by The Editors on June 16, 2008

Carlsbad High surfer Gabe Garcia lead his team to a victory at San Onofre over San Clemente to win the Red Bull Riders Cup National Championship on Sunday, according to a story in the Orange County Register. He also grabbed the title of MVP for the high school surfing event.

But Carlsbad’s Gabe Garcia came through with key rides in the first and second periods and a critical 7.5 in the third on a clean solid right-hander to lift his team to victory. “We put everything we had into it,” Garcia said. “It was a hard game. It was close. And that’s what made it interesting.”

Congrats Gabe, and the rest of the Carlsbad High School surf team for showing the OC what’s up.

CHS Ticket Booth Goes Up In Flames

by The Editors on June 13, 2008

Sounds a little more like a prank than a serious arsonist’s attempt at fire bugging, but someone set a Carlsbad High School stadium ticket booth on fire early on the morning of June 12, 2008.

Carlsbad firefighters responded to the school about 12:15 a.m. and found the wooden structure near the back entrance of the stadium burning, Battalion Chief Mike Kennedy said. No other structures were threatened, and firefighters extinguished the flames in minutes. Damage was estimated at $600 to $800, he said.

Sometimes seniors find it hard to leave their schools without leaving a mark.

Arballo Takes Men’s And Boy’s Titles

by The Editors on May 21, 2008

Sp-Surf280Earlier this month Carlsbad High School sophomore Christian Abrallo, 16, took the Western Coast Championships in Men’s and Boy’s Shortboard at the Western Surfing Association Championships at Church’s, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

But Arballo’s victories are remarkable for the fact that the local surfer is excelling despite major heart defects that threatened his life and have prompted two surgeries to repair valves. . . . To hear him tell it, though, it’s no big deal. . . . “I don’t think about it at all,” Arballo said. “It doesn’t stop me from surfing or doing anything I want to do.”

Congrats, Chris.

Carlsbad High’s Dachau Fieldtrip

by The Editors on April 19, 2008

Students in Doug Green’s broadcast journalism class at Carlsbad High made a Holocaust pilgrimage to Germany’s Dachau prison camp to make a documentary film.

Taking turns with three high-definition video cameras, the students captured about 25 hours of footage, including their own thoughts about the Holocaust. . . .Students will weave footage from Dachau with their interviews to produce a 45-minute documentary called “Never Again,” to be released on DVD this fall.

We’re sure this film will be interesting, however, we can say that Holocaust documentaries aren’t something we look forward to seeing.

Weil On Governor’s All-State Academic Team

by The Editors on March 12, 2008

Carlsbad High School’s Kaylee Weil (GPA: 4.5, SAT: 2290, Class Rank: 1) has been named to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first California All-State Academic Team at the “first Annual Governor’s Academic Recognition and All-State Academic Team Awards Dinner in Sacramento.” Out of 144 students being honored by the Governor only 25 were chosen for this special honor.

“I think it is extremely important that we take the time to honor the hard work, dedication and commitment to excellence all of these students have demonstrated,” said Governor Schwarzenegger. “These young men and women should be proud of what they have accomplished. We have students who never missed a day of class, made perfect scores on the SAT and still find time to volunteer for a dozen different extra-curricular activities. They mentor, tutor and excel in sports. They dream of making the world a better place and they already are.”

Congratulations Kaylee, you’re making Carlsbadistan proud.

Carlsbad Graduates Try To Re-Live Their Youth

by The Editors on February 16, 2008

Maybe it’s because high school was not exactly the high point of our lives that we find all this Carlsbad High School historical stuff so weird. Seriously, aren’t you supposed to move out after you graduate? That’s why we laughed when we saw that:

Graduates of all years from Carlsbad High School are invited to participate Saturday in a parade of period cars commemorating the migration of students 50 years ago from then Oceanside-Carlsbad High School to their first day of classes at the brand new $1.1 million Carlsbad High.

So how was the parade? If you went, please let us know in the comments. And then, maybe explain why you’re still hanging around your high school like David Wooderson in Dazed and Confused.

La Costa Canyon Beat Out By Lincoln

by The Editors on February 14, 2008

14Fhurley1In the Hurley Walk The Walk high school fashion competition, La Costa Canyon rocked it out to the sounds of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” but it wasn’t enough to hold off Lincoln High School.

La Costa Canyon High’s team amplified the energy even more by playing Michael Jackson’s Eighties hit “Thriller” and emerging through a runway entrance decorated with the phrase: “Coming Alive. . . But Lincoln High had the crowd buzzing loudest.”

Nice work, LCC. You made Carlsbadistan’s fashionistas proud.
