TGIF Aug. 14: Sue Palmer & Her Motel Swing

by The Editors on August 9, 2010

Sue 01As musical partner of blues diva Candye Kane, Sue Palmer has seen the world from both sides of the keyboard. This Friday night (August 14, 2010), however, she will see our backsides shaking to the boogie woogie blues of her Motel Swing Orchestra and they cast a spell on Carlsbadistan’s Calavera Park.

San Diego’s Queen of Boogie Woogie, Sue Palmer, has amazed audiences all over the world with her unique style and phenomenal left hand. She delights in creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the small clubs and cafes of 1932 Paris, Harlem, West Texas and Hawaii.

Prepare to be amazed. Show starts at 6 PM. You know the drill.

TGIF July 23: The Screamin’ Primas

by The Editors on July 19, 2010

ScreaminprimasjpgThe Screamin’ Primas are apparently a tribute band to a “rat pack” era performer of whom we had never heard. Oh, we’d heard his legendary songs like Jump Jive and Wail, Just a Gigolo, and That Old Black Magic, but we’d never heard the name Louis Prima. Now, thanks to TGIF Jazz in the Park on Friday, July 23, 2010 those who make it to Poinsettia Park will know his music just a little better.

Last year, their TGIF debut offered a wacky version of Prima’s late 1950s Las Vegas Night Club show featuring his acclaimed singer-wife Keely Smith that captured all the energy, emotion and excitement of the original.

Wacky jazz works. We guess. Show begins at 6 PM in Carlsbadistan’s Poinsettia Park. Don’t be late.

TGIF July 16: Louie Cruz Beltran

by The Editors on July 12, 2010

Louiebeltran 1Those who thought the whole summer of TGIF Jazz in the Park was going to be a re-run of past seasons will be surprised to know that this Friday’s (July 16, 2010) Poinsettia Park performance by Louie Cruz Beltran will be a first for the Latin percussionist and his band. The Silver Lake News said:

Louie Cruz Beltran and His Latin Jazz Ensemble perform a sizzling blend of Brazilian style and Afro-Cuban rhythms. Louie’s ability to adapt his sound has allowed him to tour internationally and to work in many different styles with such great performers as Pete Escovedo, Starrfire and The Sylvers.

Poinsettia Park (click for Google map) could use a little sizzle this summer. Show starts at 6 PM. Bring your bug spray and you’re dancing shoes.

Teens Learn To Stomp Boxes At MofMM

by The Editors on July 8, 2010

TeenworkshopWe’ve all known that the secret to great guitar playing is the having the right filter. We’ve never had the right filter, but now thanks to the Museum of Making Music Carlsbadistan’s teen guitarist will have the chance to learn it all from Joe Bigham on July 17, during the Get your Signature Sound teen workshop.

Students will experiment with stompboxes to learn how to manipulate sound through pedals and guitar techniques. Students will learn how to order, combine, and control multiple effects in traditional and unique ways. This workshop will give young musicians ideas and techniques to identify the sounds of artists they admire, and craft their own signature sound.

Maybe we’ll finally learn that solo part from Boston’s More Than A Feeling. . . wait, did they say “teen workshop?”

Class begins July 17, 2010 at 2 PM and costs $15 ($10 for members). All participants get a free “Art of the Stompbox” poster. Sign up now. Click the link.
