Sheraton Carlsbad Officially Open

by The Editors on March 12, 2008

She1719Wb1 MdWhile it’s obvious we were not invited to any grand opening festivities at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa on February 25, 2008, we are still glad that Carlsbadistan’s newest resort hotel is keeping things on schedule.

This magnificent new property offers 129 gorgeous guestrooms, including 13 suites, complete with ocean or fairway views. The hotel will offer an additional 121 rooms, scheduled to open in May 2008. All rooms and suites are outfitted with comfortable leather seating, oversized work desks and 32″ LCD flat panel televisions and the signature Sheraton Sweet SleeperTM Bed – a nine-layered custom-designed ensemble boasting an exquisitely comfortable, plush mattress, fluffy down hypoallergenic pillows, crisp cotton sheets, cozy blanket and signature blanket and duvet. Sheraton also gives its guests front-row seats to high-quality, in-room programming through its Scene@Sheraton entertainment package, including sneak previews and premier sports programming.

Looks like we may have to plan another vacation at home to see if it beats out the Four Seasons Aviara.

Tuberculosis Testing At La Costa Resort

by The Editors on January 25, 2008

After a former La Costa Resort and Spa worker was diagnosed with tuberculosis the County Health and Human Services Agency is now testing more La Costa workers.

The resort didn’t specify yesterday how many of its 1,000 employees have been tested but said that everyone who had been in contact with the former golf maintenance worker has received a skin test. No other active cases have been found.

Luckily, TB is typically spread “through the air – not through food or touch ,” so resort visitors are “not at risk because the worker (who left the resort in November) hadn’t interacted with the public.”

Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa Opening Soon

by The Editors on December 15, 2007

Image001-1

When development is done well, it’s all good. And the new Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa, which opens in February 2008, appears to be doing it right. Tucked in behind Legoland and right next to The Crossings Golf Course, the hotel will have 350 guest rooms, 13 suites and 25,000 square-feet of meeting space, a new spa and a restaurant. While The Ocean Pearl Spa sounds great, we’re looking forward to the Twenty/20 Grill. Check this:

The airy 5,200 square-foot destination restaurant will offer artisanal vineyard California cuisine in an elegant, yet casual setting with 1,700 square-feet outdoor dining patio and sweeping views of the Carlsbad coast. With its globally inspired menu anchored in locally grown, organic products, sample dishes planned for the winter season include Char-grilled Lamb Loin with a roast red grape sauce, crispy potato croutons, and a fresh wild berry salad; and the Local Growers Vegetable Risotto, a vegetable lover’s paradise with char-grilled tomatoes, baked zucchini, eggplant, warm fennel and corn.

Great, now we’re hungry and we have to wait two months. Hopefully it will be as good as it sounds. We’ll let you know. The Sheraton is accepting reservations for arrival on or after March 15, 2008. Sounds like a great place for a big wallet spring break.

Giuliani’s Posh La Costa Lifestyle

by The Editors on October 15, 2007

Ph2007101501086The Washington Post has a blog called The Trail that is “a daily diary of Campaign 2008.”

In today’s update they were listing all the money that Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani has been spending on what they are calling “posh hotels.” Guess who was near the top of the list? Our own La Costa Resort and Spa:

Whether it was $2,010 at the Greenbrier Hotel in West Virginia, $4,034 at La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., or $5,370 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, the former mayor found himself top-notch lodging.

Top-notch indeed. Wonder how much they charged him for valet parking?

Carlsbad Timeshares Get Wireless

by The Editors on July 11, 2007

Data Images 147142P1While announcements of hotels featuring Wi-Fi wireless is beginning to remind us of the old motel signs that advertised, “FREE Color TV,” it is good to know when planning a Carlsbad timeshare vacation that Grand Pacific Resorts has signed a deal with 5G Wireless to provide wireless Internet service it all of its resorts.

That means the Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort, Carlsbad Seapoint Resort, and the currently under construction Sheraton Carlsbad Resort will have solid wireless Internet coverage all over their grounds. So bring your laptops and annoy your family by working on your vacation. . . because now you can.

