The New Village Arts Theatre is giving Carlsbad William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar absolutely free from August 9-18 at the theatre at 2787 State Street at 7 PM Thursdays and Fridays, at 3 and 7 PM Saturdays and at 2 PM on Sundays.
In past years, the production has taken place outdoors in one of Carlsbad’s parks. This summer, Shakespeare is staying inside so that the company can show off its new theater. . . “It allows us a greater intimacy,” said Fran Gercke, artistic director for the theater. “With ‘Julius Caesar,’ which deals with conspiracy and secrets, cloak and dagger, misdirection, and political espionage, it’s important that the audience see the little things.”
So far we’ve missed them all. Please don’t follow our lead. Go see it. We’ll remind you again, if you forget.

After the recent collapse of a Minneapolis bridge which has killed nine people (so far) everyone has become a little more interested in exactly what bridges need to be repaired. Well, according to 10 News, the I-5 bridge over Agua Hedionda lagoon in Carlsbad is currently on the California Department of Transportation bridge fix it list.
Caltrans has proposed repairs to the deck and substructure of the Interstate 5 crossing of the lagoon in Carlsbad, according to the list of 195 high-priority bridge projects. Caltrans Director Will Kempton did not specifically address the bridge in comments to reporters in a conference call.
The repairs will be specifically addressed real soon, right?

Carlsbad’s own NASCAR driver Boris Said (of the No Fear team) was in the process of sitting out Sunday’s Centurion Boats at the Glen race thanks to a qualifying “rain-out” at Watkins Glen International when Said reportedly ran into #21 car driver Bill Elliot in the garage.
“Hey man, you should be driving my car,” Elliott said to Said, who was locked out of Sunday’s Centurion Boats at the Glen when qualifying was rained out Friday. As he walked to his Busch car, Said smiled and responded, “Sure, no problem, I’ll drive” . . . Elliott marched into the Wood Brothers/JTG Racing hauler and asked team co-owners Eddie and Len Wood if they would allow him to give up his seat in the No. 21 Ford to Said.
Elliot believes Said will be able to lift the number 21 car up in the rankings if he has a strong finish.

An underground power line failed yesterday around noon and left 900 Carlsbadistanians with out power near Poinsettia Lane and Linden Terrace.
Power had been expected to be restored by around 4 p.m., officials said, but Saturday evening about 36 customers were still without power. Power was expected to be restored by midnight, the company’s Web site reported.

The whole Carlsbad strawberry field issue in the last elections in November was simply too confusing for any level headed resident to figure out. That said, the easiest way to explain it is that the “open space” people won with the passage of Prop. D. Now the new “Prop. D Citizens Liaison Committee” will be conducting “a communitywide assessment process.”
With the first meeting of a new citizens committee Friday morning, Carlsbad launched a six-month process to determine what the future might hold for the privately owned strawberry and flower-growing lands along Cannon Road. “I think we live in an age of very strong opinions based on very superficial knowledge,” said committee member Gary Hill as explanation of why he thought residents should be asked broad questions rather than simply asked what should be done with the strawberry fields.
Hopefully, they’ll build a new skatepark in there somewhere. If they do, then we’re all for it.

According to a story in the Coast News the California Coastal Commission has approved Poseidon Resources fifth application for its planned desalination plant in the lagoon next to the Encina Power Plant.
“This is precisely what we’ve been hoping to accomplish, to get to a point when we could get a hearing,” said Peter MacLaggan, senior vice president for Poseidon. “It’s an important milestone, but it’s just a procedural step. We need to focus on preparing for the hearing.”
The approval is not for the plant itself, but for an application to present a plan to the Coastal Commission in mid November 2007. In other words, Poseidon Resources has been given permission to ask permission.

If driving to Chargers games seems a daunting task this season, don’t worry: you can ride the bus to and from Qualcomm for just $12 for adults and $4 for kids under 12.
The bus leaves Westfield Shoppingtown Plaza Camino Real two hours before game time, the park-and-ride lot at I-5 and La Costa Avenue one hour and 40 minutes before game time.
Tomorrow’s game against the Seattle Seahawks starts at 5 PM. Why drive and drink when you can ride with the fans.
