This may be terrible to say, but we don’t expect all that much from the TV media in Greenville, Mississippi. Not even from WABG “Delta’s #1 News Station.” That’s why it didn’t come as that big a surprise to find that the ABC network affiliate had “borrowed” one of our photos and used it in the header of their corporate website.
The photo ran in a story we posted on September 18, 2007 about KNSD reporter Rory Devine covering Carlsbadistan’s new entertainment regulations.
Not only did WABG borrow the photo from us (and cropped out the Carlsbadistan logo), but they cut Rory Devine right out of the photo out as well and then Photoshopped their logo on the front of a KNSD’s live truck.
We don’t know which is more embarrassing, the fact that they hijacked a photo, or that WABG doesn’t have its own live broadcasting truck. But then why would they. They’re the “Delta’s #1 News Station.”
Special thanks to a group of “Internet friends” who somehow figured this all out.

Today, Carlsbad’s Wu Man, 43, was announced a winner of the annual United States Aritist Fellowship.
Wu Man is an internationally renowned pipa virtuoso. The pipa is a lutelike Chinese instrument that has a two-thousand-year history. Wu studied a classical style of pipa at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, receiving the first master’s degree in that instrument. She immigrated to the United States in 1990, at the age of 25. Wu performs traditional pipa music and also interprets specially commissioned works by composers such as Terry Riley, Philip Glass, and Tan Dun. She has performed as a soloist with many orchestras and is a principal member of Yo- Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project. Wu was the first Chinese musician to perform at the White House. A.C.
United States Artists (USA) is a grant-making organization dedicated to supporting America’s finest living artists working in in a diverse array of disciplines. And to think, Wu lives in Carslbadistan. We are proud to see our Village associated with such talent. Even if we don’t exactly know what a pipa sounds like.

The show features a line up of side-splitting comedians—some who were former executives and who have made a career out of comedy —- as well as Malibu Mike, who plays “Dick Tator” the idiot boss in the lobby who will fire theater-goers as they enter the venue. Headlining the show is Vickie Barbolak, a San Diego comedian voted on network TV as America’s Funniest Mom.
This one-time show is Saturday, November 22, 2008 at the Carlsbad Village Theatre 2822 State Street. Tickets are available online for $18 or by calling (800) 754-9737.

Carlsbadistan’s City Council Candidate Evan Rodgers has said repeatedly that she is not interested in spending any money on her campaign or on printing up posters that would litter people’s yards for a few weeks and then spend eternity in a landfill.
Evan’s growing support base however has been asking for some way to show support for Evan and help spread her message for a new, greener, cleaner Carlsbad. Until recently there was nothing they could do aside from making posters themselves.
That was until Bryan Snyder at Snyder Art (and Carlsbadcrawl.com) got involved and created posters, t-shirts and stickers that will allow everyone to show their support. Here is what he says:
We have developed pieces of art to be placed on properties, or on walls, of those whom support local art and Evan’s interest in it. . . . Carlsbadrawl considers these signs to be art rather than one-time-use marketing material. Each sign is handmade, numbered and signed by both Bryan Snyder and Evan. Unlike the signs of other candidates, these will not find their ways into landfills. We hope local supporters will accept them as art and keep them well after November 4th as visually appealing creations, as well as a historical reminder of Evan’s attempt at being the youngest elected official in California.
The t-shirts are a graphic tribute to street artist Shepard Fairey’s Hope graphics, but they look great. Rodgers supporters are invited to stop by Snyder Art and pick up art-signs, stickers, tote bags, or t-shirts any time of the day or night.
For more info visit Carlsbadcrawl.com or Snyder Art at 2695 State Street in downtown Carlsbadistan.

We learned last year that if we wanted to see any of the Carlsbad Art Splash transitory chalk art in it’s completed form we’d have to visit on Sunday afternoon. This year we did, however, artists like Jennifer (pictured above) and many others were still hard at work on their pieces knowing full well that they art they were creating would be gone by sunrise.
“We have to get all this cleaned up by midnight tonight, because they’re driving on this in the morning,” said Mary Beth McFaul (pictured left) while she worked on the Rotary Club art piece.
Obviously, the dozens of artists working on the street enjoy the process over the permanence and that’s part of what makes Art Splash so much fun for the thousands of visitors who strolled up and down Armada Drive this weekend.
It wasn’t all spectating. In the Family Art Carnival (below) families were given a square and tools to make their own chalk paintings, make hats out of newspaper, or learn the ancient art of origami.

Carlsbadistan’s Armada Drive is in for a serious chalking on September 20-21, 2008 as artists lay down some amazing transitory art on the pavement during the two-day Art Splash festival. This event is to benefit arts in the local community and is a great way to spend the day with the family.
But art isn’t all. Food is on the menu, too as Taste at ArtSplash features a sampling from 16 area restaurants all for $20 per person. Last year’s popular Karl Strauss Beer Garden will be back along with the all-new Bellefleur Wine Gardenso everyone will have the chance to drink a smile on their faces.

We’ve begun to notice new public art showing up around town as part of The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce’s project Art In The Heart of the Village, but we’ve never seen it in progress. That’s why it was good to see artist Marla Epstein out on the sidewalk today brush in hand surrounded by her paints.
Epstein has been commissioned to paint a portrait of little Dulce on the hydrant directly in front of the Overseas Chinese Restaurant at 2820 Roosevelt St, next to the Post Office. “Dulce with a u. It means sweet,” she said. “So that’s why there are going to be a bunch of candy canes on this one.”
Whether because of her work, or her friendly smile Marla was stopping traffic. We asked how she was going to finish with all the people stopping by to talk to her about what she was doing and she laughed and said, “Oh, I’ll get it done.”

The streets of the Carlsbadistan Village will be filled with “art” on Sunday, August 10, 2008 as the Carlsbad Village Business Association hosts the 10th Annual Art in the Village, Artists and Artisans in Carlsbad.
Art in the Village features 150 fine artists in mediums such as oil painting, watercolors, photography, mixed media, new media, classical and contemporary sculpture, as well as artisans who work in the mediums of jewelry making, woodworking, furniture, hand-painted clothing and accessories. . . . The one day art faire is a long standing tradition in the Village of Carlsbad, and is held on the second Sunday of August every year. “Art in the Village is a great way to spend the day in the Village.” says Robin Young, Executive Director of the CVBA, “its fun for the whole family with art, food, music and fun activity. And it gives tourists and local residents a real feel for what the Village has to offer.”
While our definition of “art” may differ from most of the “artisans” exhibiting their work this weekend, there are occasionally bits of magic to be found. Click here for photos from last year’s event.
