Carlsbadistan’s St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church is hosting the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus’s presentation of The Alice Parker Festival tonight (September 18, 3008), and they’re calling it a “once in a lifetime choral event.” Seeing as we haven’t had many “choral events” in our lifetime, that statement is most likely true.
“Alice has been one of the most beloved and revered figures in choral music for half a century,” continues Chase. “We are very pleased to present this Festival, which I recommend to anybody, at any level, who loves vocal music. I guarantee it will be a musical experience like none other, and choir singers and audience alike will feel musically gratified.”
So, if you appreciate group singing of a spiritual bent, this might be a perfect evening. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for “youngsters 18 and under.”

BHY S&B Holdings LLC, the new owners of the bankrupt Steve & Barry’s chain of cheap sports clothing stores, has decided to close 103 of their 276 stores including the store in Carlsbad’s Plaza Camino Real (not that anyone will notice another empty retail space).
BHY S&B Holdings LLC, a newly formed investment consortium affiliated with Bay Harbour Management and York Capital Management, purchased the assets of Steve & Barry’s for $163 million. . . following the retailer’s filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection July 9.
Wish we could say we’ll miss that store, but truth is aside from an occasional trip to AT&T we never visit Plaza Camino Real because we’re scared.

Residents of Carlsbadistan’s exclusive Bressi Ranch are getting a brand new 44,000 square foot Stater Bros Market. And groundbreaking ceremonies went on today at 9:30 AM (sadly, we missed this photo op).
The NEW Stater Bros. Supermarket will be located at Bressi Village Shopping Center at the intersection of Gateway Road and El Fuerte St. in southeast Carlsbad. A Grand Opening Celebration for the new Bressi Ranch Stater Bros. Supermarket is scheduled for February 2009.
We won’t want to miss that celebration. If the market keeps going the way it’s headed today we’re all going to need some free food come February.

Forbes.com is calling Carlsbadistan one of the country’s largest foreclosure hotspots right in above La Jolla, and Miami Beach.
In Carlsbad, for example, there are 302 homes in foreclosure. The wealthy beach town–the median home sale price is $710,000–has suffered from overvaluation and risky financing, says Rick Sharga, a senior vice president at RealtyTrac. . . . The only thing that separates homeowners in Carlsbad from those in [other hot spots] is that in Carlsbad folks are losing their second homes.
Oh, we get it. Forbes is saying that it’s no big deal because in Carlsbad we can all afford to lose our “second homes.” Nice.

In a 4-to-1 vote the City Council upheld a planning commission decision sending Carlsbad Boat Club owners Jim Courtney and Michael Pfankuch back to the drawing board on their plans to develop a 25-unit time-share unit on a 1-acre lot on the north shore of Agua Hedionda Lagoon, according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times.
Council members, including Hall, said Tuesday that it was time for the two men to “go back and listen to the neighbors” and revise their plans.
Wonder how differently that vote would have gone if Courtney or Pfankuch were on the City Council?

The economy may be down, but it looks like more people are Jazzercising than ever as Carlsbad’s Jazzercise has had it’s best year in the company’s 39 years of operation.
System wide sales topped 93 million for the past fiscal year, marking a 9% increase over last year’s totals. The increase marked the seventh consecutive year Jazzercise has posted system wide sales growth, including company divisions of Jazzertogs fitness apparel and award-winning JM Digitalworks. Jazzercise has more than 7,500 instructors teaching 32,000 classes weekly in all 50 states and 32 countries worldwide.
It’s amazing how much money can be made by charging women to jump around to music. Crazy.

Looks like those who spoke out at recent area code hearings were heard as California Public Utilities Commission Judge Maribeth Bushey has ruled to allow current 760 area code holders to keep their area code while new numbers will have the 442 area code, according to a story on 10news.com.
The full five-member commission is scheduled to vote on Bushey’s ruling on Oct. 16. . . . Bushey presided over public hearings on the proposed change earlier this month in Carlsbad and Victorville.
New numbers get the new area code. Hard to believe that something so logical would require so much legal action.

Today, the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa is celebrating Global Out-of-Office Day to promote their new Link@Sheraton experienced with Microsoft. Eight Carlsbad businesses will reportedly spend the day “working” out on the Palm Court Lawn outside the hotel and overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Our guess at the businesses involved? Real Estate. . . since sitting out on the lawn is about all they can do these days.
Designed as a social destination, the Link@Sheraton invites guests to interact with each other while they check their email, research local attractions and even print boarding passes using free Wi-Fi and Internet-enabled computer stations.
We’re guessing this is just a new Sheraton business center, but the thought of business people working “out on the lawn” has peaked our interest. We think we’ll roll over later and see how many “executives” have survived.

It’s all Star Wars at Legoland on Saturday September 13 -14, 2008 as the 501st Legion of Rebel Forces storms Legoland. While normally we wouldn’t recommend encouraging your children to hang out with grown men dressed like Storm Troopers and Wookies, we’re pretty sure this will be a fun day at the park for all Star Wars fans.
Legoland guests need not travel to a galaxy far, far away to take part in out-of-this-world fun activities like the Droid Hunt, video game battles, trivia competitions and Clone Trooper scavenger hunts. Whether they favor the Dark Side or support Luke Skywalker’s cause, guests are encouraged to dress as their favorite Star Wars characters and participate in daily costume contests for a chance to win prizes valued at more than $500!
These are definitely the droids you are looking for. Follow the jump for all the details.
