A former student of Carlsbad’s Army & Navy Academy has decided that being “brutalized by other students seven years ago in a hazing incident that included sodomy with a broom handle . . slathered in Icy Hot analgesic heat rub” isn’t something he wants to let go unchecked. He has sued the school, according to a story in the North County Times.
That lawsuit is one of two pending against the academy claiming that administrators at the campus failed to adequately oversee cadets and prevent inappropriate behavior. . . .The second suit was filed by the parents of a then-16-year-old cadet who say their son had sexual relations with an 18-year-old student during times that he was supposed to be supervised by an adult.
It is worth noting that according to Academy President Stephen Bliss (pictured right) “The academy’s written policies for cadets forbid all forms of sexual abuse and hazing.”

After two nights of previews the New Villages Arts Theatre is officially opening their production of The Heidi Chronicles on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 8 PM.
The Wendy Wasserstein play features NVA Ensemble Member Kristianne Kurner with John DeCarlo, Kelly Iversen, Brian Mackey, Anthony Phifer, Frances Regal, Sunny Smith and Jacque Wilke, with musical accompaniment by Linda Libby.
Wendy Wasserstein’s groundbreaking play about identity, family, feminism and art follows Heidi Holland from insecure student at a high school dance in the 1960’s to successful art historian promoting female artists in the late 1980’s. Through Heidi’s travels, we are able to peek in on the changing roles of women in our society in the last half of the twentieth century and explore what defines success and how we go about searching for meaning in our lives.

Wondering what you’re going to do to keep the busy all day on Easter weekend? The Carlsbad Parks & Rec department has that all figured out with the EGGStravaganza Spring Festival on Saturday, April 3, 10 AM to 1 PM at 6600 Hidden Valley Rd, Carlsbad.
Come celebrate the spring with music, fun games, arts and crafts and a Fun Zone with bounce houses, a giant slide, obstacle courses and a chance to “soak the bunny.” Collect eggs in the ongoing “Egg Scramble” activity between 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Children race to collect assorted eggs on the baseball fields, grouped by age. This activity sends groups of approximately 20 children into the out field to collect as many eggs as they can.
With a start time of 10 AM that means you have an hour to roll by the Apple Store and pick up your iPad before rolling over the park. Perfect timing. Click the link for more details.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad raised nearly $85,000 at its annual fundraising golf tournament held March 22, 2010 at the El Camino Country Club in Oceanside.
“The success of this tournament is a result of astounding contributions from so many individuals and companies throughout San Diego County,” said Randy Ferren of California Bank & Trust, Steering Committee Chair. “While the day presented so many winners, we are pleased that it’s the boys and girls that attend our Club that are the ultimate winners – and benefit from this generosity.”

Dancers from the Carlsbad Dance Center placed first overall in the teen and senior divisions at the Spotlight Dance Cup in Long Beach, California last weekend.
The competition judges paid special tribute to star Carlsbad Choreographer and Teacher, Abbie Ginsberg, by recognizing her with a special Judges Award during the ceremony. All of the dances Abbie Choreographed earned Diamond Awards at the competition. Judge Stacy Paydo said, I have been watching her choreography for years and have been amazed and awed!”
Apparently Carlsbadistan has all the dance moves. Congrats!

If you walk the seawall late at night along Carlsbad Boulevard, you may hear voices in the distance sounding the alarm: “To arms! To arms! The unions are coming! The unions are coming!”
The familiar warning cry began with a Feb. 20 headline in the North County Times: “City’s unions expected to play active role in mayoral election.”
From the day City Councilman Keith Blackburn declared his candidacy for mayor, tongues have been wagging about how police and firefighters unions have announced their intent to do whatever they can to put the former police officer in the seat that Bud Lewis occupied for a quarter of a century.
Unlike in Oceanside, labor unions have not played a major role in Carlsbad City Council politics. With more union involvement, will North County’s model municipality of political civility be in danger of being sucked into the all-consuming black hole of partisanship that plagues its northern neighbor?

Carlsbadistan Boy Scout Troop 748 will serve a pancake breakfast to the community on Easter morning (April 4, 2010) at the Carlsbad Senior Center at 799 Pine Street from 7:30 AM until Noon as part of their 52nd Annual Pancake Breakfast.
The delicious all-you-can-eat breakfast consists of pancakes, eggs, fresh fruit and coffee. Breakfast patrons can look forward to sitting indoors at beautifully decorated tables and having fully-uniformed Scouts “wait” on them. The nearly 40 Boy Scouts now in Troop 748 will use the proceeds for activities to advance rank towards the ultimate goal of Eagle Scout.
