CUSD Budget Cuts Not So Deep

by The Editors on June 27, 2008

One month ago administrators of the Carlsbad Unified School District thought they would have to trim $5.6 million from the 2008-2009 budget, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune. Now, thanks to being reclassified as a “basic aid” school district (because of high local property values) the district adopted a $96.6 million budget with only $2 million in cuts.

Carlsbad joins several other coastal North County districts – Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas – that are designated as basic aid because property values are so high there. Only about 80 of California’s more than 1,000 public school districts are basic aid districts. . . . That means that over the next fiscal year, Carlsbad Unified is expected to have $3.1 million more to spend than it otherwise would have had as a revenue limit school district.

We don’t exactly understand all the technical details, but smaller-than-expected budget cuts on education are always a great thing.

Free Beer Money For Carlsbad College Students

by The Editors on June 3, 2008

Anheuser Busch BeerCarlsbadistan students who are planning on getting a post-secondary degree in hospitality and tourism management can apply with the Carlsbad Convention and Visitor Bureau for their chance to win one of three cash scholarships worth approximately $1,300.

These scholarships are a long time coming,” commented Kurt Burkhart, the bureau’s Executive Director. “Our desire has always been to do this in partnership, and we feel fortunate to have found a partner with the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and, to the best of our knowledge, we’ll be the first tourism bureau in San Diego County to directly award cash scholarships to students.”

With the cost of college these days, it looks like these scholarships could go a long way toward the average college student’s beer tab, at least for a quarter. Entries are due July 15, 2008. Follow the jump for all the details.

Teachers’ Rally Drives Education

by The Editors on May 16, 2008

Last Wednesday several hundred people turned out to support teachers and education as two local teachers’ unions rallied at Holiday Park in Carlsbadistan. The Carlsbad Lancer Dancers and Excalibur Dancers performed. Students spoke how the arts, music and teachers had made a difference in their lives. Parents, teachers, administrators and school board members spoke on the importance of education for our children’s future.

It’s kind of sad that thanks to our government so many people have to come out and state what should be obvious to every single official. But if they need to hear it again we’re glad there are people to say it.

Thanks to everyone who came out.

by The Editors on April 19, 2008

30F0E283976A87Ee8825742E0068Cb1DWe mentioned this earlier this week and then forgot to go grab some photos. Luckily, the North County Times Jamie Scot Lytle was there to photographically document the protest.

“We cannot allow our governor, our state senators or our assemblymen to destroy California schools,” said John Roach, superintendent of the Carlsbad Unified School District. “Our voices are together on this issue.”

According to the story “hundreds of people” were out on the overpasses. In Carlsbadistan people gathered on Los Flores and Poinsettia overpasses. Carlsbadcrawl.com has photos as well. Check them out.

We Shall Overpass

by The Editors on April 16, 2008

Elisa Williamson, the President of the Board of Trustees of the Carlsbad Unified School district is encouraging and inviting everyone who supports Carlsbad public education to get out Friday, April 18, 2008 at 4:45 PM to send the message “Enough is Enough…No Cuts to Education!”

The idea is to have people with signs and placards (with slogans like “No Cuts to Education” and “Education Cuts Don’t Heal.”) on main freeway and highway overpasses in Carlsbadistan. Hopefully, this won’t lead to any accidents on the freeways. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

For all the details, follow the jump.
