Carlsbad High School TV Working Golden Hall

by The Editors on November 2, 2010

Chtv Golden

Students from Carlsbad High School TV are at San Diego’s election headquarters Golden Hall tonight working on their special Election Show and getting a first hand look at the democratic process in action. According to a story on the Voice of San Diego CHSTV had the largest presence in the room.

Its production and reporting team was some 40 strong, and most of them fanned out across the swarming election night headquarters, maneuvering with cameras and microphones through the colorful masses that gathered to watch returns. . . What media organization can afford to send 40 people to a single event, you ask? . . . That would be the ninth- through 12th-grade class of Doug Green, a Carlsbad High School teacher who runs Carlsbad High School TV, an elective class for students interested in working toward careers in broadcast news production.

Nice work if you can get it.

FBI Says Geezer Bandit Still On The Run

by The Editors on November 2, 2010

Geezer04202010 3 T352When robbery suspect Edward Power, 58, of Carlsbad (click here for 2005 photo) robbed an Oceanside Wells Fargo Bank yesterday (Monday, November 2, 2010) he claimed to be the Geezer bandit. Now, the FBI is reportedly saying he is not man they’re looking for in all the previous bank robberies according to a story in the San Diego Union Tribune.

The FBI said the real Geezer Bandit, named for his elderly appearance, is still wanted. The last robbery attributed to him was June 24 at a bank in Temecula. Authorities say the Geezer has robbed 11 banks since August 2009.

As Carlsbad Lt. Kelly Cain told us last night, “Why someone would claim to be a guy wanted by the FBI during a robbery, I do not know.”

Geezer Bandit Apprehended In Carlsbad?

by The Editors on November 1, 2010

Img 0693

(November 1, 4:45 PM) The Village Apartments in the 3600 block of Roosevelt St. are currently closed by Carlsbad Police as a SWAT operation is conducted.

According to Carlsbad Police, a car matching the description of one used in several armed robberies today (including two banks) was followed to the tiki-themed apartment complex. Two people are currently in custody (one a white male in his late 50s with long gray hair and a woman) and a SWAT team is preparing to sweep the complex.

Village Apartment residents are being told that they could be barred from returning to their homes for up to an hour, maybe two. Carlsbad Police are on the scene as well as an field evidence technician from the Oceanside Police Department. Earlier seven Carlsbad Police Cars, two Oceanside Police Units, one City truck, and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Helicopter were on the scene.

The San Diego Union-Tribune is now reporting that the man arrested identified himself as “the Geezer Bandit”.

The arrest followed a short standoff with the Carlsbad police SWAT team on Village Drive near Roosevelt Street, said Carlsbad police Lt. Bruce May. Another person also was arrested. . . May said the SWAT incident followed the robbery in Oceanside and two robberies in Carlsbad — one at a medical facility and one at a bank. He said witnesses wrote down a license plate number and a vehicle description.

One resident of the Village Apartments confirmed that one suspect (the man with long gray hair) “is one of my neighbors. Yeah, he lives in the complex.”

According to Carlsbad Police Lt. Kelly Cain, the suspect attempted to rob a medical facility on El Camino Real in Carlsbad, but was told they had no cash. Minutes later a “unsuccessful robbery” was attempted at the Carlsbad Bank of America on El Camino Real, and finally the Wells Fargo Bank on Vista Way in Oceanside was robbed.

“The license plate from the Oceanside robbery comes back to this address,” Cain said at the scene. “Officers set up and saw a male adult pull up, exit the vehicle, enter the house. Officers surrounded the house. He came out the back door about 30 minutes later. A woman also exited the house and both were detained for investigation. We believe we have reasonable cause to hold both of them.”

Cain said it did not appear that the woman being held was involved with the robberies themselves.

By 6:15 PM residents were still being kept from their homes while the Carlsbad Police department waited for a search warrant. Cain said depending on how the search goes The Village Apartments residents could be back in their homes within by 7 or 8 PM.

Follow the jump for more photos from this afternoon’s scene.

Vote Yes On Prop 21, Park Free At Tamarack

by Bridget Smith on November 1, 2010

Img 7495As you head to your polling place tomorrow be aware that one particular ballot measure would directly benefit Carlsbadistan residents. Proposition 21 would raise money for California’s state parks and beaches by adding an $18 license registration fee to all vehicles registered in the state of California. In exchange drivers of these vehicles would get free state park day use.

This means that only the tourists would have to pay to park at Tamarack , and residents could go back to their morning surf or beachside stroll without the parking hassle. Hopefully it would also mean cleaner bathrooms, more lifeguards, and better maintained state parks.

Let’s face it, we’re a beach town in a state that relies heavily on tourist revenues to stay fiscally afloat. It is in our best interest to keep our beaches clean, safe, and well maintained. With trying economic times more families are hitting to road to go camping at a state park or spend the day at a local beach. California small businesses that depend on revenue from these visitors would benefit from a more stable funding source for California’s State Parks.

I’m hoping Prop 21 passes, because it’s much easier to schlep three kids, beach chairs, boogie boards, and sand toys from a parking space next to the beach.

Halloween On Elm A Boo-ming Success

by The Editors on October 31, 2010

The Super Mario Family
Luigi, Mario, and Princess Peach looking super at Halloween on Elm.

The streets of the Village of Carlsbadistan were filled yesterday (October 30, 2010) with pirates and bumble bees, spider men and fairy princesses, dead girls and ghosts, as the City of Carlsbad hosted Halloween on Elm. The event sponsored by the Carlsbad Education Foundation, New Village Arts Theatre, Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, and the Carlsbad Village Association.

Kids jumped on bouncy bounces on South State Street, toured the Boys & Girls Club Haunted Mansion on Oak Street, made Halloween crafts at the Coaster Station, put on makeup at New Village Arts Theatre, and hunted the streets for what little candy they could find. So many costumed kids descended on the Village by 3 PM that most of the participating merchants were completely out of candy by 4 PM (the event ran until 9 PM).

Img 0669“I bought three huge bags of candy just like I did last year and gave it all away in the first two hours,” said one State Street shop owner. “We really weren’t expecting this many people.”

That seemed to be the story at many of the Village shops. We ran into several families with disappointed kids. But the dearth of trick or treating opportunities was completely forgotten once the kids got inside the bouncy bounces, started making art, or sat on hay bales watching the Valley Middle School band concert. There was so much going on all over the Village that most kids didn’t even miss not getting any candy. Plus, as someone reminded us: we’ve still got Halloween tomorrow.

Carlsbadistan Bumper Cars Knock Out Power

by The Editors on October 28, 2010

The first link in last night’s bumper car chain reaction in Carlsbadistan was when Alexander Roslund plowed his minivan through a red light at the corner of College Boulevard and Carlsbad Village Drive. He slammed into another minivan injuring a 15-year-old girl according to a story in the North County Times.

The second crash occurred when a driver distracted by watching the first crash drifted into a neighboring lane and sideswiped another vehicle, Chapman said. The distracted driver lost control of her vehicle and slammed into an electrical box, causing a power outage that lasted through the night, according to the sergeant.

All this at 7:50 PM? Wasn’t the World Series still on?
