School Board OKs High School EIR

by The Editors on February 12, 2009

There was some push back from people who think Carlsbadistan’s next high school “will bring excessive noise, traffic and pollution to nearby Calavera Creek and its surrounding wetlands,” but that didn’t stop the board from voting unanimously to approve the plan, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Much of the controversy focused on plans for a lighted sports field and track, which at one point was being designed to accommodate 4,000 spectators. The environmental report approved last night calls for seating for 3,000, but trustees said they want administrators to lower that number. . . . The high school is expected to enroll about 1,500 students. Carlsbad Unified School District is designing the school so it can expand to house up to 2,400 students.

Just get ‘er done, please. Our kids are getting older by the day.

Blackburn On Way Back To The Force

by The Editors on February 12, 2009

It may be only as a volunteer, but Carlsbadistan City Councilman Keith Blackburn is reportedly excited about getting to do some police work after the City Council voted to change to rules and allow it, according to a story in the North County Times.

The City Council unanimously agreed Tuesday to amend a city ordinance to allow the service. The city already allows its council members to be volunteer firefighters. . . . The amendment, which will require a second council vote, is expected to go into effect next month. It will allow newly elected Councilman Keith Blackburn, a former Carlsbad police officer, to continue participating in Police Department activities as a volunteer. That’s something he’s been seeking since his election.

It does create some interesting conflict of interest possibilities when it comes to all kinds of City Council decisions, but it looks like they’re okay with that.

City Council Cuts Own Pay

by The Editors on February 11, 2009

The Carlsbadistan City Council last night voted to give themselves a 5 percent pay cut to set a good example, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The council decided a couple weeks ago that because of current economic conditions we should take a reduction in salary,” Carlsbad Mayor Bud Lewis said in introducing the measure. “We felt it was clearly proper that we set the tone.” . . . Carlsbad cut $5 million from its $113 million operating budget last month by slashing overtime, reducing some services and implementing a hiring freeze. The city has not laid off any employees, as some other cities have done.

The council members will now make only $1,389 a month. If they really wanted to keep up with the economic times they would have laid themselves off.

Bressi Ranchers vs. TERI, Inc.

by The Editors on February 11, 2009

Iszx88Wawbqn4ZThe discussion over the Bressi Ranch home for autistic men continued last night at the Carlsbad City Council meeting according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune. A group of Bressi Ranch homeowners chided the City of Carlsbad for giving a $1 million grant to TERI, Inc. to buy a home in the upscale community.

The group, called The Concerned Homeowners, said it had no complaint with the four to six autistic adults who will live in the group home; the group was targeting the city’s process for awarding the grant. . . . It also said the nonprofit that is buying the home, the TERI Group, misrepresented itself in its grant application. . . . “This is not about discrimination. This not about us fighting the Fair Housing Act,” Dana Matas, a member of the group, told the council. . . . The group gave a presentation to the City Council titled, “Affordable Housing or Resort-Style Living,” in which it accused the city of wasting taxpayer funds.

The City Council, not surprisingly, stood by its decision.

Molly Bee Muncy Dies

by The Editors on February 11, 2009

44993974Carlsbad lost a country singer on Saturday February 7, 2009 when Molly Bee Muncy died due to “complications related to a stroke at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside,” according to a story in the Los Angeles Times. She was 69.

At 10, she sang “Lovesick Blues” for country singer Rex Allen and soon debuted on his radio show. Within two years, she was a regular on “Hometown Jamboree,” a Los Angeles-based show run by Cliffie Stone, who helped popularize country music in California. . . . First broadcast on radio, “Jamboree” aired on KTLA-TV Channel 5 from the late 1940s to 1960. The show gave a big break to many young singers, including Tommy Sands, who became a teen idol and dated Bee in the 1950s. . . . “She had a great voice and a wonderful stage personality,” Sands told The Times on Monday. “She was a sweet person, just terrific.”

A celebration of Bee’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at El Camino Memorial Chapel, 340 Melrose Ave., Encinitas.

Naomi Crespo Gets No Rose

by The Editors on February 11, 2009

745342919 MWe don’t mean to be on a “reality TV” tip, but it seems like Carlsbadistan is showing up all over the place. On Sunday night Carlsbadistan’s bachelorette Naomi Crespo finally got the boot from ABC’s The Bachelor.

“My date with Naomi was a real roller-coaster ride… almost literally,” Mesnick wrote in a blog entry following ABC’s Monday night broadcast of The Bachelor, which ended with his elimination of Naomi, a 24-year-old flight attendant from Carlsbad, CA. . . . “[Naomi] and I are very similar in so many ways,” Mesnick explained. “I made my decision because I realized in my heart that Naomi has huge wings and she needs to fly and experience more in the world. She is a great girl and I know I made the right decision for all of us.”

We agree. And we’re going to cut it with the reality TV for now.

Harlem Globetrotter Visits Legoland

by The Editors on February 6, 2009

Image001-1Paying visitors at Legoland today (February 6, 2009) got an extra bonus as Herb “Moo Moo” Evans of the world famous Harlem Globetrotters put on a one-man basketball show today.

Evans captivated a large audience of Park guests with his basketball wizardry and the hilarious antics that have made the Harlem Globetrotters a family favorite for generations. . . . “The best part of being a Harlem Globetrotter is the kids’ smiles,” said Evans. “Their faces just light up when I do what I do.”

One of the biggest smiles Evans got today was from 4-year-old Carlsbadistan resident Liam Cunnings. Those who missed Evans at Legoland can see the entire Globetrotters team take on the losing team in basketball (The Washington Generals) at the Sports Arena on February 13 and 15, 2009.
