Carlsbad’s Farzan and Jen Dehmoubed have an idea they think will revolutionize the grocery bag world. They’re called Lotus Trolley Bags and the Orange County Register has the whole story.
The Lotus Trolley Bags are a riff on a popular shopping cart system used in Europe. Rolled up, the bundle is compact and hangs from the grocery cart while you shop. Unspooled, four bags hang from rods inside the cart, open and ready to receive milk, produce, dry goods and more as the cashier rings you up. . . “There are other bags on the market with similar functions but quality and customization to U.S. carts were big factors for us,” they said. “We wanted something that could last hundreds of times and had all the features we were looking for.”
The bag debuted in May and since then the Dehmoubed’s have reportedly sold over 10,000 of them. Not bad at all. Plus, anything is better than plastic, even if it’s costs $30 for four.

Award-winning actress and singer Hilary Duff helped Santa pull the switch to light the world’s largest LEGO® Christmas tree at Legoland California Resort during the 15th annual tree lighting ceremony in Carlsbad, California last night (Monday, November 27, 2017).
“We feel so fortunate to be at LEGOLAND California Resort, “ said Duff. “We spent the whole day with family and close friends and this is definitely one of our favorite places. We had the best stay at Legoland Hotel and now Luca wants to know why his room at home can’t look like the pirate bunk bed room at the hotel!”
At the ceremony, Legoland California Resort donated $10,000 on Duff’s behalf to Baby2Baby, which provides low-income children ages 0-12 years with diapers, clothing and other basic necessities. By distributing to non-profit partner organizations including homeless and domestic violence shelters, Head Start programs, foster care programs and children’s hospitals, Baby2Baby will serve more than 150,000 children in Los Angeles this year and tens of thousands more across the country through the Baby2Baby National Network.

Legoland, the Denny’s of amusement parks, is reportedly building its “most expensive park ever” in the town of Goshen, New York according to a story in Travel and Leisure.
The park will have a 250-room hotel filled with hundreds of Lego models and millions of Lego bricks, beloved Lego characters, and themed Lego zones to enjoy. . . Visitors will also find more than 50 rides, shows, and attractions, including Legoland Driving School, where kids can learn how to drive a Lego car.
Sound familiar? Yes. And we thought Carlsbad’s would be the only one in North America. Merlin Entertainments appears to be putting them in everywhere now. This one will cost a reported $350 million. We can’t wait to visit. Can you?
Chain seafood restaurant Bluewater Grill has finally opened their Carlsbad location, in the old Fish House Vera Cruz location at 417 Carlsbad Village Drive, according to story on NBC San Diego.
The menu offers sustainable seafood and shellfish – some of it caught off the California Coast by the restaurant’s harpoon fishing boat, Pilikia. . . Lunch and dinner menus created by Chef Art Garcia feature up to 40 varieties of fish. . . The restaurant also will offer a kids menu certified by the National Restaurant Association’s Kids Live Well program.
Bluewater operates their own swordfish harpoon boat, Pilikia, and serves “the finest quality locally harpooned swordfish in season,” according to their website. “Our fish is always the most pristine quality available, and we purchase directly from fisherman, in season, at the peak of quality and freshness.”
Carlsbad, California based surf burger and bar chain Islands is celebrating 35 years in business with the opening of their newest restaurant at The Shoppes At Carlsbad (formerly known as the Westfield Mall) at the corner of Highway 78 and El Camino Real.
“The Islands team is incredibly proud to be opening at The Shoppes at Carlsbad,” said Michael Smith, president of Islands Restaurants. “Carlsbad is our home base, and it means a lot to open our 10th San Diego location here, especially as we celebrate our 35th anniversary this year.”

If you’ve been by State St. in the heart of Carlsbad Village recently you may have noticed that Relm, the wine bar, has closed. Apparently, it was closed in order to reopen as OAK+elixir. Here’s what the owners are saying:
While we really enjoyed Relm during it’s time, we’re looking forward to a new season. But don’t worry, the wine bar is remaining! During the closure we’ve rejuvenated the space and reimagined the wine and food menus, and we can’t wait for you to experience the new O+E.

Ride Cyclery gave Carlsbad a good go, however, it seems they’ve decided that their location next to Bobby’s Hideaway Cafe on El Camino Real just North of Cannon wasn’t cutting it and announced that as of Friday, May 5, 2017 they are shutting the location down. Here’s how they pitched it:
Every good story has a beginning and an end. We had a good RIDE with RIDE Cyclery – Carlsbad, however today marks the end of the story for this particular shop. . . We would like to thank you for your support over the past few years! We made a ton of new friends, had fun playing in the dirt and are grateful for the things we learned through this venture.
Ride will still be servicing customers through their Encinitas and San Diego stores as well as their RIDE 2U Mobile Showroom and Service Van. It was nice having a great shop nearby and we will miss them, but we totally understand — that location was pretty much an invisible hole.
It’s Pineapple season at our favorite locally owned burger chain Islands Restaurant (they’re based Carlsbad, right?) And to kick off the season they’re loading up on some special pineapple menu items.
Starting April 1 and running through May 31, pineapple lovers will find a limited time Pineapple Pairing Menu with suggested pairings of popular pineapple dishes from the main menu. Favorites include the Hawaiian Burger, topped with fresh grilled pineapple and teriyaki sauce, paired with the Big Island Iced Tea; the Yaki Tacos, topped with a house-made grilled pineapple salsa, paired with a refreshing Piña Colada; and the Hoisin Beach Bowl, made with chunks of fresh grilled pineapple and grilled vegetables, served over brown rice with mahi mahi or chicken and paired with a signature Mai Tai. Each pairing is meant to complement and bring out the sweet and savory flavors of the fruit.
