If you’ve meant to visit New Village Arts Theatre to catch the critically acclaimed play The Man Who, then this week is your last chance. The Man Who closes on Sunday February 28, 2010.
The Man Who is inspired by, but is in no way a conventional stage adaptation of, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Oliver Sacks‘ best-selling collection of case histories about the neurologically impaired. Performed by a superb ensemble of four actors and one musician, this series of fables is an adventurous journey through the mind, as well as a demonstration of a very rare kind of dedicated theater craft.
New Village Arts production of the play has been extremely well reviewed in The North County Times, SanDiego.com, and SD City Beat. The play run Thursday and Friday night at 8 PM, Saturday at 3 and 8 PM and Sunday at 2 PM. Click here to purchase tickets online.

We knew the acting talent at New Village Arts Theatre ran deep, but we didn’t know how deep. Thanks to a Lillian Cox story in The Coast News, we now know a lot more about the Kurner family.
Kristianne Kurner is executive artistic director of the award-winning New Village Arts Theatre. She founded the theater in 2001 with former husband Francis Gercke who is currently associate artistic director of the Cygnet Theatre in San Diego. Kristianne also teaches the “Study of Filmed Plays” and runs the Actors Academy at MiraCosta College. . . Kristianne’s mother, Laura Kurner, also an actor, manages the new Art Foundry. It is a complex of artist studios with public access in the New Village Arts Theater building, which is owned by the city of Carlsbad. . . Kristianne’s son Jonah Gercke, 11, has already made a name for himself, garnering rave reviews for his performance in “Distracted” at MiraCosta College, a role Kristianne explains he was cast in on his own merit.
Yeah, there’s a lot more, but you should probably read it yourself.

The New Village Arts Theatre is presenting essayist David Sedaris’ The Santaland Diaries December 10-23, 2009. The hilarious one-man show stars San Diego actor Daren Scott and is based on an Sedaris’ essay about the time he spent working as a Christmas Elf in Santaland at Macy’s department store.
The New York Times called the play, “A delightfully thorny account of working as a Yuletide elf at Macy’s. Priceless observations, both outrageous and subtle. Destined to hold a place in the annals of American humor writing.”
Tickets are only $20 and available online or by calling the box office at (760-433.3245).

San Diego Union-Tribune writer James Hebert gave Carlsbadistan’s New Village Arts Theatre’s production of Things We Want a good review today.
What really makes “Things We Want” spin, though (under Berger’s deft direction), is the way the brothers end up trading personas and pathologies over the course of the play. They cope with the traumas they’ve been dealt as best they can, and Sherman doesn’t try to pretend they can transcend their past with a snap of the fingers. . . But in this strange (and strangely entertaining play), they do reach some truce in the war within their hearts. . . As Teddy puts it: “I’m not happy. I just have better regrets than most people.”
Things We Want runs through October 11, 2009. Click here for tickets or here for more information.

Tonight, September 17, 2009, Carlsbadistan’s own professional theatre company New Village Arts Theatre kicks of their ninth season with the play Things We Want, by Jonathan Marc Sherman.
Things We Want is young, hip, exciting and a great match for the men in NVA’s Ensemble. Three adult brothers are living together once again in their childhood apartment, struggling to define themselves while pursuing their desires and dreams. A darkly comic look at the illusions we have about what makes us happy – and what is within our power to change.
The Village Arts Theatre is located at 2787 State St, Carlsbad, CA. Click here to buy tickets or call (760) 433-3245.
