The 10-time National Champion Carlsbad High School Varsity Lancer Dancers invite you to their annual dance showcase running Thursday, December 10 through Saturday December 12, 2015 at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center on the campus of Carlsbad High School.
The Lancer Dancers will perform a variety of routines in jazz, hip hop, pom, lyrical and other genres that they have been working on this school year. With so many different dance and music styles, this year’s Showcase offers something for everyone. Showcase tickets are on sale now at www.lancerdancers.com and are $15.

The City of Carlsbad is asking for input concerning what exactly they should do to improve the coastal zone from the Warm Water jetties south to Mansano Drive.
“We have a lot of opportunities along our coastline to improve safety, especially for bicyclists and pedestrians, ease traffic flow and create a better experience overall,” said Assistant City Manager Gary Barberio, who is overseeing a variety of coastal improvements in Carlsbad. “Before we make any changes, we want to make sure we have considered the input of everyone who uses the area.”

For the past 11 years Boar’s Crossing owner Ralph Burnette has held a Fish Fry Fundraiser in August to help raise money for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. Over the years he has donated more than $100,000 to the clubs.
The event brings the community together on a summer afternoon to support the Club while enjoying excellent fish tacos. Raising at least $10,000 annually, much of the donation comes straight from Ralph’s coffers – with more than $100,000 being donated to the Club over the years. . . “What I enjoy most is taking the money to the Club staff, and going on a shopping spree with them,” said Burnette. “They make a list, and get items that are needed but not in their budget. This year’s items included a flat screen in the lobby used for announcements, plenty of sports equipment, and even a computer.”

The City of Carlsbad’s William D. Cannon Art Gallery presents the 2015 Cannon Art Gallery Invitational, an exhibition featuring the work of Dan Adams, David Hewitt, Michelle Montjoy, Leslie Nemour and Peggy Wiedemann.
The biannual Cannon Invitational provides an opportunity to showcase a select few of the artists from the most recent Cannon Juried Biennial and present their work in greater depth. The exhibition opens Nov. 22, 2015 and continues through Jan. 31, 2016 at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery in the Carlsbad City Library complex, located at 1775 Dove Lane. Admission is free. Caruso Affiliated’s plans to sneak their lagoon mall plans past the citizens of Carlsbad (and environmental checks and balances) are over for the time being, according to a news release from the City of Carlsbad.
The County of San Diego Registrar of Voters has verified that a referendum to overturn the City Council’s Aug. 25 decision to approve The Agua Hedionda South Shore Specific Plan has the required number of signatures to move forward to the next step in the process.
So what is the next step? Well, the City Council has two options — they can either repeal the ordinance they passed on August 25, 2015 (which would be the cheapest way to go) or they can put the matter up for vote at either a regular election or a “special election.” It will be interesting to see which way they go as they claim a “special election” could cost the City of Carlsbad up to $550,000. Just the other day we noticed the modern townhomes that seemed to have sprouted up overnight at the North end of State Street in the village of Carlsbad and they look really nice. The 47-unit development, called Seagrove, is the most recent work of national homebuilding giant Taylor Morrison.

The pediatric dentists at Great Smiles (with locations in Carlsbad and Solana Beach, California) are working to keep your kids’ smiles great by offering to buy back their Halloween candy at $1 a pound. And the 10 school classes that bring in the most candy will each get a pizza party.
To prevent rampant cavities and ease the blow of forfeiting some Halloween treats, the folks at Great Smiles are hosting a Halloween candy buyback where they are paying North County kids $1 for each pound of candy they bring in. Continuing their commitment to the community and its children, when kids drop off their candy they can simply say what school and teacher they have to be entered into a North Country-wide competition. When it’s all said and done, the 10 classes that bring in the most candy win a pizza party while the school with the most candy donated on its behalf will win a $500 donation. Anyone under 18 can donate candy, with a maximum of 5lbs per person. They don’t have to be Great Smiles patients or even say what school/class they attend (unless they it to count towards the contest). That’s it. Less candy consumed equals less cavities and more healthy, great smiles in the community.

Skyler and Stormy Wallace, two sisters representing Aviara Oaks Middle School, participated in the Mt. SAC Cross Country invitational, in Walnut, California, and both finished first in their divisions.
A record 25,000 participants competed over Mt. SAC’s famed three mile cross country course. Included in those 25,000 runners were two sisters representing Aviara Oaks Middle School – Skyler and Stormy Wallace. Both girls placed first in the two mile event – Skyler in the 8th grade division and Stormy in the 6th grade division! Races start every 8 minutes or less, and all results are shared on a live webcast. The course has changed little over the years, making it one of the few courses where different generations can compare times.

On November 7 and 18, 2015 the City of Carlsbad will be hosting two Epic Teen Nights. On Saturday, November 7, it’s Movie In The Park at Pine Avenue Community Park. The film? J-Law in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1. But that’s just the beginning.
On Wednesday, Nov. 18, the city will host a special VIP advance screening of the new movie The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2, before the film is released to the general public. Tickets are available now for $20 through Nov. 17 while supplies last. The movie will be shown at Regal Carlsbad 12 at the Westfield Carlsbad mall. Teens can check in at 5 p.m. and movie will begin at 6 p.m. Chaperones will be on hand to supervise and teens will be not allowed to leave the designated theater. After the movie is over, participants can be picked up outside the theater. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Movie is rated PG-13 and middle or high school ID is required.