La Costa Has You Working For The Weekend

by The Editors on July 6, 2007

31010932Seems everywhere we look lately we’re stumbling into stories about the La Costa Resort & Spa. The golf course has a new “Legends Trail,” the Acura Classic is leaving, a reporter may have impersonated the mayor of Chicago, a pond cleaner dies, and now LA Times writer Valli Herman says that the resort has a lot to offer, but you have to find it yourself.

. . . during my late June visit to the iconic Carlsbad complex, I found that even if you’re paying $350 a night ($409 with taxes and fees), the world demands a measure of self-reliance before those proverbial doors open or wet towels vanish and newspapers appear. . . .Instead of the anticipation of their needs, guests need to make their needs clear by phoning housekeeping. . .

Ouch. What’s that they say about there being no such thing as bad PR?

Legendary La Costa Needs A Major

by The Editors on July 4, 2007

05MediumrygolfThe La Costa Resort and Spa is losing the Acura Tennis Classic after 16 years, add to that the fact that this was the first year since 1968 that the resort didn’t play host to a PGA event and you have a dismal year ahead for professional golf and tennis in Carlsbad. The OC Register’s Randy Youngman has taken this as a chance to look back on all the great moments at La Costa and drop a little knowledge on La Costa’s new Legends Trail.

The most memorable tournament I covered at La Costa was the rain-shortened Mercedes in 1997, when the reigning Rookie of the Year on the PGA Tour beat the reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year in a one-hole playoff, in dramatic fashion. . . . The rookie’s name was Tiger Woods. The Player of the Year was Tom Lehman.

It’s good to know that La Costa holds so many good memories for so many people, because that mean the chances of more memories being created in the future are good. Youngman says there are rumors that the LPGA may be coming to La Costa in the future and La Costa’s new director of golf Dave Doerr said, “We would welcome them with open arms.”

Carlsbad’s Tourism Sigafoose

by The Editors on July 1, 2007

This week’s Carlsbadistan What Do You Think? poll featured a question about tourism and the Village of Carlsbad. It appears that we’re not the only one’s wondering what the City is doing to help local businesses gather visitor dollars, according to the Coast News.

Former Carlsbad Councilwoman Norine Sigafoose thinks that the city isn’t holding up its end of the bargain when it comes to promoting tourism in Carlsbad. The Carlsbad Tourism Business Improvement District collected $770,000 in revenue from a dollar-per-night assessment of each occupied room in the city in the 2006/2007 fiscal year. Sigafoose thinks that number, which goes toward promoting Carlsbad, should be twice as much. “The city was obligated to double that,” she said. “I’m really upset with how this has turned out.”

Unfortunately, for Sigafoose (who owns the Seashore on the Sand hotel), it appears that the word “matching funds” never appeared in Ordinance number NS-778. Guess she’ll have to pay for her own advertising in the short term.

The Acura Classic’s Last Serve

by The Editors on June 28, 2007

Acura

After 16 years at the La Costa Resort and Spa Carlsbad’s Acura Tennis Classic is leaving. The event has apparently been sold to the Women’s Tennis Association Tour. This means we all have one more chance to watch the best women in tennis battling it out under the summer sun in Carlsbad, July 28-Aug. 5. And this year the field could be the best ever, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.

The Acura Classic is shaping up as an event that smacks of the tournament at Wimbledon, only without the rain.

This truly is one of Carlsbad’s best events. Click here to purchase tickets and get more information.

Dead in The Water Hazard at La Costa

by The Editors on June 26, 2007

070626AerialToday at 8:30 AM, in a water hazard on the second hole of La Costa Resort and Spa’s North Course an Environmental Waterworks worker who was cleaning the lake apparently fell into 3 feet of water and then disappeared. A co-worker who saw him alerted emergency crews and two other began immediately search for the man.

He was skimming the water’s surface to remove algae, leaves and debris, when he fell into deeper water. . . It appears his waders filled up with water and he drowned, said Carlsbad police Lt. Kelly Cain. . . . Rescue divers found his body tangled in weeds about 12 feet underwater, said Battalion Chief Mike Kennedy of the Carlsbad Fire Department.

It was reportedly the man’s first day on the job. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
