We’ve just returned from our first Carlsbad City Council Candidates Forum held this morning at 9 AM in the club house of The Lakeshore Garden’s Mobile Home Park on the southwest corner of Poinsettia and Avenida Encinas.
As we mentioned on our Twitter feed our first reaction was horror. But there is more to it than that. First off, it is amazing to us that the candidates actually show up for these meetings. There were maybe 55 people in the audience (most well over 60 years old) and most were residents of the Lakeshore gardens.

Thesa Graves, 19, of Carlsbad was killed and three others were injured after she ran a red light and “collided with a newspaper delivery truck” at around 10 PM Friday October 10, 2008 at the corner of Carlsbad Village Drive and El Camino Real, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The teen was taken to a hospital, where she later died. Three passengers were hospitalized with unknown injuries. . . . Firefighters had to use rescue equipment to free the four occupants of the Toyota Corolla from the wreckage.

A 16-year-old skateboarder who was towing along beside his friend’s car on Garfield was run over and injured today at approximately 5:45 pm. Carlsbad Fire and Police responded to the accident and closed Garfield in both directions from Sycamore to Walnut.
“He was hanging on to the side a friends car and was just about to let go when he fell,” said one witness.
The boy was conscious and appeared to be speaking with the ambulance crew while he was being loaded on to the backboard.
Another bystander reported that he had a serious gash on the back of his head, but didn’t seem to have any other major injuries. “He is okay, he is okay,” she kept saying into her cellphone.

Pilgrim United Church of Christ pastor Madison Shockley, a “vocal proponent of the law that discourages political endorsements from the pulpit,” appeared on National Public Radio to speak on out against 33 pastors from around the country who have formed a group called The Pulpit Initiative to fight the law prohibiting tax-exempt organizations (like Churches) from endorsing political candidates.

We’ll all have another chance to see the candidates for Carlsbad City Council together in one spot as The Lakeshore Gardens Association hosts a Candidate Forum at 9 am Saturday, October 11, 2008 at Clubhouse One located at 7255 San Luis St.
There’s nothing like a mobile home crowd to ask all the tough questions.

Nothing really new in theses statements, however after reading them all we’re feeling even better about Evan Rodgers and her plans for Carlsbad.

Carlsbadistan’s Stacey Ross says she didn’t even know what a blog was when she started SanDiegoBargainMama.com.
Now, according to a story in Today’s Local News, she says her shopping savings tips for mothers site gets visited by 11,000 people per month.
The site highlights regional deals and resources for products, services and San Diego family-friendly events that are easy on the pocketbook. She sends three e-mail campaigns out each month to let subscribers know what’s on sale and writes a daily blog about her experiences in tracking down deals.
For moms searching for bargains in and around North County, San Diego Bargain Mama is worth checking out. . . especially the blog, however, it’s good to remember that much of the content is “sponsored” meaning it is paid advertising and not simply Stacey’s opinion.

At a candidates forum on Monday Carlsbad City Council candidate Glenn Bernard claimed that Norine Sigafoose told him that credit cards were being “wildly abused by city personnel” and that she resigned in February 2007 because she “feared a brewing credit-card scandal,” according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
“That’s just ludicrous. I never said it and I didn’t think it,” Sigafoose said. “There has never to my knowledge been any hint of credit-card fraud.
Bernard said he would take a lie-detector test, but it appears no one has taken him up on it. This race continues to get more and more interesting by the day.
