At first we were bummed that our reality TV dreams of a Legoland Christmas tonight had been shattered like a champagne flute on the sidewalk as reality TV stars Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott announce that they’re canceling “due to illness.” Then we realized that things couldn’t be better (at least for the dads in the crowd).
The good news is that Legoland’s substitute tree lighter will be that saucy ball of mom hotness, former Miss USA Ali Landry who most of us know as the Doritos Girl. Landry’s partner on the Lego hearth will be Mad Men actor Rich Sommer (who plays Harry Crane on the best show ever to be on TV). It’s so nice when the second string is better than the starters.
The Legoland treelighting begins tonight (November 30, 2009) at 5:30 followed by a performance by The Jumpitz, Santa’s arrival, and then some holiday fireworks. The tree lighting honors the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California. The festivities are included with regular park admission which costs a whopping $65 for adults, $55 for children 3-12. For a family of four that’s only $240. “Tis the season, indeed.

Carlsbadistan vert skater Paul-Luc Ronchetti, 16, got a little well-deserved coverage in the San Diego Union-Tribune yesterday in a story by Glae Thien.
Turning pro this year was a natural step for Ronchetti, given his showing on the Free Flow circuit. With his amateur title last year, he qualified for the last stop on the Dew Tour and placed ninth. . . .“This year, I started off on a low point, and I just kept skating and getting into the competitions, and slowly it got better,” Ronchetti said. “Definitely, each contest gave me more experience each time, and that gave me more confidence.”
Ronchetti finished 13th on the Dew Tour this year.

When Carlsbadistan resident Heather Hultgren (pictured right with her family) realized that her parents couldn’t be around every night to read bedtime stories to their grandson, she decided she could fix that problem and launch a web business at the same time according to a Dave Good story on SanDiego.com.
Using technology that Hultgren says wasn’t available two years ago, a CherishedVoices.com subscriber is able to dial a toll free number and record a personal message, tell a story, or read from one of the books in the Cherished Voices library. . . “You have up to an hour to talk,” she asks. “You can share whatever is in your heart.” . . Hultgren then edits the recording into the finished narrative.
Hultgren then puts the recording on a CD and ships it with the book that was read directly to the child for $49.95. Which is much cheaper than a cross-country flight.

Few things are sadder than former TV stars forced to sell-out their private lives by staring in reality TV shows. That said, it’s nice that Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott (stars of the reality TV show Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood) care enough about getting free admission to Carlsbadistan’s Legoland California theme park that are willing to actually do some work, i.e. plugging in the annual Legoland Christmas tree.
The couple and their children, Liam and Stella, will be joined by one of the hottest children’s entertainment groups, The Jumpitz® for a special holiday performance with an appearance by Santa himself! . . . After the 30-foot-tall LEGO tree is lit, fireworks light up the sky and snow showers Park guests from above kicking off LEGOLAND California’s month-long Holly Jolly Holidays presented by Western Dental.
The holiday extravaganza begins at 5:30 PM Monday night, November 30, 2009. Us? We’ll probably just catch the fireworks from the lower parking lot of the Carlsbad Sheraton.

Councilman Matt Hall with Joe Devins, Claire and her sister Amelia.
On November 21, 2009 Carlsbad was one of 40 communities around the US that took part in the Give Thanks Walk to support St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The walk was held at the Westfield Plaza Camino Real. TK Arnold was there and kind enough to contribute photos and the following details:
Carlsbad was selected in large part because of little Claire Devins, who was barely 2 when diagnosed in November 2006 with a deadly form of brain cancer with just a 10% survival rate. The doctors at Children’s Hospital in San Diego gave the Devins family–Joe, Liz and four other kids–little hope, but while at the mall to show Baby Claire what was then the new carousel she saw a sign for St. Jude.
The whole Devins family went to Memphis and stayed for six months while Claire underwent cancer treatment. She’s now cancer free and the whole family credits St. Jude with saving her life, all at no cost to the family. Lots of the Devins’ friends from the St. Patrick Parish School community came out to help with the walk, and Councilman Matt Hall came out to present Liz and her family with a proclamation from Mayor Bud Lewis declaring November 21 Claire Devins Day in the city of Carlsbad.

The Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad received 175 free Halloween costumes thanks to a donation made by WWE action figure maker Jakks Pacific, Inc. The company donated 100,000 costumes to Boys & Girls Clubs in Southern California this year.
“The kids – and their parents – were absolutely thrilled to learn they were getting free costumes for Halloween,” said Program Director Patty Tate. “Due to the tough economy, many families are not able to provide costumes for their children this season. It was so much fun seeing the smiles on their faces!”
It’s also nice that the makers of toys like Ruthless Aggression, Unmatched Fury, and Maximum Aggression action figures can do something positive for the kids of Southern California as well. Through it’s philanthropic arm JAKKS Cares the company has donated more than $20 million in toys, school supplies and monetary endowments to millions of underprivileged children around the world.
