Mr. Cottingham has served as the chairperson of his company’s annual Global Volunteer Day, in which Life Technologies allows all of its employees worldwide to participate in volunteer activities arranged at the local level. TGIF Aug 7: The Screamin’ Primas

by The Editors on August 3, 2009

Screaminprimas.JpgOkay, so The Screamin’ Primas may not be the musical apex of the 2009 TGIF Jazz In The Park season, but they are kicking off the Calavera Hills Park leg of this Carlsbadistan concert series with a “tribute” to the late, great “Rat Pack” era Las Vegas lounge singer Louis Prima. He was the guy responsible for “Jump, Jive and Wail, Just a Gigolo, and That Old Black Magic. But don’t let that scare you because:

This eight-piece tribute band is no pale imitation, capturing the energy, emotion and excitement of Prima’s late 1950s Las Vegas Night Club show via live re-creations performed in the original Louis Prima style.

By the way, if you need an exciting original live act for your next party or corporate event? The Screamin’ Primas are your answer. At least that’s what it says on their website.

Magic On The Coast

by The Editors on July 31, 2009

073009 11

The highlight of our evening on the streets of Carlsbadistan for the somewhat subdued launch of Thursdays On The Coast was a performance by Tonette The Magician in front of the Carlsbad Theater. Her best trick was making everyone walk away with a smile.

There is more music and art planned for tonight, so look for it if you’re in Carlsbadistan for the evening.

Life Technology’s Q2 Better Than Expected

by The Editors on July 29, 2009

LifetechOur favorite Carlsbadistan-based life sciences company Life Technologies Corp. (we’re shareholders) reported second quarter numbers yesterday and while profits were down versus last year, the company beat analyst’s estimates, according to a story on TradingMarkets.com.

The . . . company reported GAAP net income for the second quarter of $38.9 million or $0.22 per share, compared to $46.9 million or $0.48 per share for the year-ago quarter. . . The company, which makes tools used to identify the H1N1 strain of influenza, also lifted its financial guidance for the rest of the year in an earnings report released after the market closed Tuesday.

And thanks to that the stock was up $3.14 a share this morning, or nearly 8 percent. Thanks, Swine Flu.

Per Se Renamed Before It Even Opens

by The Editors on July 28, 2009

Paon-Logo-150Two weeks ago we mentioned that a new California French restaurant was opening in the new oddly Tudor building that snaked behind Beach City Smoothies on the corner of Roosevelt and Carlsbad Village Drive in the Village of Carlsbadistan. In that post the restaurant was called Per Se. But that was then. The wine bar (which is currently open) and the restaurant (which is reportedly opening soon) is now called Paon, according to restaurant’s website.

Whatever they call it, we’re still looking forward to checking it out when it opens early in August.

Armed And Not So Dangerous

by The Editors on July 28, 2009

Opencarry 2Members of the pro-gun North County Open Carry Group apparently paraded around Carlsbadistan Village on Saturday July 25, 2009 armed with unloaded guns to show that it is still legal to carry an unloaded gun in public, according to a post on Examiner.com.

The group of North County Patriots walked the Village Faire area of Carlsbad handing out informational flyers. “We made lots of new friends and no one called the police or freaked out,” says Jeff Schwilk who helped organize this “open carry” and also heads the San Diego Minutemen group which lobbies for secure borders and Constitutional rights.

Of course he does. Gun nuts are so nutty.
