Per Se Renamed Before It Even Opens

by The Editors on July 28, 2009

Paon-Logo-150Two weeks ago we mentioned that a new California French restaurant was opening in the new oddly Tudor building that snaked behind Beach City Smoothies on the corner of Roosevelt and Carlsbad Village Drive in the Village of Carlsbadistan. In that post the restaurant was called Per Se. But that was then. The wine bar (which is currently open) and the restaurant (which is reportedly opening soon) is now called Paon, according to restaurant’s website.

Whatever they call it, we’re still looking forward to checking it out when it opens early in August.

Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza Reopening June 25

by The Editors on June 13, 2009

According to a story on the San Diego News Network Sami Ladecki will have a grand re-opening for the the Carlsbad Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza on June 24, 2009 with an “invite-only” benefit for the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Partners in Education Foundation. The restaurant was gutted by a gas explosion on July 29, 2008 which caused more than $1 million in damages.

Sammy’s will then open to the public on June 25, 2009. We’re glad to have Sammy’s back. Seems we still have a gift certificate that we thought we’d have to leave Carlsbadistan to redeem.

Twenty-One Flavors of Carlsbadistan

by The Editors on June 1, 2009

053109 22

The one thing we learned yesterday at the annual Flavors of The Village restaurant tour is that one hour is not enough time to walk (or shuttle) to 23 different Carlsbadistan eateries. And we knew that. We saw the map, we planned ahead, but sometimes Sunday afternoons can sneak up on us.

By the time we’d made it to the corner of State and Grand to purchase our tickets from Christy Johnson it was a little after 5 PM. That should have meant sprint mode. Sadly, we didn’t know how late it was until we tried to get in the door at The Carlsbad Chocolate Bar at about 10 minutes to 6 PM. It was already locked down. And we were bummed.

Not to say that our hour on the streets of The Village was wasted. With what Johnson said were about 200 people ahead of us we found restaurants loaded with lots of good food wherever we went (even if it was occasionally difficult to find).

Follow the jump for the rest of the story and more photos. . .

Carlsbad City Council Says Yes To BJs

by The Editors on April 8, 2009

BjsSay hello to another chain restaurant in Carlsbad as the Carlsbadistan City Countil has given a unanimous thumbs up for a BJ’s Restaurant Brewhouse to be built across the street from the Carlsbad Premium Outlets, according to a story in the North County Times.

Before voting to grant the Carlsbad project a conditional use permit, Councilman Mark Packard said Tuesday that he could “heartily endorse” the proposal because he had heard great things about BJ’s food from his son-in-law, who has visited the company’s Temecula restaurant.

That’s the kind of research we’ve come to expect from our elected leaders.

St. Paddy’s Day At Tip Top Meats

by The Editors on March 17, 2009

TiptopjohnNorth County Times writer Paul Sisson turned in a great story today (photos by Bill Wechter) about St. Patrick’s day with Tip-Top Meats‘ owner Big John Haedrich.

Ironically, Haedrich —- the owner of Tip Top Meats and a hospitality icon in Carlsbad —– is German, not Irish. His nickname reflects his 6-foot-plus frame and his thick hands, which he used to butcher his first hog at age 12. . . .A fourth-generation butcher, he said he long ago learned the secret to cooking a great St. Patty’s Day plate: . . . “Use choice meat, put it in a good mild cure and sell it for a medium price,” Haedrich said, whose butcher shop and restaurant sits near the corner of Palomar Airport and Paseo del Norte, just east of Interstate 5.

Whatever it is Big John is doing, we like it. And so will you.
