Tomorrow, November 13, 2008, at 10 AM join us as Carlsbadistan along with millions of Southern Californians will be taking part in The Great Southern California Shake Out, an earthquake preparedness drill organized by a collaboration of nonprofit, business, government and education partners within the Earthquake Country Alliance.
Just as with anything, to act quickly you must practice, practice, practice. In a big earthquake, there may be very little time to protect yourself before strong shaking knocks you down or drops something on you. Most earthquakes have a sharp jolt a few seconds before the strong shaking, and we need to Drop, Cover, Hold On immediately when we feel the jolt. By practicing we will act quickly, rather than waiting to see if the earthquake will be large. If it is, it may be too late to protect yourself.
How ironic would it be if there really was an earthquake tomorrow at 10 AM? Everyone would be prepared. Follow the link to sign-up and get more info.

Practitioners of what we like to call the SoCalChris flavor of Christianity who also snowboard and skateboard (and we know there are a lot of you in Carlsbadistan) will be stoked to check out the film Created To Create.
Created to Create is the story of a group of unwitting teenage skateboarders and snowboarders that when faced with the question “Why were you created?” yell back loud and clear. Professional skateboarder Christian Hosoi leads you through ten years with this band of boarders as they travel America doing what they were created to do.
The film which profiles Boarders For Christ premieres Monday November 17, 2008 from 6:30 to 9:00 PM at The North Coast Calvary Chapel, 1330 Poinsettia Lane, Carlsbadistan, CA 92011. The free show will also feature live music by Caleb Jude Green.

Economic depression humor comes to Carlsbadistan as The After 5 Club presents Thank You For Firing Me at the Carlsbad Village Theatre on November 22, 2008. According to the press release:
The show features a line up of side-splitting comedians—some who were former executives and who have made a career out of comedy —- as well as Malibu Mike, who plays “Dick Tator” the idiot boss in the lobby who will fire theater-goers as they enter the venue. Headlining the show is Vickie Barbolak, a San Diego comedian voted on network TV as America’s Funniest Mom.
This one-time show is Saturday, November 22, 2008 at the Carlsbad Village Theatre 2822 State Street. Tickets are available online for $18 or by calling (800) 754-9737.

On the heels of all the talk of “the quarry” being a good site for the new NRG Power Plant comes news that The Hanson/Heidelberg Cement Group is hosting a “reclamation plan workshop” on the site of their old quarry on Saturday, November 8, from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM.
The west end of this valley was acquired earlier this year for permanent, natural open space. The east end is home of one of the highest water falls, closest to the coast, in all of southern California. The City of Oceanside allowed the Quarry Creek shopping center to lay asphalt to within a few feet of the water falls and install a very large WalMart/Kohls sign above it. . . The area in question is in Carlsbad. The same developer wants to develop it. Many people want to acquire it as additional open space, “water falls to the waves” concept. This the stream that feeds the Buena Vista lagoon, the only fresh water lagoon in southern California.
The old quarry is located in the southwest corner of Highway 78 and College Blvd. Travel west on Haymar from College Blvd. past the auto dealer. Turn south at the Hanson sign. Follow directions to parking and workshop.

Don’t know what it was about the Carlsbadistan Street Faire, but today we actually had fun. The streets were packed, the sun was out, then it rained to cool things off a little, and then the sun came back out again.
Sure, many of the booths were stacked full of junk we wouldn’t even haul to the Goodwill, but it was so good seeing the streets filled with smiling faces that not even a fire-and-brimstone street preacher could bring us down.
We didn’t count, but it looked a lot like the biggest and best Street Faire ever. Follow the jump for all the photos.

Best Halloween street in The Neighborhood goes to Sycamore Street between Carlsbad Blvd. and Garfield with two huge, scary All Hallows Eve set-ups. Thelma and Evelyn (pictured above) said Sycamore had the best Cosmos in Carlsbad. Though we don’t know if they can be trusted. They only had one walker between them.
The biggest display was at Brian French and Jenny Mahoney’s house on the North side of Sycamore. It included a walk-through tunnel with huge Halloween dioramas filled with all kinds of creatures of the night. When someone asked Jenny if she was done building out her display she quickly answered, “No way. Never.”
And that’s great news for next year.

We originally wrote this in May, but as the bi-annual Carlsbadistan Street Faire and Junk Show is the same year after year after year we’re going to do our part for self-sustaining blogging and simply run it again:
Hard to believe it’s already been six months since the last Carlsbad Street Faire, but don’t kid yourself. Time flies.
On Sunday, November 2, 2008 expect to see the streets of Carlsbadistan shut down so traveling QVC salespeople can clutter our Village with push-up tents filled with junk of all shapes and sizes. Get out early and load up. And don’t forget the beer garden. Because it’s usually the safest place to stand in the whole faire. Plus, in the beer garden you won’t have to worry about tripping over any neon coyote doorstops with macramé tails.
And please, if you’re coming down to park in our neighborhood, please do it quietly and remember to pack your trash.

The Caribbean rhythms of the “steel pan” drums warm hearts around the world, but on November 1, 2008 at 5:30 PM at The Carlsbad Village Theatre, 2822 State Street, the sounds of Trinidad and Tobago come to Carlsbadistan on film and in person.
Keli Ross-Ma’u will be premiering his documentary In The Panyard and playing a live concert following the film.
Keli Ross-Ma’u, a music student from the U.S., studies and performs with the Pamberi Steel Orchestra in Trinidad, the birth place of the steel pan. Ross-Ma’u gets an insider’s experience of the Panyard, a community center where people of all ages from the surrounding neighborhood gather for steel pan rehearsals, and he learns how the country’s unique instrument and personal methods of teaching music create a close bond within the community.
All tickets are $22 at the door, or $20 if purchased in advance. Click the link to purchase tickets.

Those Carlsbad Rotarians may not know how to send out a press release or respond to email, but they surely know how to throw beer drinking parties. That’s why we’re so excited about the 26th Annual Carlsbad Rotary Oktoberfest being held in Holiday Park this Saturday, October 4, 2008 from 1 – 10 PM.
There nothing better than spending an afternoon drinking beer in a public park, doing the chicken dance, and helping the kids carve a pumpkin. Plus, it all helps raise money for some good causes. Hopefully we’ll see you there. . . in your lederhosen.
