Carlsbad’s own New Village Arts Theatre presents the A.R. Gurney’s romantic comedy Sylvia. Here’s what it’s got going on:
When Greg adopts a dog named Sylvia, or rather is adopted by the street-smart mutt, Sylvia (played, alas, by a human) soon turns into a bone of contention for his wife Kate. . . In this romantic comedy by A.R. Gurney, the author of Love Letters, the long-married empty nesters have to dig their way out of an unexpected hole: Kate feels that she’s losing Greg to his adoring new best friend. This imaginative take on a midlife crisis leads to lots of laughs and thoughtful insights on love, marriage, jealousy and canines.

Join Peter Gach for a three part lecture series – “Musical Insights.” Drawing on his lifetime of involvement in music and his 30+ years of teaching experience, Gach will explore the hidden aspects of the musical experience. The lectures are designed for all levels of listeners, and will look at music in new and unique ways. Each lecture will be illustrated by performances drawing from Gach’s vast repertoire.

Part 2: Back to the Beat (Thursday, May 21 @ 7:00 PM)
Part 3: Sound and Sculpture (Thursday, June 18 @ 7:00 PM)
For those who don’t know Peter Gach is a pianist of wide-ranging musical interests. His repertoire extends from the complete Well-Tempered Clavier, Vol. II of JS Bach, to contemporary works written especially for him. He is also the Professor Emeritus and former Chairperson of the Performing Arts Department at Palomar College.

Elementary and middle school kids (ages 5 – 14) who love to dance, or aspire to try out for dance or cheer squads in the future, are invited to brush up on their dance skills this summer with the Carlsbad High School Varsity Dance Team. The Champion Lancer Dancers will be holding a Junior Lancer Dancer summer camp from Aug. 4 through 7 at Carlsbad High School from 9 a.m. to noon each day.
The summer camp is open to beginners, intermediate and advanced dancers for a donation of $125 per child (includes a free T-shirt and photo). Participating dancers will learn new dance routines, have a performance opportunity, gain self-confidence and begin to develop a championship attitude by having the Lancer Dancers as role models.

Nobel Prize-winning author William Golding’s provocative, dystopian novel shocked and challenged audiences in 1954, and it’s lost little of its edginess in the decades since. LORD OF THE FLIES finds a group of school boys — the only survivors of a plane crash on a remote island — splitting into two factions in a fight for control of their new environment that rapidly descends into madness. Adapted for the Stage by Nigel Williams and Directed by Justin Lang.

Señor Grubby’s Justin Jachura and art collaborator Bryan Synder.
A collaboration between Señor Grubby’s and Carlsbad Village street artist Bryan Snyder will see the work of selected LA street artists featured on Grubby’s East wall over the coming months. According to Snyder the goal of the Carlsbad Art Wall is to:
. . . serve as a conduit between aspiring artists and professional artists, to provide a platform to engage and educate the Carlsbad community in the creative act of large scale public painting and to introduce a variety of new art and creative processes to the Carlsbad community. . . The project begins with Los Angles street artist Bumblebeelovesyou. Through artwork including large scale stencil portraits of children and beehive installations in abandoned phone booths, Bumblebeelovesyou brings attention to children homelessness and the impact of modernity on nature. His artwork is is whimsical, playful and exudes a sense of childish innocence, freedom and joy.
Each month a new artist will take over the wall to share their own view of the world around them. The Carlsbad Art Wall kicks off on Friday March 6, 2015 at Señor Grubby’s. Señor Grubby’s is located at 377 Carlsbad Village Dr, in Carlsbad, California.

Previews for the New Village Arts Theatre production of Stage Kiss begin this weekend (January 30, 2015) with pay-what-you-can ticket pricing.
PWYC tickets are subject to availability, and are first-come first-served starting an hour before the performance. There is no guarantee that all patrons seeking tickets via the PWYC option will receive a ticket. . . Reserved seats are available for preview performances at $24 a seat. You’ll never look at a classical guitar, standup base or tap dancer the same after experiencing Besos de Coco’s eclectic mix of jazz, Brazilian, and classical music. They will be playing a winter concert at the Carlsbad Library’s Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 6 PM.
This fun and flavorful trio features classical guitarist Lorraine Castellanos, double bassist Evona Wascinski and tap dancer Claudia Gomez Vorce, whose magical footwork conjures the sound of percussion instruments.

Last night (December 29, 2014) the official welcome gate to the Village of Carlsbad went back up in front of the Twin Inns, Neiman’s, Ocean House, whatever is in there now at the corner of Elm St. Carlsbad Village Drive and Carlsbad Blvd. We are so glad there are no dolphins on the sign. This is not The Nutcracker you’re thinking of. Well, it’s the same story, but as the hashtag points out this is #nottheballet. This version of the famous Christmas story, directed by Kristianne Kurner, runs at Carlsbad’s New Village Arts Theatre from November 29 to December 31, 2014.
A fresh take on this holiday classic centers on young Clara’s journey to save Christmas with the help of a magical nutcracker. This modern production weaves together magic, original song and spellbinding spectacle – fit for the whole family! West Coast Premiere. . . Artist Santos Orellana is creating what may well be the largest solo art show in San Diego history with a 20,000 square foot space. The show, produced in collaboration with True Honor includes a 175 by 22.5 foot mural and a collection of eight years of the artist’s best work. The show titled Lost and Found, opens October 25, 2014. No, you won’t want to miss it.
