Carlsbad’s Tony Hawk Goes On Tour

by The Editors on July 9, 2008

HawkWe are continually amazed that Carlsbadistan’s action sports icon Tony Hawk can get out there and do a 24-city, 18-state Boom Boom Huckjam Tour in 38 days. But starting July 18 in San Antonio, Texas he’s going to do it again. By the time he gets to San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium on August 23, he will have already done 22 shows.

Huck Jam — which includes skateboarding, BMX bike jumping, freestyle motocross stunts and lots of loud rock and rap music — is now an independent show that uses outdoor venues. . . . “It was a huge thing, hauling all that equipment to arenas,” Hawk says. “The outdoor shows are more manageable.”

The man is obviously indefatigable. Be sure to watch the video at USA Today. And if you want to see the Huckjam at Qualcomm Stadium on August 23, 2008, click here for tickets.

Go Skateboarding Day!

by The Editors on June 21, 2008

Iascb200X50If you’d forgotten. Today is officially world-wide Go Skateboarding Day.

If you see someone on a skateboard (even if they’re rolling where they shouldn’t) congratulate them for celebrating a world wide holiday. And if you own a skateboard (no matter how old it is) get out and ride it. Or, you could even stop by the Carlsbad Skatepark at the Orion Avenue Safety Center and share the love.

City Council Says Who Cares To Skateboarders

by The Editors on April 24, 2008

Thanks to a planned public works center and police and fire training facility (that will be built on the land currently occupied by the Carlsbad Skateboard park) there is some worry that skateboarders will have no park at all until the new park at the Alga Norte is completed, according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times. But don’t expect the Carlsbad City Council to care.

The City Council unanimously decided Tuesday that it does not want to find an alternate location for the Orion Way skatepark, since Alga Norte is opening soon. The council will revisit whether the city needs two skateparks —- as some skateboarding enthusiasts have suggested —- after Alga Norte opens.

When a location in the Calavera Hills Park site was suggested for a possible interim or second skateboard park Council member Ann Kulchin threw this idiotic line into the discussion: “There’s a lot of residences there,” she said. “I’m not sure they would welcome a skatepark.”

Carlsbad was the home of the world’s first concrete skatepark, it is the birthplace of modern skateboarding (and the industry that surrounds it) and yet this is the kind of response we get from our City Council. It’s pathetic. Truly.

Carlsbadistanian Wins Ultimate Boarder 2008

by The Editors on April 20, 2008

AstorgaWhile we may not be so sure about “The Triathlon of a New Generation” a.k.a. the Ultimate Boarder 2008, (contest in which athletes compete in snowboarding, surfing, and skateboarding with combined scoring), we are absolutely sure that the right guy won.

Carlsbadistan’s Aaron Astorga (you may have seen him driving around town in the Hurley sprinter van) edged out pro snowboarder and ESPN commentator Todd Richards and rolled away with a check for $30,000.

It was an amazing event and everyone had a great time” said Ultimate Boarder champion, Aaron Astorga. “The contest organizers did an unbelievable job of bringing all of the surfers, skaters and snowboarders together and I know a lot of us are already looking forward to next year’s contest.”

Aaron, thanks for showing the world that Carlsbadistan remains action sports central. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.

Follow the jump for all the details.

Logan Earth Ski Matriarch Dies

by The Editors on November 20, 2007

Barbara Logan, the mother of Logan Earth Ski founders Brian and Bruce Logan died of breast cancer Saturday November 17, 2007 in Oceanside. She was 79 years old according to a story in the North County Times.

Anyone who grew up dreaming of traveling to Carlsbad to ride the world’s first concrete skateboard park knows all about the Logan Earth Ski brand and that is thanks in a large part to Barbara.

Logan steered her three sons and daughter toward skateboarding and served as the bookkeeper and administrator of the family business. . . . The Logan Earth Ski brand of solid oak skateboards was a top-seller in the 1970s, when the advent of urethane wheels catapulted skateboarding’s popularity as a competitive sport . . . Logan’s survivors include three sons, Brian, of Vista; Bruce, of Carlsbad; and Brad, of Oceanside; a daughter, Robin Logan, of Palm Desert and four grandchildren. The family is planning private memorial services Dec. 1 in Oceanside.”

Our thoughts are with the entire Logan family.

Skater Girl Falls, Gets Helicopter Ride

by The Editors on October 4, 2007

A 16-year-old girl (who was not wearing a helmet) fell from her skateboard at about 3 PM October 3 “near the intersection of Buena Vista Way and Highland Drive,” according to the North County Times.

The girl hit her head and according to a witness, suffered a seizure, Capt. Skip Clark said. . . She didn’t remember (what happened), she was kind of confused,” and suffered injuries, he said. The girl was taken by medical helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla for treatment, Clark said.

Be careful out there. . . concrete and asphalt are really hard.
