Carlsbad writer Lynn Alley is blowing out one of our secret lunch spots to the world in the San Diego Union Tribune with her nice write up of Pelly’s Fish Market.
When it’s time to grab a meal out in Carlsbad, the California Bistro at the Four Seasons Aviara might be my dining room of choice, but since I live in the real world, I’ve got little places that I turn to for a good, honest bite. . . . My current favorite is Pelly’s Fish Market.
While we’re not going to agree with her on the California Bistro tip (we prefer the Blue Fire Grill at La Costa), she’s dead-on with Pelly’s.

While strolling through The Village Saturday morning we rolled into the twice weekly Carlsbad Farmers’ Market that is held in the parking lot on at 2930 Roosevelt Street between Grand Avenue and Carlsbad Village Drive. The market features delicious produce including the best tomatoes we’ve ever tasted (thanks for the samples) as well as fresh salsa, hand-made tortilla chips, locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables, and a large assortment of fresh flowers.
We all know it exists and that it’s been there for a while, however, it’s good every once in a while to refresh the memory with an in-person visit. The Farmers’ Markets are held “Rain or Shine” every Wednesday 1pm -5pm and Saturday 9am-1pm. Mom was right: fresh food is good food.

Some evenings when we don’t get the right table at our favorite Carlsbadistan restaurant we end up walking to three of four eateries before settling on the right one. On October 21, 2007 from 3 to 6 PM the Carlsbad Village Business Association is encouraging people to restaurant hop as they present the fourth annual Flavors Of The Village.
Take a stroll through the Village of Carlsbad and enjoy samples of the most delicious menu items from the best restaurants in the Village. . . The Village will be alive with live music, great food, wine and champagne, and desserts served at select Village Merchants. . . Gather a group of friends and family and enjoy a great day in the Village.
Carlsbadistan restaurants involved include several of our favorite places: Vigilucci’s Cucina Italiana, Fidel’s, Le Passage French Bistro (the best lunch in North County), Pizza Port Carlsbad Brewery, Fresco Trattoria & Bar, Knockout Pizzeria, KoKo Beach, and a couple of our not so favorite places. For tickets visit one of the participating businesses or call 760/434-2553.

We all know that deep down in its soul Oktoberfest is really just a beer holiday. And we went to the 25th Annual Rotary Oktoberfest in Carlsbad’s Holiday Park today with that in mind. But like any thought, reality hits the senses a little harder. Let’s just say there are a lot of people in Carlsbad who really, really enjoy drinking beer. Not alone. Not in their own homes, but out in a park with all their friends. And that means that Carlsbad’s Oktoberfest is crowded, noisy, and filled with smiles.
Two different Rotary groups sponsor this event according to Gene Forsyth: Rotary of Carlsbad, and Carlsbad High Noon Rotary. “It’s a joint effort by two clubs,” he said while serving up some wine from the Carlsbad Coastal Winery. “And we’re doing it to support our charities. Not just one in particular. Most of the money from this event will go to the Women’s Resource Center and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Carlsbad.”
The long tables were full of people dining on a $10 traditional German dinner of Bratwurst, knockwust, German potato salad, sauerkraut, and a dinner roll. It was mostly good. And though the crowd featured a few too many tough dudes with beer buzzes, it was a great way to spend the afternoon.
Follow the link for the rest of the photos. And if you’re reading this before 10 PM tonight, cruise on over and check it out. You’ll probably get there just in time for the chicken dance and a few fights. . . if you’re lucky.

We all know that Germany is famous for its beer, however, they also have some great wines. And that wine will be highlighted as The Wine Spot hosts their own version of Oktoberfest this weekend (October 5-7). Stop by Friday from 4-8 PM, Saturday from 1-8 PM and Sunday 1-5 PM for some great German wine (and beer) and some complimentary German fare. . . we’ve been meaning to check this out, so maybe this week we’ll stop by 2801 Roosevelt St. on our way to the Carlsbad Rotary’s Oktoberfest in Holiday Park.

[Click HERE for all the photos] This year the Carlsbad Education Foundation’s 11th Annual Taste of Carlsbad joined up with Art Splash for a combined event that made us think was a perfect Saturday afternoon excursion in Carlsbadistan. And from the packed isles and lines at the booths (especially Darios) we don’t think we were alone.
Taste of Carlsbad features exemplary cuisine from twenty Carlsbad restaurants. One $20 donation to the CEF buys visitors a card good for samples at 15 of the restaurants. Before you jump into the photos here were our favorites: El Puerto Mexican Food (next to the Golden Tee in the Albertson’s parking lot), The El Camino Real Grille (by the people who created Savory), Knock Out Pizza (in the Village), Lola’s, and the Tri-City Medical Center’s Cafeteria.

On the weekend of September 22-23, 2007 Carlsbad’s Armada Drive will be closed to traffic and then covered in chalk drawings, lined with booths, and filled with art afficionados as Art Spash returns for it’s 5th year.
ArtSplash … is a FREE, two-day, non-profit, family event that promotes and benefits arts within the community. ArtSplash is a community-wide partnership of organizations and businesses working together to establish an Annual Family Event showcasing North County.
Art Splash features chalk drawings, live art performances, musicians, street entertainers and great food in the form the concurrently running 11th Annual Taste of Carlsbad. And trust us, Art Splash is a lot cooler than its event logo logo would suggest. Don’t miss it.

As much as we hate the idea of blowing out our favorite local breakfast spot, we would be remiss is we didn’t mention the cleanest, smoothest, warmest spot for morning meals in Carlsbad: Don’s Country Kitchen located at 2885 Roosevelt St. in The Village.
The first thing to know is that there is no Don. So don’t ask for him. Up until six and a half years ago there was a Bob, but then Bob and his wife sold the restaurant to Roberto Sanchez. And Roberto did the right thing: he left the menu untouched and kept rolling with the same great tasting food. Click the link for rest of the story.
