Friends Of The Library Summer Book Sale

by The Editors on July 25, 2011

On August 6-7, 2011 the Friend of the Carlsbad Library will be hosting a sale of books that have been donated to the library.

In addition to a huge variety of almost-new books at used-book prices, this mid-summer event will feature collector comic books, vintage newspapers and magazines, signed volumes, leather-bound editions, games, puzzles and much more. . . As always, there will be hundreds of coffee-table books and other fine volumes at a fraction of retail price. They will include books on art, nature, photography and history, as well as cookbooks, craft books, children’s books and hardback copies of recent best-sellers.

The Super Summer Sale is open from 9 AM to 4 PM Saturday, August 6, and 1 to 3 PM on Sunday, Aug. 7. On Sunday, everything will be half price. It’s a perfect time for us to go back and buy some of the books we mistakenly donated to the library the last time we cleaned out our garage. CARLSBAD – The Friends of the Carlsbad Library are pulling out all the stops and gathering their best selection of gently used books in preparation for their Super Summer Sale.

In addition to a huge variety of almost-new books at used-book prices, this mid-summer event will feature collector comic books, vintage newspapers and magazines, signed volumes, leather-bound editions, games, puzzles and much more.

The sale will be Aug. 6-7 in the Gowland Meeting Room of the Dove Library, 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive. It will offer hundreds of outstanding volumes that have been culled from donations to the Friends of the Library’s used book store throughout the year.

As always, there will be hundreds of coffee-table books and other fine volumes at a fraction of retail price. They will include books on art, nature, photography and history, as well as cookbooks, craft books, children’s books and hardback copies of recent best-sellers.

Taffy Cannon, president of the Friends of the Library, urges people to come early in order to take advantage of the best selection. Every time the Friends hold a book sale, Cannon said, people are lined up outside before the doors open.

Sale hours for the Super Summer Sale are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, and 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7. The already-low sticker prices will be slashed on Sunday, when everything will go for half price.

Proceeds from the event go toward the purchase of library books and materials and help fund Carlsbad City Library programs. These include the Summer Reading Program, which serves thousands of children of all ages from throughout North County, and Carlsbad Reads Together, the annual community-wide reading event, which takes place each April.

In addition to hosting a number of large book sales throughout the year, the Friends volunteers staff the bookstore at the Dove Library. They also offer used books and magazines for sale in the mini-store at the Georgina Cole Library, 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive.

People can donate books and magazines they no longer need by bringing them to the check-out desk of either library or by placing them in the donation bin near the Dove Library’s service entrance on the south side of the building.

Some donated items go into the library’s collection, while the rest are sold by the Friends, who raise more than $100,000 a year to help support the library. Revenue from the Friends’ book sales is becoming even more critical, with libraries facing potential budget cuts as California looks for ways to trim its budget.
