Paying visitors at Legoland today (February 6, 2009) got an extra bonus as Herb “Moo Moo” Evans of the world famous Harlem Globetrotters put on a one-man basketball show today.
Evans captivated a large audience of Park guests with his basketball wizardry and the hilarious antics that have made the Harlem Globetrotters a family favorite for generations. . . . “The best part of being a Harlem Globetrotter is the kids’ smiles,” said Evans. “Their faces just light up when I do what I do.”
One of the biggest smiles Evans got today was from 4-year-old Carlsbadistan resident Liam Cunnings. Those who missed Evans at Legoland can see the entire Globetrotters team take on the losing team in basketball (The Washington Generals) at the Sports Arena on February 13 and 15, 2009.

The master model designers at Legoland have created the entire 56th Quadrennial Presidential Inauguration on the steps of the Capitol in Miniland U.S.A. inside the park.
President-elect Obama, his family, Vice President-elect Joseph Biden and his wife Jill, President George Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and wife Lynn, along with former President George Bush Sr. and Barbara Bush have all been created out of hundreds of LEGO bricks. More than one-thousand mini-figures in all were created to show Park guests what the real inauguration in Washington D.C. might look like.

It really looks amazing. Luckily we have until May 25, 2009 to check it out. (Click the photos to see them full-size).

To be honest, we love kicking off the New Year properly, however, we’ve never liked staying up ’till midnight to do it. That’s why for the past couple years we’ve been going to Legoland where we can watch the “brick drop” at 6 PM and be home before all the guns start going off.
Here’s what’s going on tonight:
Like the famous Times Square party, Kids’ New Year’s Eve features a countdown followed by a huge LEGO® brick dropping 22-feet into 2009 along with a dazzling fireworks display over Miniland. The event also features a special performance by kids’ pop-rocker Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players.
The celebration begins at 3 PM today and is included with a regular admission.

Online fee collection website Count Me In is out of money and that included $70,000 of dues paid by parents of Carlsbad Youth Baseball players that never made it to the league, according to a story in the LA Times.
Tom Watson, president of Carlsbad Youth Baseball in San Diego, said more than 90% of parents paid for their children’s fees with credit cards through Count Me In and the group was missing $70,000. . . . “It’s going to be a challenge for us to operate our programs,” he said. “The kids and their parents are going to suffer.”
Count Me In founder Terry Drayton says he was “he was in discussions with three possible investors to raise funds to pay back their money”
How did we get here? We made some errors with the lack of financial oversight,” Drayton said in a telephone interview. “At the end of the day this is my responsibility. I’m the CEO and my job is to fix it.”
Oddly, there is no mention of the problems on Count Me In’s website. Which you’d think would be step one in “fixing” things. So far no criminal charges have been filed. Maybe they should be.

After a bit of a false start opening on August 11, 2008 (it closed three months later on November 1, 2008) Legoland is happy to announce the December 23, 2008 grand re-opening of their newly remodeled Sea Life Aquarium.
The most stunning change at SEA LIFE is the addition of two 6-foot-long zebra sharks, and 40 cownose rays to the Lost City of Atlantis Display. These new residents make SEA LIFE Aquarium at LEGOLAND California Resort home to more sharks than any of the other 28 SEA LIFE Aquariums world wide. Other new creatures throughout the Aquarium include chocolate chip sea stars, blue linkia sea stars, African general stars, sea apples, Flying Gurnard and juvenile Port Jackson Sharks.
Having seen neither of the iterations in person we’re going to have to guess that now, it’s even better.

It was a perfect evening of holiday fun as the Carlsbad’s Leo Carrillo Ranch was magically transformed into Holiday at the Rancho tonight December 6, 2008 from 5-8 PM.
The evening featured crafts for the kids (Grinch masks and collars) with help from Miss Teen Carlsbad and her court, a bouncy bounce, soup in bread bowls and almost hot apple cider, a Christmas tree lighting by The Grinch himself, plus singing from the the Carlsbad Chamber Choir and music by the Carlsbad High School Chamber Orchestra.
The Grinch (who was as real as a Grinch could be) greeted everyone by the pool with a wicked smile and a furry lap. While at the other end of the ranch families enjoyed an outdoor showing of the Jim Carrey film, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Follow the jump for all the photos.

Hey kids, on Sunday afternoon December 7, 2008 Santa Claus is coming to town, but he won’t be in overweight sleigh pulled by countless raindeer. No. He will be riding on the back of an antique Carlsbadistan fire engine. Join Santa and his elves at The Shops at Village Faire at the corner of Carlsbad Village Drive and Carlsbad Blvd.
There will be crafts, snacks, singing, dancing, and the annual Rotary Christmas tree lighting ceremony officiated by Mayor Bud Lewis. Click here for all the pictures and video from last year’s event.
