State Beach Open & Sewage Free

by The Editors on October 10, 2010

Good news. Thanks to the Encina Wastewater Authority’s amazing sucking skills none of the sewage that spilled when when a pipeline was damaged actually reached the beach, according to a news release.

After review of flow monitoring data, the Encina Wastewater Authority (EWA) has estimated that 252,000 gallons of sewage reached the storm drain as a result from the pipeline failure. Recovery efforts included suctioning 388,800 gallons of water from the storm drain channel and 166,400 gallons from the Encinas Creek. Based on the recovered volumes and ocean monitoring results, it is not believed that any of the spilled sewage reached the Pacific Ocean.

This may be the one time when totally sucking is a great thing. Follow the jump for more info.
Carlsbad, CA — Signs warning of possible contaimination were removed from the beach near the Encinas Creek outlet, which had been posted following Thursday’s sewage spill. Samples collected on Friday andSaturday confirmed the water is safe for recreational use.

Construction activities are underway to replace the damaged pipeline, which caused the spill event. Due to the complexities of the project, repairs are not expected to be complete before October 18, 2010.

Sewage service is not affected. however, EWA is asking resident of Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Vista to continue to reduce indoor water usage. This will minimize the volume of wastewater that must be diverted and help the plant comply with its ocean discharge permit.

For the duration of construction, Avenida Encinas will remain closed in front of the treatment plant. Avienda Encinas is accessible to the north and sourth via Palomar Airport Road and Poinsettia Lane. The Coaster station may be accessed form Poinsettia Lane.
