Currently a junior at Carlsbad High School, Gerald became a member at the Village Branch six years ago. He immediately became involved in all the activities that were offered. He lives the adage “good citizenship is doing good when nobody is looking,” and he’s very involved with Keystone Club, a service/leadership program. With over 350 community service hours in the last year, Gerald is all about helping others. “I hope to become a psychiatrist and help people with mental disabilities,” says Gerald. “The Boys & Girls Club is an important part of my life, and will always be that way. It’s a place for fun, adventures, happiness, security, and like a second family.”
Bell and the three other finalists, Keli Moriarty-Alkire, Marina Rodriguez, and Mara Waynick, were honored at a “super star dinner” held February 1, 2012 at the Carlsbad Village branch. Bell was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. For more of the official details, follow the jump. [click to continue…]
The event features a “Battle of the Bands” judged by local music industry experts, a film festival with 5-minute movie shorts, a dance room with a D.J. featuring the Dance Unlimited dancers,” Gametruck, as well as an art café and game room. . . “All the music, films and art showcased at Teen Scene are created by local teens between the ages of 13 and 19. The event fosters teen expression in a safe and fun environment,” said Rachael Shay, special events supervisor for the city. “Past winners of the ‘Battle of the Bands’ have gone on to open for major rock acts, play legendary venues and get airplay on local commercial radio stations, so it’s a pretty big deal, and a thrill to see the bands’ hard work pay off.”

Until last summer the residents of Rancho Carlsbad Estates had a winning record when it came to their ping pong tournaments against the Carlsbad Boys & Girls Club players. Then this summer, the Club players finally won the tournament. Now, Rancho Carlsbad has been good enough to donate a brand new ping pong table to the new Bressi Boys & Girls club.
The interaction between seniors and youngsters is a perfect match,” said Jim Salvia, Bressi Unit Director. “Many of our kids don’t have grandparents readily available to them. The intergenerational activities are beneficial to both groups; everyone has a blast!”
Ping pong isn’t the only thing the two groups have worked on together of the past five years. Follow the jump for the complete school. [click to continue…]
Turns out we’re not the only one’s who think Legoland prices are outrageously expensive. The Malaysian Tourists Guides Council says the entrance fees to Asia’s first ever Legoland Malaysia theme park in Johor Baru are, surprise, “Too high for locals,” according to a story on The Star.
He said Legoland Malaysia should have a two-tier ticket system to cater to both locals and foreigners. . . “Other places of interest, like the cable car ride in Langkawi or the Istana Muzium here, have implemented such a system,” he told The Star yesterday.
Yeah. What he said. It appears that when the park opens “at the end of 2012” Legoland Malaysia’s prices will be almost worth considering for a Carlsbadistan family of four. At current exchange rates adults will pay about $44 a day visit the park, while here in Carlsbad it costs $72.
Carlsbadistan’s most famous action sports star Tony Hawk will flip the switch (not a skateboard trick) tonight (Monday, November 28, 2011) at Legoland to help kick off the outrageously expensive theme park’s annual Holiday Celebration.
Hawk, father of four and life-long Ambassador Pass Member to LEGOLAND, launched the Tony Hawk Foundation in 2002 with the goal to increase the number of safe, legal skate parks for youth in low-income communities across the U.S. To date, the Tony Hawk Foundation has helped fund 493 public skateboard parks in these communities, which now service 3.5-million youth annually.
We’d love to be there tonight, however, we’re saving our $300 for a trip to Disneyland. Follow the jump for more details. [click to continue…]
The event was emceed by Emmy Award winning news anchor Kimberly Hunt and her husband (and former Charger) Billy Ray Smith, and honored SDSU Men’s Basketball Coach Steve Fisher. . . “What a memorable evening; you could literally feel the love in the ballroom!” said Chair Barbi Nelson. “The true super stars are our children, and I’m pleased that we were able to raise significant funds for them.”
Proceeds from the event went directly toward operating funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs. For more info follow the jump. [click to continue…]
As much as we’d like to think that the taxes we pay to the State of California could support a reasonable public school system, here in Carlsbad that just isn’t the case. In fact, the Carlsbad Unified School District is headed into an $11 million deficit for the 2012-13 school year. That’s why the work of the Carlsbad Education Foundation is so important to the students in Carlsbad. On November 1, 2011 the CEF kicked off their annual fund drive.
Here’s what they did with the money this year:
Carlsbad Educational Foundation announces the release of $350,000 in funds to assist 15 key initiatives that support students within the Carlsbad Unified School District during the 2011-2012 school year. Among the initiatives are essential music, science and special programs that impact 11,000 students throughout the district.

The week of August 1, 2011 Carlsbad’s national dance competition award winning Lancer Dancers will be sharing some of their deep dance skills with young dancers grades K-7 during Jr. Lancer Dancer Summer Camp.
Team Co-Captain, Camille Posard shares her theory on success, “Last year we were the Cinderella Story winning the National Championship with 8 rookies on the team and 5 freshmen, but it was hard work and determination not experience that made it possible. We will be sharing what we learned with the dancers at camp this summer”. . . . The Lancer Dancers are excited to be able to share their dance skills, choreography, and teamwork with other young dancers during this week of camp. Their goal for the camp is to inspire others with their love of dance, but more importantly, how teamwork, dedication, and hard work can take you just about anywhere that you set your sights on! Lancer Dancer, Katie Park, describes how camp is about more than dance, “Young dancers will not only learn dances, but leadership qualities and discipline that help you succeed in other aspects of life.”
All the five-day camp requires the will to dance and a $100 donation to the Lancer Dancers. For more information click here and/or follow the jump. [click to continue…]
