BottleRocket Entertainment Fizzles And Pops

by The Editors on September 4, 2009

BottlerocketJay Beard, founder of the Carlsbadistan-based video gaming developer BottleRocket Entertainment announced that he is shuttering the business, according to a post on GameIndustry.biz.

In an email to friends, sent to GamesIndustry.biz, Beard wrote of his disappointment at the predicament, but noted that he was currently building a new studio “from the ground up”. . . “It is with deep regret that I have to inform you of the closure of BottleRocket,” he wrote. “After fighting to keep the doors open for the past six months we have decided to close and move on. . . “BottleRocket was in business for seven years and I feel that we developed a sound reputation for quality and creativity. I was once told that we ‘zigged while others zagged,’ and I like to think that we shall be remembered this way.

Hopefully, Beard gets the new things rolling soon. Carlsbadistan is loaded with video game talent

Do The Ecke’s Really Need City Handouts?

by The Editors on August 20, 2009

Uti1428548 T350After raising the water rates for Carlsbadistan agriculture by 45 percent last week, the Carlsbadistan City Council is now considering subsidizing the water bill for Paul Ecke the third’s The Flower Fields, according to a Michael Burge story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Mayor Bud Lewis said he was concerned about subsidizing the farms’ water bills, but in 2006 voters passed Proposition D, which said they want to preserve those two operations. . . In 1996 the city also required the Ecke flower-growing family to cultivate the 53-acre Flower Fields “in perpetuity” in exchange for the right to develop the 471-acre Carlsbad Ranch, which includes Legoland California and the Carlsbad Premium Outlet stores.

Now, Chris Calkins, president of the Ecke-owned company CB Ranch, says they are “staring down a barrel of a gun that makes it impossible to grow the crops” inferring that if the City of Carlsbad wants to keep the Flower Fields all colorful they’re going to have to help with the water bill.

Isn’t it nice how businesses will agree to almost anything when they’re trying to get a huge development approved, only to come back later and say they’re not going to be able to hold up their end of the bargain? Classic.

Callaway Patent Ruling Reversed

by The Editors on August 17, 2009

Callaway-LogoCarlsbadistan’s Callaway Golf Company thought they were doing pretty well in their patent dispute with Acushnet (the owners of Titleist). A court ruled that Acushnet had infringed on Callaway’s patent. But now all that’s changed, according to a story on Forbes.

On Friday, the U.S. Court of Appeals reversed a ruling involving a patent dispute favoring Callaway and returned the case to the U.S. District Court in Delaware for further proceedings. Callaway, which is based in Carlsbad, Calif., and Acushnet Co. have been immersed in a patent dispute over Titleist Pro V1 golf balls for several years. The court’s earlier ruling held that Acushnet ‘s product infringed on patents held by Callaway.

But the analysts aren’t worried. Stifel Nicolaus & Co. analyst Thomas D. Shaw said, “It simply means an ultimate payment to Callaway is less likely, if at all, and pushed further out.”

Council Votes To Vote Next Week On Mall

by The Editors on August 12, 2009

The City Council has decided last night to put off voting on a shopping center that may be built at the corner of La Costa Avenue and Rancho Sante Fe Road until next week, according to a story on San Diego 6.

Some say the shopping center would bring in upscale retail shops within walking distance of their homes. . . But opponents say it would bring in more traffic to an already busy area, and the possibility of big box discount stores like Wal-Mart.

There’s nothing funnier than voting to vote later. Then again, the longer it goes without being approved the happier opponents will be.

Barratt American Bites The Dust

by The Editors on August 11, 2009

Uti1407678 T350Carlsbadistan based homebuilder Barratt America filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December 2008, however, that didn’t work out for them. Last week, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune, they dropped down to a full Chapter 7 when creditors say that “reorganization would be futile.”

Richard M. Kipperman, the court-appointed trustee for Barratt, said all that is left of Barratt’s many projects are two single-family homes under construction, one in La Jolla and the other near Lake Hodges. The owners are current on payments to Barratt and will have other contractors complete them.

But not to worry. Barratt President Michael Pattinson says he’s going to start a new company next year “after learning the lessons of building in a boom and bust.”

Per Se Renamed Before It Even Opens

by The Editors on July 28, 2009

Paon-Logo-150Two weeks ago we mentioned that a new California French restaurant was opening in the new oddly Tudor building that snaked behind Beach City Smoothies on the corner of Roosevelt and Carlsbad Village Drive in the Village of Carlsbadistan. In that post the restaurant was called Per Se. But that was then. The wine bar (which is currently open) and the restaurant (which is reportedly opening soon) is now called Paon, according to restaurant’s website.

Whatever they call it, we’re still looking forward to checking it out when it opens early in August.

Poseidon May Start Plant In November

by The Editors on July 21, 2009

Desal-PlantCrews could start ripping up prime lagoon-front land for the Poseidon Resources desalination plant as soon as November, according to a story on KPBS.com.

The company that plans to build a desalination plant in Carlsbad has hired three people to oversee the project’s construction. Poseidon Resources hopes to break ground this fall. . . Poseidon Resources says the three new management employees have decades of expertise in water supply, engineering and project construction. . . Maloni says the company expects to start construction on the $300 million Carlsbad desalination plant in November. . . He says the plant could be operating in 2012.

Seems like we drink enough ocean water as it is. . . but then again, the developer is a thirsty beast and we want to be sure and keep him well hydrated so he can get back to building more houses when this whole economy thing turns around, right?
