Dog Mania, the store that carried high-end fashions, treats, and toys for pets (like Harry Barker Tennis Balls), packed up their doggie biscuits on January 17, 2010 and left the Carlsbad Village Faire. Calls to their phone number ended in a disconnected line.
The location, which is nearly invisible to passing traffic, has been home to several failed businesses over the past four years (Sonoma Valley Market). Wonder who will be next?

Carlsbadistan’s leading golf company Callaway Golf Co. “announced that its board of directors has declared a regular quarterly cash dividend of $0.01 per share on its common stock” and named a new boardmember, according to a story on San Diego Daily Transcript.
Adebayo O. Ogunlesi has been appointed to the company’s board of directors. He will begin serving immediately and will stand for election for a full one-year term at the company’s 2010 annual meeting of shareholders in May. . . Ogunlesi, 56, is chairman and managing partner of Global Infrastructure Management LLC, a private equity firm with over $5 billion in assets and that invests worldwide in infrastructure assets in the energy, transport, and water and waste industry sectors.
We did the math. If you own 100,000 shares of the company, you’ll get $1000 dividend. Sweet.

Carlsbadistan’s world famous weight loss company Jenny Craig has been sued by Weight Watchers over what they say are “deceptive claims” about weight loss rates, according to a story on Brandweek.
The Jenny Craig TV spot in question claims that consumers, on average, lose over two times as much weight as those on Weight Watchers’ program. It shows actress/spokesperson Valerie Bertinelli in a lab setting surrounded by “scientists,” where she refers to the comparative results as the outcome of a “major clinical trial run by serious lab geeks.”
Weight Watchers says no such “clinical trial” was ever conducted.
“The trials cited by Jenny Craig (available on its website) are, in fact, two separate studies, conducted ten years apart for entirely different purposes than comparing the efficacy of the Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers weight-loss programs . . . The Jenny Craig ‘trials’ do not relate to WWI’s current offerings.”
Sounds like a heavyweight title match or something. . .

Carlsbadistan-based trading card giant The Upper Deck is reportedly going to court on January 26, 2010 for allegedly counterfeiting 60,000 Yu-Gi-Oh! trading cards, according to a story in the North County Times.
In 2008, Konami Digital Entertainment, maker of the popular card game, brought a civil suit accusing Upper Deck of copyright infringement and counterfeiting their cards. Several Upper Deck executives refused to testify, but there was still undisputed testimony confirming that the company had manufactured fake cards, a statement from Konami said.
What a wonderful way to negotiate licensing fees. Nice that we tax payers can get involved, huh?

The Carlsbad Boys & Girls Clubs apparently played a large part in Gregorio’s Restaurant owner Greg Nelson’s life and because of that he has decided to donate the entire 2010 profits from the restaurant to the clubs, according to a post on the Gregorio’s Restaurant website.
People can’t always write checks, but we all need to eat,” Greg states simply. “Everyone does restaurant nights for charity; I took that idea and expanded it. . . .the Boys & Girls Club provided a place for my brother and me every day after school,” said Greg Nelson. “It’s critical the Club is able to continue offering the growing number of youth in our community a safe place that helps them grow into productive, responsible and caring results. I hope everyone will come to Gregorio’s for a delicious meal, and support this important project at the same time.”
Nelson hopes to raise $250,000 to help the club complete their new Bressi Ranch Clubhouse. Not a bad way to go. We hope Gregorio’s is extremely profitable this year, because the Carlsbad Boys & Girls Clubs can always use the money.
