After tonght’s TGIF Jazz In The Park rockin’ blues performance by guitar virtuoso Johnny “V” Vernazza and his band we can all wave good-bye to the Eastern Front and the miles of track homes that surround Stagecoach Park, because this is the last show on the ball field all summer. And it’s going to be a good one.
Johnny V has played guitar since 1963, but it was as a member of the Elvin Bishop Band that he gained the most notoriety. With six albums, endless touring, and the number three hit song in the country (Fooled Around And Fell In Love) Johnny and Elvin basically created the dual lead guitar style that is still a part of the southern rock sound today.
The show runs from 6 to 8 PM at Stagecoach Park. And the dance floor is huge, so don’t forget your dancing shoes.

For some reason, the words “violin” and “rock” don’t seem to go together.
We know, there’s a great cello part in that Nirvana song and The Killers are taking a violinist on tour this summer, but still. It just doesn’t seem right. Especially when Mark Wood (try to click that link without laughing) looks just like Yngwie Malmsteen.
Nevertheless, Carlsbadistan’s Museum of Making Music is hosting Mark in concert on Saturday July 26, 2008.
Wood’s musical retrospective of the modern electric violin features nearly 50 creations from his early experiments building electric violins. Mark recounts crafting violins as early as age 10. A progressive development of prototypes would eventually become the model for the 7-string Viper violin, a symbol of the modern rock violin revolution.
Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for museum members and $7 for students. For tickets and information, contact (760) 438-5996, ext. 212 or visit www.museumofmakingmusic.org.

We are continually amazed that Carlsbadistan’s action sports icon Tony Hawk can get out there and do a 24-city, 18-state Boom Boom Huckjam Tour in 38 days. But starting July 18 in San Antonio, Texas he’s going to do it again. By the time he gets to San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium on August 23, he will have already done 22 shows.
Huck Jam — which includes skateboarding, BMX bike jumping, freestyle motocross stunts and lots of loud rock and rap music — is now an independent show that uses outdoor venues. . . . “It was a huge thing, hauling all that equipment to arenas,” Hawk says. “The outdoor shows are more manageable.”
The man is obviously indefatigable. Be sure to watch the video at USA Today. And if you want to see the Huckjam at Qualcomm Stadium on August 23, 2008, click here for tickets.

Few things in life are more fun than rolling your balls on the beach. And at 28th Annual Vigilucci’s Bocce Ball World Championships on Saturday July 12, 2008 at Del Mar’s Dog Beach that exactly what 300 people are going to do.
What’s the Carlsbadistan hook? This year the money being raised at the event is going to the Carlsbad Boys & Girls Club.
“It’s such an awesome event, North County’s cleaner answer to the Over-the-Line tournament in San Diego,” said Pat Maldi, marketing director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. “It’s a party on the beach —- bocce ball with sand, food and fun.”
The event is sold out, but the next best thing to playing with your balls is watching someone else play with theirs. Play begins at 8:15 AM and complimentary parking (and a Shuttle) is available at the Del Mar Racetrack. For more information click here to email Pat Maldi, or call (760) 729-0207 x303.

One of the great things about having a private street is that you can close it whenever you want. That’s exactly what the residents of Carlsbadistan’s Nautical Drive did on Independence Day.
They didn’t close it for a parade. They closed it so they could use they could throw a small block party: get a jumper for the kids, pull the patio furniture out into the street, and have dinner with their friends and neighbors.
Sitting out in the middle of the street with a cool drink in our hand, surrounded by good company made us realize just how annoying traffic is on our streets, and how nice it is to close them down every once in a while just because.
It was a happy 4th of July, indeed. Click the jump for a couple more photos.

Aside from handful of extremely well prepared amateur pyrotechnicians in Carlsbadistan, we have no official city fireworks display. But that shouldn’t stop anyone from heading to the beach tonight to catch everyone else’s fireworks shows.
Here is a list of the star spangled fireworks displays we can see from the beach in Carlsbadistan (if the marine layer stays offshore).
- Carlsbadistan: Fireworks show whenever the Carlsbad Police Department is not looking.
- Legoland: Fireworks show at 8:30 pm
- Oceanside Pier: Fireworks show at 9 pm
- Camp Pendleton: Fireworks show at 9 pm
- Del Mar Fairgrounds: Fireworks show at 9 pm
- La Jolla Cove: Fireworks show at 9 pm

The Fourth of July is a big, big day in Carlsbadistan and what better way to shut it down than by driving out to the Eastern Front for some red hot and saucy jazz music as Ruby and The Red Hots rock Stagecoach Park at stop number three of the City of Carlsbad’s TGIF Jazz in the Park. 6 – 8 pm.
A crowd favorite for years, Ruby Presnell, “The First Class Sultry Lady of Blues,” has shared the stage with all the greats including Etta James, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, as well as the San Diego Symphony. And now she’s going to share her music with Carlsbadistan, again.

We mentioned the Cadillacs of Comedy a few weeks ago, but we had no idea how big they were getting. The letters on the marquee must be at least a foot tall.
You know what they say about comedians with big marquees. . . we’ll just let Don Friesen, Anthony Griffith, and Mark Anderson tell you next Friday or Saturday night at the Carlsbad Village Theatre, 2822 State St., Carlsbad. Tickets are $15. Call (760) 434-5922.

She was sippin’ water and suckin’ throat lozenges most of the set, but that didn’t keep blues diva Javina Magness and her band from rocking the crowd all the way to the outfield at Stagecoach Park last night, for concert two of Carlsbad’s TGIF Jazz in The Park 2008.
We didn’t catch the first bit of Magness’ show because, as usual when we venture that far into Carlsbad’s Eastern Front, we got lost. From the looks on the faces of the packed baseball field everyone was enjoying Javina’s efforts.
The new baseball diamond venue may lack a little of the flavor of the old location, but it sure makes it easy for all the picnickers. And that new jumbo-sized dance floor seemed to be extremely popular.
Follow the jump for all the photos.
