The Carlsbad High School Lancer Dancers returned from the 2015 Universal Dance Association’s (UDA) National Championships with 4th place in Jazz and 5th place in hip-hop out of more than 100 team competing January 31 – February 1, 2015. This was the third consecutive year that the Lancer Dancers placed among the top five teams in the nation in both Hip Hop and Jazz.
“We are so proud of the results our girls achieved at Nationals,” said Lancer Dancers Booster Club President, Michelle Ginn. “The countless hours of practice and preparation leading up to Nationals paid off, as the team finished in the top five in both Hip Hop and Jazz categories. It’s quite an achievement to consistently finish at or near the top, as the levels of talent and competition get tougher each year. The team has a long tradition of success. The Lancer Dancers have earned 14 National Titles in jazz and hip-hop.
And no, we’re not talking about marine mammals who’ve had a little too much to drink. We’re talking smoother, nicer roads in and around the City.
Every year the City of Carlsbad Public Works Department evaluates the streets to make sure they are well maintained. . . “Streets are selected based on their condition, and pavement management software helps us determine which streets are due for resurfacing,” said Jonathan Schauble, an associate engineer in the City of Carlsbad Public Works Department who oversees pavement management. “Regular maintenance is what keeps Carlsbad’s streets in good condition.”

The solar panels placed at the Alga Norte Park will power most of the park’s electrical needs rolling forward while at the same time providing shade in the park’s hot parking lots.
The 720 solar panels, which cover two rows of Alga Norte’s parking lot and provide shade for park visitors, are expected to generate about 360,000 kilowatt-hours of energy a year, which is enough to power about 55 average San Diego homes. It also will cut carbon dioxide output by approximately 6,838 tons over a 25-year period, which is the equivalent of cutting the emissions of automobiles driving 15 million miles. . . “This system will give us the ability to watch in real time our energy consumption compared to our production,” said City of Carlsbad Civic Projects Manager Patrick McGarry. “That will give us an opportunity to see how much energy the panels are producing and when we’re spiking electric power, allowing us to make decisions to reduce consumption.”
According to the City the panels, which cost $720,000, will pay for themselves in 11 years and begin creating a $66,000 a year savings in year 12. For the official word from the City of Carlsbad, please follow the jump. [click to continue…]

We’ve been biking and walking Carlsbadistan for a while now, but we’re glad to see the City of Carlsbad getting behind the program as well with the new Bike & Walk Carlsbad Project. The project is. . .
. . . a campaign to promote walking and biking in Carlsbad, just in time for those seeking fitness and lifestyle changes in the new year. The 12-month effort, funded with a grant by the San Diego Association of Governments, will encourage more walking and biking throughout the city, with a special emphasis on the Village area. . . City of Carlsbad Associate Planner Pam Drew said Carlsbad is a perfect place for a campaign like Walk + Bike. . . “With new bike racks, bike lanes and lighting, it is easier than ever to walk and bike in Carlsbad Village,” said Drew, who is overseeing the campaign for the city. “Walk + Bike fits right in with the community’s values around healthy lifestyles, connectivity, sustainability and economic vitality.”
And if this works well, maybe the City can close a few Carlsbad Village streets to automobile traffic entirely. . . guess we can dream, huh? For the official word from the City and The San Diego Association of Governments, please follow the jump. [click to continue…]
