As Marty said while posted up on Coast Highway just north of Cafe Elysa: “Sometimes you just have to take things into your own hands.”

This trailer is from the film Drips by group of Carlsbadistanians who call themselves Soonami Productions. Their newly launched website describes them like this:
We are a group of people passionate about film, theatre, music, photography, video production and fine art. As artists, we are interested in working with local San Diego artists and others across the U.S. to pursue artistic projects of these types. Through the Web and other technologies we hope to take advantage of redefining what community is by working with those who share our passions and values whether near or far away.
Local creativity at its finest. No doubt.

The US Postal Service is in the process of releasing a new set of stamps memorializing “some of the most impressive scientific achievements of the 20th century,” according to a story in the Imperial Valley News. The scientists features on the stamps include: Theoretical physicist John Bardeen, biochemist Gerty Cori, astronomer Edwin Hubble, and structural chemist Linus Pauling. But the most interesting part to us was the involvement of Carlsbad resident and US Postal Service Art Director Carl Herrman.
For each stamp, artist Victor Stabin of Jim Thorpe, PA, with the assistance of art director Carl Herrman of Carlsbad, CA, created a collage featuring a painted portrait of each scientist combined with diagrams or photographic representations associated with their major contributions.
Mr. Herrman, is famous in the world of design for having been involved with the art direction of literally hundreds of commemorative stamps in his 16 years as an Art Director for the U.S. Postal Service. We’d show you an image of the stamps, however, they are being unveiled today in a ceremony at Madison Square Gardens.

When everything is destroyed in the inevitably coming Armageddon we are relieved to know that the new City of Carlsbad recycling silo on the seawall above the beach at Offshore will still be standing.
Looking more like a bomb detonating chamber, this solid concrete recycling bin/dog urinal is serious about collecting aluminum, glass, and plastic ONLY. Put anything else in there and rocket launchers will magically appear in the turret and blow you into the next dimension.
Okay, that last part was a joke.

Artists don’t get out much. At least that’s what we like to tell ourselves as an excuse for not having seen Carlsbad artist Jen Trute’s paintings before now. Apparently, she’s been painting in Carlsbadistan for several years. San Diego Union-Tribune Art Critic Robert L Pincus profiled Ms. Trute today. Here’s a little of what he said:
She points to a breakthrough surreal painting, “Sarah and Her Demons,” a canvas done in the meticulous style she is still honing. A woman poses in a kitchen chair, looking unperturbed. Sarah doesn’t notice the demon by her side. A twin demon is standing on the kitchen table, devouring the cereal from the box. . . In an oblique way, you sense this painting is about Trute too, trying to stave off dramatic forces within.
While Trute’s style isn’t necessarily what we’re into, her work is definitely worth checking out.

North County Times photographer John Koster’s image of Lynn Forbes working in her new sculpture school in the Village Faire. Forbes is also the person behind those “sculpture” tents that take up half the lawn at the park in front of Offshore. Does Carlsbadistan really need businesses taking over our public parks on the weekends? Maybe we’re just missing the point. For the rest of the story click the link.

If you’ve been cruising the Village lately and noticed that many of the shop windows have been painted up with colorful holiday scenes, you can thank Vista artist Alli Thoeni and The Carlsbad Village Business Association. According to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times, Thoeni has already dressed up the front windows of 15 businesses.
It’s first stage of what the downtown merchant’s group is billing as its first full-scale, month-long holiday celebration. . . “We’re very excited,” said Robin Young, the association’s executive director. She said that she hoped some elements of the holiday schedule —- especially the extended shopping hours on Wednesdays —- become permanent.

[Click HERE for all the photos] Today around noon the “big winter storm” that had been forecasted began loading up some clouds off shore with close to six water spouts. The clouds moved on shore just in time for Carlsbad’s Art Splash on Armada Drive behind the Flower Fields. Though it rained for about 20 minutes, it was not enough to slow any of the dedicated chalk artists .
We lost a little in the rain, but it wasn’t bad, ” said Eugenia Bizzaro as she and her husband Blane worked under the bright sunlight.
She and Blane (Bizzaro Creations) are artists who take this transitory art form very seriously.
“This is a true art form pasted on from generation to generation,” Virginia said. “It’s great for the kids to watch and learn because the way school art programs keep getting cut back these days kids rarely get to see artists at work. That’s why we are here. We want to encourage kids to be more interested in art.”
Several thousand people enjoyed the first day of the two day event. While there wasn’t that much chalk art to see today, there were booths showing art of all mediums and style. For the completed chalk art be sure to check it out tomorrow.
