Company, according to a story on KPBS.com. The Tribune Company owns The Chicago Tribune, The Baltimore Sun, The Hartford Courant and more importantly, the LA Times.
“We certainly are going to look at it,” Manchester said. “We are looking at it, yes. I would like to, yes.” . . Tribune spokesman Gary Weitman refused to comment on what he called speculation regarding the company and its assets. The Tribune’s owners are two hedge funds and JP Morgan Chase. U-T CEO John Lynch said recently that the paper’s ownership was interested in acquiring a company that would give it a national footprint. . . “We believe our business model will work and create great economic benefit to all of the investors,” Lynch said.
Media companies are cheap right now. For businessmen with another stream of revenue and the desire to give themselves good press, owning newspapers apparently makes sense.

On Saturday, October 27, 2012, Scott Paulson and the Teeny-Tiny Pit Orchestra will add some aural flavor to a late-night, double feature picture show at the New Village Arts Theatre with the 1920s version of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde starring John Barrymore and F.W. Murnau’s 1922 classic Nasferatu.
The audience will assist with some of the sound effects and musical gestures to accompany the films–Scott Paulson, of the Teeny-Tiny Pit Orchestra for Silent Films, will provide some quick training: Play on a real Theremin, if you dare! Strike the thunder-sheet! Crank up the wind machine! Play an orchestral harp in the pit orchestra! Rattle some ritual percussion instruments!
Tickets $16 ($10 for just one film) and $8 for kids under 18. The first film begins at 7 PM with Nasferatu screening at 11 PM. The New Village Arts Theatre is located at 2787 State Street in Carlsbad, California. For more information, click the link.

On Friday, October 18, 2012 golfers will take to The Crossings at Carlsbad to whack their balls in the 12th Annual Carlsbad Education Foundation Golf Classic.
The action begins at noon with a shotgun start to a day that will include live and silent auctions, dinner and a program to follow. The Carlsbad Education Foundation hopes to double the funds raised this year and is aiming for $1 million dollars–all of going to support science, music, and innovation in all Carlsbad Schools. Yesterday afternoon I went to the North County Times online to ask for a vacation hold for a couple of days while we’re out of town. The website no longer recognized me as a subscriber, so I had to resubmit my street and email addresses.
This morning I got an email in reply, thanking me for “subscribing to U-T San Diego’s digital only edition. We know you have several options in how you receive your news and are glad you chose us.” It was signed “Papa Doug Manchester.”
That reply and the death of the only other choice of a daily newspaper in North County sealed my decision to extend that vacation hold request to forever.
The first three days of the North County Times under Manchester’s ownership reveals its new brand: just an added section to U-T San Diego, gratuitously carrying the familiar blue NCT masthead (adding “U-T” to it) dishonestly designed to reassure North Countians they haven’t lost their daily newspaper. The US Bank on Carlsbad Village Drive near Jefferson was robbed yesterday (October 16, 2012) by a man on a skateboard, according to a story in the North County Times.
The robber told the bank teller he had a gun, although no one saw the weapon during the robbery, which happened about 2:30 p.m. at the U.S. Bank on Carlsbad Village Drive near Jefferson Street, Sgt. Greg White said. . . The robber was gone when police arrived.
As numerous commenter have pointed out: is it really that easy to rob a bank? Guess so.

This Friday night, October 19, 2012, the New Village Arts Theatre kicks off their new quarterly event Friday’s @ The Foundry beginning at 7 PM. It’s apparently an art party.
The evening will include local art by the Foundry artists, live music by roots and blues-man Nathan James, an interactive art project, complimentary appetizers, and a cash bar.
If you’re in the Village this Friday night, stop by. It’s a good crowd. The party runs from 7 – 10 PM. New Village Arts Theatre is located at 2787 State St, Carlsbad, California.
