Sunday Morning Village Faire Stabbing

by The Editors on April 12, 2011

A 37-year-old man was reportedly stabbed multiple times during an attack in the courtyard of the Village Faire near The Coyote Bar before 1 AM on Sunday, April 9, 2011, according to a story in the San Diego Union Tribune. Police were notified by Tri-City Hospital after the man came in for treatment.

Once officers arrived, he told them two men had stabbed him in the courtyard of The Coyote, a bar on Carlsbad Village Road near Carlsbad Boulevard. The man did not tell police what prompted the attack, the spokesman said. . . Police later found blood about 500 feet away outside the Daily News Cafe on Carlsbad Boulevard. It was unclear if those bloodstains were connected to the stabbing, the spokesman said.

The unnamed victim described the assailants as two large white men. More blood on the streets of Carlsbad.

New Village Arts Ensemble Project

by The Editors on April 11, 2011

Nva Esemble

Carlsbadistan’s New Village Arts Theatre has decided to go “ensemble” for their 11th season. What that means is that all six of the theater’s productions will be created entirely by the same 14 actors, directors, designers and stage managers.

The Ensemble Project gives New Village Arts the opportunity to fully explore the group mind at work in a theatrical setting. The collaboration of this group will create a stronger art form than an individual alone and allow New Village Arts to continue its Ensemble experience with a better understanding of the potential of concentrated Ensemble work.

The Riehl World: Needy Homeowners?

by Richard J. Riehl on April 7, 2011

ToolsCarlsbad city officials can’t understand why more low-income homeowners haven’t applied for federal funds earmarked for minor home repairs, from clearing clogged drains to installing assistive devices for seniors and disabled persons.

The city pays $8,500 each year to Community HousingWorks, a San Diego non-profit, to administer the program. In the last three years, only four households have received funding.

At the city council’s March 22 meeting, Councilmember Farrah Douglas asked Debbie Fountain, director of housing and neighborhood services, to explain how the program has been marketed. Fountain told of postings on the city and HousingWorks websites, direct mailers to the barrio neighborhood, and articles and advertisements in community publications. She singled out word-of-mouth as “pretty successful.” Maybe that explains how the two homeowners receiving help last year learned of the program. [click to continue…]
