Previews for the New Village Arts Theatre’s production of Shakespeare’s Comedy Of Errors kicked off last night (February 8, 2012) and continue through Friday night, February 10, 2012.
The Ensemble is at it again, this time tackling Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors. Director Justin Lang and the creative team behind Comedy have a seriously funny take on this uproarious farce that’s all about mistaken identity. We have relocated Shakespeare’s most slapstick comedy to – where else? A 1950’s television studio in Hollywood. . . Comedy of Errors is kind of like “Wife-Swap”… but by accident… and with husbands… mixed in with I Love Lucy and Dick Van Dyke. It’s an evening of hilarious fun, done in a style that only the NVA Ensemble could pull off.

At the National Dance Team Chamionships at Orlando, Florida’s Walt Disney World Resort on February 4-5, 2012 the Carlsbad High School Lancer Dancers varsity dance team took first place in the Varsity Hip Hop competition to win their 9th National title.
“After the team danced at finals, I was thrilled! They came out with such intensity and left it all on the dance floor!” said Laura. Team captain, Camille Posard, states, “We were fighting hard to defend our Championship Title and the competition was extremely tough. All those hours of practice, rehearsals, and sacrifices culminated minutes before the Finals. During our pep-talk we all had tears in our eyes and a roaring fire lit inside.”

Wouldn’t it be nice if grocery stores and gas stations would sign pledges to stop taxing us with higher prices until they cut their business expenses an equal amount? They could protect their profits by eliminating waste, fraud and abuse in their operations. We customers could help them find the waste to prove they don’t have a revenue problem, they have a spending problem.
Sound familiar? That’s the thinking behind a local political activist group that’s asking state office holders and candidates to sign its Promise to California Taxpayers pledge. Signers must promise to vote against all tax increases, amendments to Proposition 13 and increased taxpayer contributions to public employee pension plans.
I was disappointed to learn that Carlsbad City Council member and candidate for the 76th District seat in the California Assembly, Farrah Douglas, was one of the first five signers.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad have named their Youth of the Year and Finalists and the winner is Gerald Bell.
Currently a junior at Carlsbad High School, Gerald became a member at the Village Branch six years ago. He immediately became involved in all the activities that were offered. He lives the adage “good citizenship is doing good when nobody is looking,” and he’s very involved with Keystone Club, a service/leadership program. With over 350 community service hours in the last year, Gerald is all about helping others. “I hope to become a psychiatrist and help people with mental disabilities,” says Gerald. “The Boys & Girls Club is an important part of my life, and will always be that way. It’s a place for fun, adventures, happiness, security, and like a second family.”
Bell and the three other finalists, Keli Moriarty-Alkire, Marina Rodriguez, and Mara Waynick, were honored at a “super star dinner” held February 1, 2012 at the Carlsbad Village branch. Bell was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. For more of the official details, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Christine Jelinek, the 17-year-old Carlsbad resident who reportedly disappeared early on the morning of January 4, 2012 has, according to a post on the Please Help Find Christine Facebook page, been found. Her parent writes:
MY DAUGHTER HAS BEEN FOUND! She is safe! Got a call from a Sherrif Deputy who recognized her from one of the many flyers WE had put up. He called me, and I rushed over. I’ve seen her, held her, talked to her. Now its just a matter of PD ‘debriefing ‘ her, make sure she’s ok, no laws broken. THANKS ALL OF YOU! Details to come. I won’t be able to answer my phone, but thanks ALL of you… Each and every one! YOU’VE ALL BEEN AMAZING!!
We’re always glad when a runaway teen comes home and we hope everything turns out well.

On Saturday, January 28, 2012 the City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department will present Teen Scene, a talent show from 4 to 9 PM at the Calavera Hills Community Center.
The event features a “Battle of the Bands” judged by local music industry experts, a film festival with 5-minute movie shorts, a dance room with a D.J. featuring the Dance Unlimited dancers,” Gametruck, as well as an art café and game room. . . “All the music, films and art showcased at Teen Scene are created by local teens between the ages of 13 and 19. The event fosters teen expression in a safe and fun environment,” said Rachael Shay, special events supervisor for the city. “Past winners of the ‘Battle of the Bands’ have gone on to open for major rock acts, play legendary venues and get airplay on local commercial radio stations, so it’s a pretty big deal, and a thrill to see the bands’ hard work pay off.”

As they plan for next year’s budget cuts, Carlsbad school officials are confronted with options reminiscent of Hobson’s and Sophie’s choices. Thomas Hobson was the 16th Century English livery stable owner who advertised the availability of 40 horses but restricted choice to the one nearest the stable door—a take it or leave it option. Sophie Zawistowski was the mother in William Styron’s novel who is forced to choose which of her two children to save from being put to death by the Nazis.
Closing schools because of budget cuts embodies the same kind of no-win solutions.
Preparing for an expected $8 million budget shortfall next year, school officials are considering the closure of two schools that are substantially more costly to operate per pupil than other district schools because of their low enrollments. Abandoning Buena Vista Elementary and Carlsbad Village Academy would save the district an estimated $1 million. [click to continue…]

Carlsbad Police are hoping the public can help them find missing 17-year-old Christine Jelinek. Police believe Jelinek (pictured above), who disappeared early the morning of January 4, 2012, visited with a white adult male 45-50 years old on January 3, 2012 at Mariah’s Restaurant in Vista. The man (above right), whom she may have communicated with over the Internet, is described as:
. . . a white male adult, 45-50 years old, about 5’11”, weighing about 160 lbs, unknown eye color, and hair described as short and lighter on the bottom and dark on the top, and also described as “peppered”. At the sighting, he was wearing jeans, and a blue or gray button down shirt. . . The male is unknown to Christine’s parents, her associates and friends.
After meeting at Mariah’s, the man drove Christine to her home. Early the next morning Christine left her home and has not been seen or made contact with her family since. Jelinek is a white female 5’9” tall, about 150 lbs., with shoulder length dark brown hair and brown eyes. She reportedly left home with two pairs of jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt (which she may be wearing).

Until last summer the residents of Rancho Carlsbad Estates had a winning record when it came to their ping pong tournaments against the Carlsbad Boys & Girls Club players. Then this summer, the Club players finally won the tournament. Now, Rancho Carlsbad has been good enough to donate a brand new ping pong table to the new Bressi Boys & Girls club.
The interaction between seniors and youngsters is a perfect match,” said Jim Salvia, Bressi Unit Director. “Many of our kids don’t have grandparents readily available to them. The intergenerational activities are beneficial to both groups; everyone has a blast!”
