by The Editors on April 18, 2012

Jpeg-6

On Thursday, April 19, 2012 the California Energy Commission is meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn Wavecrest Ballroom. At 5 PM citizens will have a chance to comment on NRG’s plans to build another powerplant on their property between the railroad tracks and Interstate 5.

NRG, owner of the 57-year old Encina Power Station, has made no guarantee that it will tear Encina down if the new plant is approved, meaning that Carlsbad would be home to two power plants on its coast. Several thousand local residents have opposed this project because: I-5 widening will create a dangerous situation. This plant will the closest ever to a major freeway; Fire safety concerns; Increase in air pollution; Disruption of view corridors; Violates Carlsbad land-use rules.

For more on why this powerplant is a bad idea and what you can do to make your voice heard, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Callaway Golf Gets Dicks On Top Flight Sale

by The Editors on April 6, 2012

Top-Flite Balls2 R620X349Carlsbadistan’s golf industry giant Callaway is reportedly selling their Top Flight brand (in its entirety) to big box sporting goods retailer Dicks Sporting Goods, according to a story in the U-T San Diego.

Bud Leedom of Leedom Asset Management San Diego called the purchase “one of the worst moves I have seen in the golf industry. It just lacked so much understanding of how much Top Flite had deteriorated over the years from lack of investment.” . . The sale is a sign that new Callaway Chief Executive Chip Brewer, who was hired from Adams Golf, is steering Callaway back to its roots in premium golf equipment, said Leedom.

And as we all know “getting back to our roots” is corporate America’s way of saying, “we got way over extended, screwed up and now we’re struggling to put the pieces back together.” Wonder what Callaway Creative Director Justin Timberlake has to say about this move?

Carlsbad Company Suing Facebook

by The Editors on March 21, 2012

27871 Sambreel-LogoSambreel, Carlsbad based social media company, has filed an antitrust lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California lawsuit against Facebook for unfair competition and interference with contract.

“We believe that Facebook engaged in a pattern of anticompetitive behavior in order to drive a competitor out of the market,” says Arie Trouw, CEO and President of Sambreel. “Although we attempted to work with Facebook to address each other’s concerns, those discussions did not progress, so we are moving forward with litigation. In addition to violating the law, we think Facebook’s actions — particularly its gating — violate its own first guiding principle: ‘People should have the freedom to share whatever information they want, in any medium and any format, and have the right to connect online with anyone — any person, organization or service — as long as they both consent to the connection (http://www.facebook.com/principles.php).'”

According to a story on the Courthouse New Service, Sambreel “offered a product known as PageRage, which challenged Facebook for sale of Internet display ads through the web browser add-on platform Yontoo.” For the rest of Sambreel’s side of the story, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

AOL Hitting A Serious Rough Patch

by The Editors on March 8, 2012

Patch Network LogoThis week AOL’s Patch, the network of faux-local cookie-cutter websites, is reportedly firing a slew of sales people. While the original rumor was that the company would fire 200, Patch PR and president Warren Webster refused to comment on that number, according to a story on Business Insider.

We asked one employee how many people were getting let go, and this person responded: “Why does it matter? It is 2 people on my team and other ones too. It stinks.” . . Says another: “I’m taking my 15k payout and running the hell away from this disaster.” . . The firings come after the experiment lost ~$150 million last year.

Business Insider goes on to explain in more detail:

The problem with Patch is a pretty classic one: it has too many employees (~1,500) working on a product that doesn’t get enough attention from consumers and, therefore, advertisers trying to reach consumer.

It won’t be long now. . .
