Thank God It’s Full: Jazz In The Park

by The Editors on March 27, 2008

Eccrowd-1

The annual Carlsbad TGIF Jazz in the Park series has gotten so popular that it is outgrowing its venues according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times. So event planners are going to change things up a bit.

The plans will be unveiled at a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Stagecoach Park, 3420 Camino de los Coches. . . . Under the city’s tentative plan, no concerts will be held at downtown’s Pine Avenue Park, because it isn’t big enough to hold thousands of people, Gordon said.

But it appears that some aren’t too happy about the changes. Especially news about moving the stage at Stagecoach Park. Or in our case, we’re not happy about not being able to walk to any of the TGIF events next year (which ruins half the fun in our opinion). Maybe Carlsbadistan will just have to start their own concert series.

A Fast American Enters Carlsbad 5000

by The Editors on March 26, 2008

Cbad5000

As if we needed one more reason to feel lazy on the morning of April 6, 2008. The San Diego Union-Tribune tells us that:

American mile record holder Alan Webb has entered the April 6 Carlsbad 5000, according to sources at Elite Racing, which puts on the 5K road race. “He’s definitely coming,” Webb’s agent, Ray Flynn, said yesterday. . . . Webb broke Steve Scott’s nearly 25-year-old record in the mile last July in Belgium, running four laps in 3 minutes, 46.91 seconds. Scott’s record was 3:47.69.

An American runner hasn’t won the Carlsbad 5000 since 2002. And when fast Americans enter, we guess that’s big news. Run, American, run.

Indy Fans Invade Legoland This Saturday

by The Editors on March 26, 2008

IndyfansThis Saturday at Legoland a 20,000 brick life-size model of Indiana Jones will be unveiled and on display for everyone to see on their way into the park. But, that’s not all. We’re not sure what it means, but here are the details:

Meet true fans of the Indiana Jones movie franchise as they dress like their favorite movie characters. They will also hand out IndyFans posters, give bull whip demonstrations, ask trivia questions, and award some great prizes including tickets to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on opening night, and return tickets to Legoland California.

We’re guessing this is a movie promotion tied into the all-new Land of Adventure, but it sounds fun nonetheless.

Top-Flite Never Lay Up Rap

by The Editors on March 26, 2008

Top-Flite (Callaway’s golf ball brand) has had some sales trouble, but the Carlsbad company is not down and out. While rap commercials have almost unilaterally sucked, this one is pretty damn funny. And it was all filmed in Carlsbadistan. Notice anything familiar?

School Of Golf Hosts Open House

by The Editors on March 26, 2008

Sdga

On Sunday April 5, 2008 the San Diego Golf Academy which they claim is the “oldest and largest golf college in the world” (and we won’t argue because we don’t golf) is throwing an open house to celebrate the opening of their new campus.

The onsite radio broadcast by 101 KGB-FM will feature the classic rock station’s on-air personality Bromo, who is widely known for the bizarre acts he performs during broadcasts typically due to losing bets on rounds of golf with co-workers. The open house will also include facility tours, prize giveaways, food and refreshments. . . . “We are very excited to have Bromo attending this event. He is an entertaining disc jockey and an avid golfer who always has a good time on the course, win or lose,” says Richard Iorio, SDDGA’s San Diego campus director. “SDGA teaches many concepts surrounding the game and business of golf, and among the more important lessons is simply to enjoy the game.”

The party runs from 11 AM to 5 PM at 1950 Camino Vida Roble. While we can’t really figure out a reason why we’d want to go, we’re sure golfers will be able to figure something out. They’re so good at rationalizing pointless exercises.

. . . And The Winner Is Dana Ducommun

by The Editors on March 25, 2008

Mw-Dana Ducommun SmallSadly, we were unable to attend the 54th Annual Miss Carlsbad Pageant the evening of March 22, 2008. If we had we would have seen Dana Ducommun grab the crown, the roses, and $2,000 in cash from the Carlsbad Lions Club.

First runner-up in the Miss Carlsbad contest was Allison Pechter; second runner-up was Erin Langford; third runner-up Alison Mart; Miss Photogenic was Dana Ducommun; and Miss Congeniality was Juliette Orozco.

Congratulations, Dana, and all the girls who put in the hard work to keep the pageant alive.

Shaun White Wins Slope and Pipe At US Open

by The Editors on March 23, 2008

08Uso MhpCarlsbadistan’s favorite action sports superstar Shaun White won his third consecutive US Open of Snowboarding halfpipe today at Stratton Mountain, Vermont.

Coming off a win at Friday’s Slopestyle, the reigning US Open Halfpipe Champion would once again destroy the competition and end his day with a victory lap. Shaun’s winning run consisted of a first-hit frontside 10 stale to cab 10 into his signature frontside 5 stale, McTwist, frontside 9 with a backside 9 ender—all HUGE and flawless.

The kid is good. It’s that simple.

Taylor-Made Sues Over Who Has Biggest Stick

by The Editors on March 21, 2008

End 080312According to BrandWeek, Carlsbad-based company TaylorMade is suing competitor Nickent over ads that the company has been running on TV and in print that “lead consumers to believe that its 4DX driver is the No. 1 driver model on the PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour.”

“Occasionally fringe companies in the industry try to encroach on our territory as the No. 1 driver in golf by misrepresenting the facts,” said Bob Maggiore, TMaG’s vp-marketing. “Being the No. 1 driver model at a Nationwide Tour event does not equate to being the No. 1 driver on tour. TaylorMade has been the No. 1 driver brand on the PGA Tour, as well as the Nationwide Tour, since 2001. That more than qualifies us to question Nickent’s logic and judgment in making claims that are misleading at best, and blatantly false at worst.”

See what tough times in the golf industry lead to? Semantics battles.

New Miss Carlsbad Crowned Tomorrow Night

by The Editors on March 21, 2008

Misscourt-SmallThanks to the Carlsbad Lions Club. the 54 year Miss Carlsbad tradition of scantily clad, pretty young things parading around on stage is alive and well.

Tomorrow night, March 22, 2008 at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center at 3557 Lancer Way, we’ll see the girls competing in “sportswear” and “evening gown.” Swimwear and talent competitions are gone, but as we said before, these teen and miss contestants are going to do their best for the judges, because thousands of dollars in cash “scholarships” are on the line.
