Legoland Lights The Tree Everynight

by The Editors on November 26, 2008

Holiday FireworksIf you, like us, just can’t get enough Christmas cheer each year, then this may be something to check out. Legoland is going to light their Christmas Tree on December 1, 2008 and then turn it on every night until Christmas, of course, it’s a little bigger deal than just turning on the light.

The world’s largest LEGO® Christmas tree lights up LEGOLAND® California on Monday, Dec. 1 at 5:30 p.m. followed by nightly tree lightings until Dec. 24 at 5 p.m. A selected guest pulls the switch lighting the 30-foot-tall tree built with more than 245,000 DUPLO® bricks. Holiday Block Party is Dec. 20 – 31 featuring life-size LEGO Santa plus nightly fireworks. Designed for children 2 to 12, the family theme park has more than 50 rides, shows and attractions.

All of this (plus performances by Drew Seeley of High School Musical: The Concert and 8th place American Idol finisher Michael Johns) is included with the price of admission (kids 3 – 12 and Seniors 60+ $52; Adults $62). General Parking $10. Information: (760) 918-LEGO.

Looks like even Santa Claus has been hit by the recent economy woes as he’s spending a lot of time loitering at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets this holiday season. • Nov 28 – Dec 23: Mon – Sat: 10am – 9pm; Sun: Noon – 6pm

Robots Battle At Legoland

by The Editors on November 20, 2008

Robotics1

It’s not like the robot battles out of the Steven Spielberg movie AI, but a kinder, gentler, smarter kind of robot competition as kids like Cameron Di Robertis from Team Evil Genius Too (pictured above) flock to Legoland to put their “autonomous robots” up against others in The First Lego League Tournament December 6-7, 2008..

On Dec. 6, 2008, LEGOLAND hosts the FLL Southern California Championship Tournament and as well as the FLL Los Angeles Region Championship Tournament on Dec. 7. Competition is expected to be fierce as 102 teams of children ages 9 to 14 compete in using robots to understand and create solutions for one of today’s most critical environmental issues: climate conditions. Winners from these tournaments advance to the FIRST World Festival. . . .The tournament challenges teams to use science and technology as they build, program and test an autonomous robot to compete with other teams’ robots in an obstacle course.

And yes, these events are more fun than they sound. All the info after the jump.

Torch Club Builds Leadership Skills

by The Editors on November 19, 2008

Torchclub

Former Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad’s Youth of the Year Toni Brown recently joined the staff at the La Costa Branch, and immediately put her leadership attributes to good use by organizing Torch Club, a service club for members ages 10-12. First order of business? Electing officers in a fiercely contested campaign complete with slogans, debates, and ballots.

Since then, the “Torchers” have been hard at work organizing activities for the younger members, implementing fundraising ideas (including selling great healthy snacks like smoothies!), and building leadership skills. Their first big event was the Family Fun Festival held on November 6.

“Torch Club helps meet the special character development needs of younger adolescents,” said Unit Director Jim Salvia. “Toni’s background is a perfect fit; she’s a cool mentor for the tweens.”

Legoland Aquarium Closing For Remodel

by The Editors on November 1, 2008

H Feature

The Sea Life Aquarium that just opened at Carlsbad’s Legoland on August 11, 2008 is shutting down on November 11, 2008 and will remain closed until December 26, 2008 while the park “updates” the attraction.

Modifications being made to the Aquarium include adding an interactive LEGO sand castle building area; enhancing the LEGO animation in the Lost City of Atlantis display; adding décor to the Lake Tahoe area; remodeling the front and Park-side SEA LIFE entrances; and improvements to the interactive audio/visual technologies currently being used throughout the Aquarium.

Sounds like someone didn’t get this project done right the first time.

Brick Or Treating At Legoland All Month

by The Editors on October 8, 2008

Brick Or Treat

While the name “Brick-Or-Treat” tends to make us think of kids weilding bricks to threaten home-owners into handing over the candy, it’s actually a fun family Halloween event being held all month at Legoland. Lego brick? Get it?

The theme park’s annual family-friendly Halloween celebration, presented by Union Bank of California, also commemorated its first-ever Brick-or-Treat Party Nights nighttime event with a special visit from nearly 600 members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad and San Marcos. This year, the Park hosts
Party Nights every Saturday in October from 5 to 9 p.m.

Just look at all those smiling faces. Brick-or-Treat only tickets are available after 5 PM. For more info click the link.

The Force Is With Legoland This Weekend

by The Editors on September 12, 2008

Starwars Image

It’s all Star Wars at Legoland on Saturday September 13 -14, 2008 as the 501st Legion of Rebel Forces storms Legoland. While normally we wouldn’t recommend encouraging your children to hang out with grown men dressed like Storm Troopers and Wookies, we’re pretty sure this will be a fun day at the park for all Star Wars fans.

Legoland guests need not travel to a galaxy far, far away to take part in out-of-this-world fun activities like the Droid Hunt, video game battles, trivia competitions and Clone Trooper scavenger hunts. Whether they favor the Dark Side or support Luke Skywalker’s cause, guests are encouraged to dress as their favorite Star Wars characters and participate in daily costume contests for a chance to win prizes valued at more than $500!

These are definitely the droids you are looking for. Follow the jump for all the details.

by The Editors on September 6, 2008

Img400 Golden TicketIt’s getting to be a bit of old hat, but Carlsbadistan’s Legoland has won an Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket Award for Best Children’s Park for the fifth year in a row. Must be a lot of competition in that category.

Army and Navy Serves Up Discipline

by The Editors on September 5, 2008

Armynavy

It’s interesting to see how Carlsbad’s Army and Navy Academy promotes itself to the outside world. In a recent press release that went out on the wire recently they asked a rhetorical question: “Does your son need structure?” Well, apparently, they can give it.

The Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad, California is a residential college preparatory school that uses a service academy model to teach leadership and character development for boys in grades 7-12. Students learn to take responsibility, adhere to a daily schedule, and develop good habits. Whether it is making their bed, studying for a test or practicing for a game, students understand that they will be accountable for their actions as well as supported as they confront challenges.

Yeah, kind of like the Army or the Navy, but for boys who are too young to enlist. For people who need a place to store problem children, The Army and Navy Academy is perfect, and after all it’s beachfront.

Camping Pirates Invade Stagecoach Park

by The Editors on August 14, 2008

08SnoressplashThis Saturday night Aug.16-17, 2008 the Carlsbad Recreation Department is hosting the Snores & S’mores: Pirates Cove family camp-out at Stagecoach Community Park. But as the registration deadline was August 8, 2008, if this is news to you then you’re not going. Neither are we.

This unique event offers all the fun of camping, with the safety and conveniences provided by a local community center. The theme is “Pirates Cove,” taking participants on an overnight adventure to live the pirate’s life. Enjoy fun family activities such as searching for hidden treasure, family competitions, arts and crafts, outdoor family movie screening, popcorn and bonfires for s’more-making. Participants may choose to pitch a tent or sleep under the stars. A community barbecue is included in the price, or families may choose to bring their own food.

We are thinking about going on a late-night marshmallow raid just for the fun of it. Then we’ll be the pirates.
