California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (yeah, remember him?) was in Solana Beach yesterday kicking off plans for his $42 billion campaign to “rebuild the state’s aging infrastructure.” His first project? Adding diamond lanes to Interstate 5 all the way to Cannon Rd in Carlsbad.
Schwarzenegger said the $66 million project to extend car-pool lanes on Interstate 5 from Via de la Valle in the Del Mar area to Manchester Avenue in Encinitas. . . Getting under way this week, the two-mile-long car-pool project is expected to be completed by March 2010. The project is the first leg of a $1 billion effort that ultimately will extend diamond lanes north to Cannon Road in Carlsbad by the middle of next decade, transportation officials said.
Wow. When you think of all the cool public transportation ideas that could use $1 billion, it seems like a crime to spend it making an already gigantic freeway one lane wider. Talk about a lack of vision.

The Washington Post has a blog called The Trail that is “a daily diary of Campaign 2008.”
In today’s update they were listing all the money that Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani has been spending on what they are calling “posh hotels.” Guess who was near the top of the list? Our own La Costa Resort and Spa:
Whether it was $2,010 at the Greenbrier Hotel in West Virginia, $4,034 at La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., or $5,370 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, the former mayor found himself top-notch lodging.
Top-notch indeed. Wonder how much they charged him for valet parking?

According to a Denver Post Food Section blog, the Southern Sun brewpub in Boulder, Colorado is celebrating the Hop Harvest during the month of October and one of their featured beer samples is Pizza Port’s Hop Suey Double IPA:
It’s 9 percent alcohol, and it’s so hoppy it could strip paint. And I loved it. It carried plenty of citrus, but the emphasis hinged entirely on the powerful hops. I’d love to down one of these. But three in an evening? It might be too much hop.
Looks like the mountain hippies like it.

Looks like six kids at the Calavera Hills Middle School have come down with the chicken pox and officials have warned parents that their kids may have been exposed.
“We are working closely with school officials to identify children who may have been exposed,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer. “Parents should check with their physicians to make sure their children are inoculated against chicken pox and other preventable diseases,” she said.
It’s that itchy, scratchy, red-blotchy, high fever time of year. Hopefully, your kids have been vaccinated.

The owner of Legoland would like to create a separate attraction at the park centered around an aquarium the size of the “the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla,” according to plans filed with the city of Carlsbad.
The aquarium will be called the Sea Life Center and will be a separate attraction – with its own admission price – from the rest of the 128-acre Legoland amusement park. . . . Building plans for the aquarium indicate it is intended to be a two-story structure. The first floor is slated to include a freshwater stream, a children’s maze, a harbor animals area, a theater, a toddler water play zone and a classroom.
According to Legoland spokeswoman Julie Estrada The Sea Life Center will also house “a restaurant, a sea horse display area, a ray tank, and nature discovery area.” The city, of course, “expects to issue building permits within the next several weeks” because, well, that’s what the city’s planning department does.

Well, if the Carlsbad Lancers football team had to lose a game then it might as well have been to the Oceanside Pirates. Before tonight the Lancers hadn’t lost since September 2005 and all of Carlsbadistan can all take cold comfort in knowing that last night’s game in Oceanside was never even close.
The Pirate offense marched up and down the field at will, while Carlsbad’s offense couldn’t score a point and rarely made it’s first downs. The Lancers’ only touchdown was scored by an intercepting in the first half. Ouch. But streaks of any kind tend to play with people’s heads, so it’s probably good that this one is over and the Lancers can get back to basics. . . playing the quality football that we all know they are capable of.

We said it will be big news when the Carlsbad Lancer football team finally loses a game. And we hope there is no big news under this weekend’s friday night lights. Tonight the Lancer football team will be playing the Oside Pirates in Oceanside at 7 PM. Not following high school football at all we’d have to guess that this will be a pretty big game, especially when you consider that the Lancers have a 25 game winning streak rolling.
We’d go to the game ourselves if it weren’t for our long standing rule about not being in Oceanside after the sun goes down. Go Lancers. . . !

According to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times the Carlsbad City Council voted unanimously last month to give themselves a 10 percent raise in November of 2008.
Under state law, council members are allowed to raise their salaries 5 percent a year, and their last raises went into effect in 2006, said Julie Clark, the city’s human resource director, as she discussed why the 10 percent figure was picked. “Whatever small increase there is, is to me very worthwhile,” Mayor Bud Lewis said Wednesday. “Just preparing for a council meeting … takes the whole weekend.”
What this means is if they’d given themselves any larger of a raise it would have been illegal. Aside from all the perks of being a big power swinger in local politics City Council members really don’t make all that much. After their raise next year they’ll make $17k a year.
We’ve always wondered what would happen if a City Council was outrageously well compensated; paid so well that they would have the independence to make decisions that really were in the best, long-term interest of the community. But that would never work, would it?
