Next week, the City of Carlsbadistan will begin work on a project that will see a portion of La Costa Avenue shrink from two lanes to one.

The city will reduce La Costa Avenue to one lane westbound from Romeria Street through Fairway Lane by converting one of the vehicle lanes into a bike lane. Work is expected to begin on July 18 and be completed by July 21. . . The lane reduction will improve driver visibility from the residential driveways located between Romeria Street and Fairway Lane. The new lane configuration will match the existing lane striping on La Costa Avenue east of Romeria Street where a lane reduction has already been implemented.

The City of Carlsbad will begin work next week to change the number of lanes on a portion of La Costa Avenue from two to one, as part a short-term effort to improve safety on the busy roadway.

The city will reduce La Costa Avenue to one lane westbound from Romeria Street through Fairway Lane by converting one of the vehicle lanes into a bike lane. Work is expected to begin on July 18 and be completed by July 21.

Although most of the work will take place in the westbound lanes, traffic going both directions will likely experience delays. The work hours for this project are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

City staff reminds the public to drive carefully during the striping project and take alternate routes when possible. No parking signs will be posted on westbound side of the project area.

“Keeping our streets safe is a priority in Carlsbad,” said City of Carlsbad Traffic Engineering Superintendent John Maashoff. “We appreciate the public’s patience during this project.”

The striping plan is considered a short-term solution to improving safety on La Costa Avenue. The city recently completed a series of workshops and a public survey to identify a long-term solution. City staff will present this long term plan to the City Council later this summer.

The lane reduction will improve driver visibility from the residential driveways located between Romeria Street and Fairway Lane. The new lane configuration will match the existing lane striping on La Costa Avenue east of Romeria Street where a lane reduction has already been implemented.
