Carlsbadistan Boy Scout Troop 748 will serve a pancake breakfast to the community on Easter morning (April 4, 2010) at the Carlsbad Senior Center at 799 Pine Street from 7:30 AM until Noon as part of their 52nd Annual Pancake Breakfast.
The delicious all-you-can-eat breakfast consists of pancakes, eggs, fresh fruit and coffee. Breakfast patrons can look forward to sitting indoors at beautifully decorated tables and having fully-uniformed Scouts “wait” on them. The nearly 40 Boy Scouts now in Troop 748 will use the proceeds for activities to advance rank towards the ultimate goal of Eagle Scout.

Last night, March 23, 2010, at Valley Middle School’s science night, Carlsbadistan based ViaSat announced a $15,000 donation to super charge the science programs in Carlsbad Middle school. Principal César Morales along with science teachers, a member of the Carlsbad Education Foundation, and accepted the check from a representative from ViaSat.
On a side note: ViaSat announced on Monday, March 22, 2010, that they were going public, offering 5,500,000 shares of its common stock, consisting of 2,500,000 shares offered by ViaSat and 3,000,000 shares offered by certain selling stockholders.
Is it wrong of us to watch this video thinking about all the ways we might sneak in and skate all this stuff before they put the water in for the June 2010 opening of the Legoland California Waterpark?
Last night (March 20, 2010) the Carlsbad Lion’s Club held their 56th Annual Miss Carlsbad Scholarship Pageant at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center. And according to the North County Times, the new Miss Carlsbad is Alaina Crabtree (pictured left) and the new Miss Teen Carlsbad is Skyler Blankenship (pictured right).
First runner-up in the Miss Carlsbad Pageant was Courtney Jones, second runner-up was Kathryne Lowman, and third runner-up was KellyAnn Boyce. Allie Phinney took the titles of Miss Photogenic and Miss Congeniality. . . First runner-up in the Miss Teen pageant was Natasha Maldi, second runner-up was Tina Li, and third runner-up was Caitlin Clark. Miss photogenic was Kelly Simek and Miss Congeniality was Mercedes Harvey.
Apparently, the queens and their courts will “spend the year of their reign volunteering at many civic and charitable events.” We knew there was some kind of point to all this. . .
When we met Jess Gibson last summer and had no idea he was working on an Adult Fans Of Lego “blocumentary.” Now, thanks to Gizmodo, we know. Check it out. It’s 30 minutes long and is required viewing for anyone who lives with in five miles of Legoland California.
It will help us all understand a little more what’s going on back behind the Flower Fields.
The Coast News gets the straight scoop on the McTwist and Shaun White’s Double McTwist 1260 from the trick’s originator Mike McGill (seen above at the Encinitas YMCA).
“It definitely feels good when somebody like Shaun White gives you props for your trick,” said McGill, who landed the first McTwist at a Swedish summer camp in 1984. “I made the trick and I still couldn’t believe how he was going to do two (spins) because you are going blind twice.”

John Steinbeck is regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language and we as Californians can be very proud that he is ours. The Carlsbad Library is celebrating Steinbeck in the month of April as the community reads Steinbeck’s classic road book Travels With Charlie: In Search of America.
In 1960, author John Steinbeck took a cross-country road trip with his poodle, Charley, to reacquaint himself with the America he’d written about all his life. The result was “Travels With Charley: In Search of America,” an intimate look at one of America’s greatest authors. . . . Other events scheduled for April include a Steinbeck film series; a program on the travels of early Carlsbad residents, presented by the Library’s Carlsbad History Room; a travel writing workshop; and Carlsbad Playreaders presenting “The Grapes of Wrath.”

A woman in her 20s was taken to the hospital by helicopter for injuries she sustained after falling down a beachside cliff near Turn Arounds at about 6 PM tonight (March 15, 2010), according to a Jose Luis Jiménez story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
. . . she either fell or the cliff gave way, said Carlsbad fire Battalion Chief Mike Davis. She fell about 20 feet onto Carlsbad State Beach and told paramedics she could not move, Davis said. . . Paramedics cared for the woman until a helicopter from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department lifted her from the beach.
Those paths can be tricky. Our thoughts are with her.
Sometimes the end of the day in Carlsbadistan is so beautiful that we forget about everything else and wish the moment could last for hours. But it doesn’t. Even on the Ides of March as soon as it’s done, it’s over. Luckily for all of us, there will be another one tomorrow.
